When David Warner calls it a day he will certainly go down as one of the best openers in the game, across formats. Through a long career starting back in 2008, David Warner has achieved a lot, making his presence a constant part of the Australian line-up. He bought the flair Australia wanted up top as he started to bring T20 like starts before T20 revolutionized the game.
After a long career, involving controversies, and character changing incidence, which saw Warner go from being the pocket rocket to a fun loving person on Social Media, David Warner gets a chance, which is in all likelihood his last chance, in the longest format. For the past two years, David Warner’s Test form has been among the discussions. He suffered with a lot of low scores over the period, with his rut ending in Sydney at the end of last year, as he made a century in his 100th Test.
Shortly after, David Warner and Australia started a new season which had them touring India and then England. Warner’s tour in India lasted three innings, which consisted of low scores as he went home to nurse an elbow injury following the second Test. Despite the low scores though, David Warner has been given a chance to prove that he deserves to leave on his own terms as he gets a call for the WTC Finals, and the First Two Ashes Test.
With three Tests left, the heat is on Warner. He has bought himself time with his double century, but his record in England leaves him in a spot of bother. Ghosts of the last Ashes too will strongly be on his mind, as David Warner average 9.5 across ten innings last time he was in England, with Stuart Broad tormenting him.
After facing India, he will have to go up against Stuart Broad yet again, in a battle which could well make or break David Warner’s Test Career. With white-ball Cricket though, Warner is still in the scheme of things and is rather safe. He looks to be a vital part of Australia’s plans for the 2023 World Cup, and also the 2024 T20 World Cup, which could potentially be his last international outing. The ongoing IPL Season though is yet to see the best of David Warner, who briefly showed signs of fading.
Six games into the tournament, David Warner has four fifties. He is in the top five scorers list this season, but the nature of his knocks did raise concerns. His first three fifties were personally bothering, with Warner clearly struggling to time and place the ball with his usual ease. He could not rotate strike or find the fence with his normal ease, making him look like a shadow of the batter who once used to whack the ball for fun, and was second on the boundaries tally in IPL.
Finding the boundary was a concern from him in 2021 as well. David Warner though erased doubts over his ability in clinical fashion. After being named in the WTC Final squad, and facing a low score against the Knight Riders, a potentially buoyed David Warner took the field with a lot more freedom. He batted with a lot more confidence and found the fence with ease in vintage Warner fashion, which serves as an indicator that David Warner is not done yet. He is yet to hit a six this season, but going by the signs in the previous game, David Warner looks eager and as hungry as ever.
The confidence looks to be coming back, but the worries remain in Test Cricket. With a below average record in recent times, and with a torrid visit to England previously, the three Tests coming up could well be David Warner’s last stand, at least in the longer format. Whether he goes out on his own terms or is pushed out remains to be seen.
