In the Women’s Premier League 2024, Mumbai Indians showcased a commanding performance, reclaiming their winning momentum on Saturday, March 2nd. Facing hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore, MI delivered a resounding victory, triumphing by 7 wickets in their fourth group stage encounter of the season.
The foundation for Mumbai’s success was laid by their disciplined bowling unit during the initial stages of the match, limiting RCB to a modest total of 131 runs in the first innings. However, it was the ferocious batting onslaught from MI that truly sealed the deal, leaving RCB disheartened.
With a brisk start led by Yastika Bhatia (31 off 15) and Hayley Matthews (26 off 21), Mumbai effortlessly chased down the target of 132 runs in just 15.1 overs.Despite the absence of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Mumbai Indians remained unfazed, as Nat Sciver-Brunt, the English international, efficiently marshaled her team to victory.
For RCB, this defeat marks a significant setback, as they now suffer consecutive losses in the WPL 2024. In their previous encounter against Delhi Capitals, despite a spirited batting performance, RCB fell short of chasing a daunting target of 195 runs. In this match, their struggle extended to both batting and bowling departments.
A notable aspect of RCB’s innings was the absence of any sixes, a stark contrast to their previous match where they collectively smashed a record 19 sixes alongside DC players. With top-order batswomen like Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, and others, RCB’s inability to clear the boundary was unexpected.
Early wickets compounded their woes, with Mandhana, Devine, and Richa Ghosh failing to make substantial contributions. However, a resilient partnership between Ellyse Perry (44* off 38) and Georgia Wareham (27 off 20) salvaged some respectability for RCB, preventing a sub-100 total.
Mumbai’s bowlers deserve commendation for their adaptability, consistently adjusting their strategies against each RCB batter. Apart from a solitary over from Sathyamoorthy Keerthana, none of the MI bowlers conceded runs at a rate exceeding 10 RPO. Pooja Vastrakar and Nat Sciver-Brunt stood out with two wickets each, maintaining impressive economy rates of 3.5 and 6.75 runs per over, respectively.
