Hosts India and the visitors England are ready for the first game of the three-match ODI series. Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur is hosting the ODI series opener on Thursday (February 6).
It is an important ODI series for both India and England as they are preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host from February 19 to March 9. Before this ODI series, they played a five-match T20I series, where the hosts India won by 4-1.
Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, vice-captain Shubman Gill, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav are returning to the ODI squad, while Mohammed Shami is likely to return to the ODI squad after the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 Final. Leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who just won the Player of the Series award for picking up 14 wickets in the India vs England T20I series, can also make his ODI debut in the series opener.
On the other hand, England star Joe Root is set to return to the ODI format. His last ODI was against Pakistan in Kolkata during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. Except for him, all other English players were busy in the recently concluded T20I series in India. It will be also England's first ODI under the head coach Brendon McCullum.
