In a massive statement, Gautam Gambhir compared Ravichandran Ashwin to cricket legend Kapil Dev after Ashwin passed him during the Mohali Test on Sunday against Sri Lanka to enter the elite list of top-10 wicket-takers in Test cricket history. Ashwin, who became India’s ninth wicket-taker overall on Sunday, surpassed Kapil to become the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests.
In the series opener in Mohali, Ashwin took six wickets as India won by an innings and 222 runs. A feather was added to Ashwin’s cap en route to his bowling figures. As much as Ashwin has had an impact on the game as did the legendary all-rounder, Gambhir acknowledged to Star Sports after India took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Ashwin’s 434 wickets came from just 85 appearances while Kapil’s came from 131 games. With his 619 scalps in 132 matches, he now trails only the legend, Anil Kumble.“I would say on a par with Kapil Dev, not second. Since Ashwin has had such an impact on the game, he has five Test hundreds. Gambhir stated during a recent press conference that Ashwin’s spell in Melbourne was the best off-spinner spell he had ever seen in his entire career.
”In Australian conditions, no off-spinner has managed to generate such an impact with the Kookaburra ball as he did on the first day against Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Ashwin, however, has as big an impact as Kapil Dev,” he concluded.
