West Indies Women stunned after claiming a destructive victory against England Women by six wickets to advance to the semifinals as the Group B points table leader at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
After West Indies Women chose to field first at Dubai, England Women scored 141/7 in 20 overs. In reply, West Indies Women chased the target in 18 overs after losing four wickets.
After the end of the match, West Indies Women, South Africa Women, and England Women finished Group B with six points each. However, West Indies Women qualified for the semifinals as the Group B champions along with the runners-up of the points table, South Africa Women. England Women, who suffered their first defeat in this tournament on Tuesday (October 15), are shockingly out of the tournament due to having a lower net run rate.
England Women openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge set up a 29-run partnership for the first wicket before West Indies Women took two wickets by dismissing Wyatt-Hodge (16) and Alice Capsey (1). England Women scored 34/2 at the end of the powerplay.
On the first ball of the post-powerplay, Bouchier was dismissed for 14 runs.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and captain Heather Knight had a 46-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Knight retired hurt after feeling discomfort in running. Knight scored 21 off 13 balls.
After that fourth-wicket partnership, Sciver-Brunt didn’t have any supporting partners. Although Sciver-Brunt scored 57 not out off 50 balls with the help of five fours, none of the later batters managed to reach the double-digit scores.
Among the Caribbean bowlers, Afy Fletcher (3/21) took three wickets and Hayley Mathews (2/35) bagged two wickets.
Captain Hayley Mathews and Qiana Joseph provided a dream start for the Caribbean team in the chase. After scoring 67/0 at the end of the powerplay, they continued their batting dominance.
Mathews and Joseph set up a 102-run partnership for the first wicket. Joseph completed her fifty in 34 balls and scored 52 off 38 balls with six fours and two sixes before losing her wicket. Before her dismissal, Joseph was dropped thrice.
Also, captain Mathews was dismissed after scoring 50 runs in 38 balls with the help of seven fours and one six.
Although West Indies lost both their set openers in a quick period, there was not much tension moment in the Caribbean squad. Deandra Dottin then scored 27 off 19 balls with two fours and two sixes before her dismissal, as the Caribbean team finished the game comfortably.
