England Women pulled off a thrilling seven-wicket win over South Africa Women in a Group B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Chasing a target of 125, England sealed victory in the final over, thanks to a composed performance from Nat Sciver-Brunt. South Africa had earlier posted a competitive 124/6 in their 20 overs.

Sciver-Brunt steers England to victory

England’s chase got off to a slow start, with opener Maia Bouchier struggling to find momentum before being dismissed for 8. But Nat Sciver-Brunt anchored the innings with a well-crafted 48* off 36 balls. In partnership with Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Sciver-Brunt added a vital 64 runs for the third wicket, guiding her team to the brink of victory. With four runs needed off the final over, Sciver-Brunt kept her composure and hit the winning boundary to secure England’s seven-wicket win.

Wyatt-Hodge and Ecclestone shine for England

Danni Wyatt-Hodge was another key contributor to England's chase, scoring 43 runs off 43 balls in a steady, run-a-ball knock that laid the foundation for the win. On the bowling side, Sophie Ecclestone was the standout performer, delivering an impressive spell of 4-0-15-2, including the crucial wicket of South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt. Ecclestone’s efforts helped restrict South Africa to a modest total, giving England the edge in the match.

Wolvaardt and Kapp lead South Africa’s effort

South Africa started solidly with an opening partnership of 31, and skipper Laura Wolvaardt played a captain's knock with 42 off 39 balls. However, a lack of boundaries from the seventh to the 13th overs hampered their progress. Marizanne Kapp added valuable runs with a quickfire 26 off 17 balls, while Annerie Dercksen’s 20* off 11 provided a late flourish, helping South Africa post a challenging total of 124/6.
