The 2024 IPL final was a one-sided story with Kolkata Knight Riders beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets. SRH scored 113 while KKR managed to chase the target in 10.3 overs.
Amidst this, one of the hottest discussions has been that of former India and Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni. The 2024 season could have been his last but so far there hasn’t been any official announcement from him or the CSK team management.
The big question is who can replace the 42-year-old if he retires before the next season. In this piece, we will discuss three players who can replace MS Dhoni in the squad. The players mentioned in the list have the skills to replace him in the side but they will need some time before they match the calibre of MS Dhoni. We take a look at these three players in detail:
The Kiwi left-hander has done a decent job for CSK so far. The 32-year-old is also a handy wicket-keeping option as far as his neat glovework is concerned behind the stumps. He has taken 8 catches as a wicketkeeper for CSK.
Although the wicketkeeper batsman couldn’t play in the IPL 2024 season due to an injury Conway has scored 924 runs in 23 IPL games registering 9 half-centuries with a highest score of an unbeaten 92.
The South Africa wicket-keeper batter has scored 3157 runs in 107 IPL games with a highest score of an unbeaten 140 registering 23 half-centuries and 2 centuries with a strike rate of 134.23. He has registered 67 catches and 15 stumpings as a wicket keeper registering 82 dismissals overall.
His form looked below par during the 2024 season where he scored just 250 runs in 11 games due to which Lucknow Super Giants might release him ahead of the next season. Chennai Super Kings can surely bet on him as MS Dhoni’s replacement.
The 25-year-old is an exciting talent and a surprising addition to our list but he needs to be groomed and given enough game time. Currently, the Uttarakhand-born plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore but Chennai Super Kings franchise owners should have a look at him ahead of the next season as the left-hander can play big shots.
Although he hasn’t got impressive numbers on his side, if he gets enough game time he can surely be a match-winner in the long run. The wicketkeeper batter has scored 318 runs in 24 IPL games so far with a strike rate of 119.10 and a highest score of 66. He has looked impressive behind the stumps taking 17 catches.
