Indian wrestlers have yet to win an Olympic medal. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for being overweight in the Women’s Freestyle 50kg final, and Nisha Dahiya got injured during her 68kg freestyle quarterfinal.
Vinesh Phogat's disqualification and appeal
At the Paris Olympics, Indian wrestlers faced disappointment as none managed to secure a medal. Vinesh Phogat, disqualified for being overweight, was replaced in the final by Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom she had beaten in the semifinal. Vinesh had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for a joint silver medal after failing to meet the weight limit by just 100 grams.
Nisha Dahiya was close to making history but got injured during her semifinal match against North Korea’s Pak Sol-gum. She was in severe pain and ended up losing the match.
Yuvraj Singh’s tribute to Vinesh and Nisha
Yuvraj Singh dedicated a heartfelt post showering praises on both Vinesh Phogat and Nisha Dahiya. He wrote, "Nisha’s solid effort, despite suffering an injury, remind us that true winners are defined by their courage, not just their victories. Vinesh on the other hand, despite facing a heartbreaking disqualification, showed the true meaning of a warrior—one who fights with heart and does not give up. Wishing you strength and fulfillment for your next chapter."
