The Delhi Capitals put on a great show of teamwork as they clinched a strong win against the Mumbai Indians by 29 runs. This win helped them strengthen their position as the leaders on the points table, securing their fourth straight victory in the WPL 2024. It was also the first time the Mumbai Indians faced defeat while chasing a target in the Women’s Premier League.
Under the leadership of captain Meg Lanning, accompanied by star batter Jemimah Rodrigues, the Delhi Capitals constructed a formidable total of 192 for four against the Mumbai Indians. Lanning’s masterful 53 off 38 balls, embellished with six boundaries and two sixes, showcased her prowess as she orchestrated crucial partnerships throughout the innings.
Jemimah Rodrigues illuminated the latter stages of the innings, unleashing a barrage of boundaries with 8 fours and 3 sixes in her brisk 33-ball innings, propelling the Delhi Capitals towards the 200-run mark.
Contributions from Shafali Verma (28) and Alice Capsey (19) further bolstered the team’s tally. Pooja Vastrakar led the bowling charge for the Mumbai Indians, claiming figures of 1 for 20 in her spell, with additional wickets shared among Saika Ishaque (1/29), Shabnim Ismail (1/46), and Hayley Matthews (1/23).
Despite the enthralling display on the pitch, the match suffered from a lack of attendance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The opening pair of Lanning and Shafali set the tone with an aggressive onslaught against the opposition bowlers. Shafali, returning after a two-game absence, spearheaded the attack, while Lanning showcased her striking prowess.
Their partnership laid a solid foundation, allowing Capsey and Jemimah to contribute vital runs, propelling the Delhi Capitals to a formidable total. Facing mounting pressure, the aggressive approach of the Delhi Capitals saw them breach the 100-run mark by the 12th over.
Following Lanning’s dismissal after reaching her half-century, Jemimah assumed control, accelerating the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries, ultimately reaching her fifty in the 19th over with a six off Sciver-Brunt. The Delhi Capitals concluded their innings with an imposing total of 192 for four, setting a daunting target for the Mumbai Indians to chase.
