West Indies Women claimed their first win in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 after comfortably beating Scotland Women by six wickets in the Group B match at Dubai. 

After Scotland Women chose to bat first, they scored 99/8 in 20 overs. West Indies Women chased the target in 11.4 overs after losing four wickets.

Openers fell early

The Scottish batters fought hard in the first half of the first innings. At the end of the powerplay, they scored 25/2. Although both the openers, Saskia Horley (11) and Sarah Bryce (2), were dismissed cheaply, Captain Kathryn Bryce and Ailsa Lister had a good partnership.

For the crucial third wicket, Bryce and Lister added 46 runs. Although they were not fast scorers, their slow partnership created a tense situation for the Caribbean players. Also, it should be noted that West Indies dropped Lister three times before Afy Fletcher dismissed her in the 13th over for 26 runs off 33 balls.

In the 13th over, Fletcher took wickets in two consecutive deliveries by dismissing Lister and Priyanaz Chatterji (0). In her next over, Fletcher dismissed captain Bryce for 25 off 31 balls. 

There were no other 20+ scores for the Scottish side. They were restricted to a two-digit total. While most of the Caribbean bowlers were disciplined, Fletcher took three wickets for 22 runs in her four overs.

In reply, West Indies lost three out of their first four batters in single-digit scores. Captain Hayley Matthews (8), her opening partner Stafanie Taylor (4), and Shemaine Campbelle (2) couldn’t add much.

Qiana Joseph's style helped the West Indies to chase comfortably 

However, No. 4 Qiana Joseph’s counter-attacking style helped the Caribbean team not come under pressure in any situation. While Joseph scored 31 off 18 balls, Deandra Dottin (28*) and Chinelle Henry (18*) comfortably finished the game. 

Among the Scottish bowlers, only Olivia Bell managed to claim more than one wicket (3-0-18-2).
