India Women recorded their largest Women’s T20 World Cup win after claiming a dominating 82-run victory against Sri Lanka Women at Dubai in the Group A match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.  

India Women captain Harmanpreet Kaur chose to field first after winning the toss. While India Women scored 172/3 in 20 overs, Sri Lanka Women were bundled out for only 90 runs. 

Indian openers provided a solid start

India Women openers Smirit Mandhana and Shafali Verma set up a great start with 41/0 at the end of the powerplay. They recorded India’s third-highest opening partnership in the Women’s T20 World Cup history with 98 runs opening partnership before losing wickets on back-to-back deliveries.

Mandhana was run out on 50 off 38 balls, while Chamari Athapaththu dismissed Verma for 43 off 40 balls. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur then handled the innings powerfully. 

Captain scored a speedy fifty

Kaur scored a 27-ball fifty as she was not out on 52 not out off 27 balls with the help of eight fours and one six.

New ball bowlers produced top start

In reply, Sri Lanka Women lost their first three wickets in just six runs. Renuka Singh took two wickets and Shreyanka Patil got a wicket in the powerplay. 

Sobhana and Reddy picked up three wickets each

Kavisha Dilhari and Anushka Sanjeewani then somehow handled the remaining powerplay as Sri Lanka Women scored 28/3. They had a 37-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Asha Sobhana dismissed Sanjeewani (20). Kavisha Dilhari (21) and Ama Kanchana (19) were the only other Sri Lankan batters to score double-digit runs in that innings. 

Asha Sobhana (3/19) and Arundhati Reddy (3/19) took three wickets each, while Renuka Singh (2/16) got two wickets. 

As India won the match by 82 runs, it created a new record for India Women's largest victory (by runs) in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup history. Their previous record was winning by 79 runs against Bangladesh Women during the 2014 edition.
