India’s U19 World Cup captain Yash Dhull on Sunday became the only 3rd batter in the history of the Ranji Trophy to hit a hundred in each innings of his debut. The Delhi opener made merry in the 2nd innings of Delhi’s Elite Group H match against Tamil Nadu at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati. Yash Dhull, who led India to U19 World Cup glory earlier in February, hit 113 in 202 balls, smashing 14 fours and a six stand remained unbeaten as Delhi posted 228 for 0 before the Group H match ended in a draw.

Tamil Nadu took the first-innings lead after posting 494 in response to Delhi’s first innings total of 452 in a much where the batters dominated the proceedings. Yash Dhull’s 2nd innings hundred came after he hit 113 in the first innings, which was also his maiden outing in first-class cricket. Dhull ended the drawn fixture with 226 runs, establishing his credentials as one of the most promising young batters going around. With the twin hundreds on debut, Yash Dhull joined an elite list of batters who have scored hundreds in each innings of their Ranji Trophy debut.

Yash Dhull also joined a celebrated list of Delhi cricketers, including Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Surinder Khanna, Madan Lal, Ajay Sharma, Raman Lamba, and Rishabh Pant. Dhull had played in the middle-order all through his nascent career and also batted at No.4 for India at the U19 World Cup earlier this month. However, when the opportunity to open the innings for Delhi in his first-class debut came up, Dhull was prepared. Yash Dhull always knew that a smooth transition from age-group to first-class level can only happen if he is ready to counter challenges and that is precisely what worked for him on his Ranji Trophy debut for Delhi against Tamil Nadu.

“In my cricket career, there has been a lot of coaches but someone who had guided me from childhood is Rajesh Nagar sir. Nagar sir had told me that when Ranji Trophy will come, I might be asked to open, so I should be mentally prepared,” Dhull had told the Press Trust of India. Dhull has had a dream run in February as he hit a match-winning hundred against Australia in the semi-final of the U19 World Cup before lifting the trophy. He was then bought by Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction for Rs 50 lakh days before his dream Ranji Trophy debut.
