Bangladesh opened their Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a record-breaking 16-run win over Scotland on Thursday. A strong all-round performance helped Bangladesh defend a modest total of 119/7, securing a memorable start to the tournament.

Sobhana Mostary anchors Bangladesh's innings

Bangladesh's innings was built around Sobhana Mostary’s composed knock of 36 off 38 balls, which anchored the team’s total. She found good support from opener Shathi Rani, who contributed a solid 29 runs, and skipper Nigar Sultana with a steady 18 off 18 balls. Quick hitting from Fahima Khatun (10* off 5) in the final overs helped push the total to 119/7.

Saskia Horley was the standout bowler for Scotland, taking 3 wickets for 13 runs in her two overs, while Kathryn Bryce, Olivia Bell, and Katherine Fraser each took a wicket, ensuring Bangladesh didn’t run away with the score.

Ritu Moni’s impressive spell seals the Win

With the ball, Ritu Moni led Bangladesh’s charge, taking 2/15 in her four overs, applying pressure on Scotland’s batters early in their chase. The bowling unit worked together effectively, with Marufa Akter (1/17), Nahida Akter (1/19), Fahima Khatun (1/21), and Rabeya Khan (1/20) all chipping in with crucial wickets, restricting Scotland to 103/7.

Sarah Bryce’s fighting knock not enough for scotland

Scotland's hopes rested on the shoulders of wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce, who played a valiant unbeaten knock of 49 off 52 balls. However, she received little support from her teammates, with only skipper Kathryn Bryce (11) and Priyanaz Chatterji (11) reaching double digits. Despite her efforts, Scotland fell 16 runs short, as Bangladesh's bowlers kept a tight grip on the game, securing a historic win for the team. This victory marked a strong start for Bangladesh in the tournament, showcasing their potential to make deep inroads in the competition.
