IPL 2022 has seen a lot of wonderful pacers come out, while some of the more experienced stars have also made decent statements. With the World Cup coming up in a few months, India are now spoilt for options and have a good pool of bowlers to pick from.
Jasprit Bumrah has been pretty good in IPL 2022 despite the lack of support and victories. He carried the Mumbai bowling attack, and despite not being the best fast bowler this season he continues to be India’s best bowler. His place is unquestionable and the only question would be regarding who pairs him at the World Cup.
Mohammad Shami is another pacer who is almost guaranteed a spot in the World Cup side. He is India’s best pacer along with Jasprit Bumrah, across formats, and picturing a squad without him seems tough. Furthermore, Mohammad Shami has been wonderful in IPL 2022. He is among the best powerplay bowlers this season, taking wickets and bowling economically, making him a potent weapon upfront.
Following the T20 World Cup last year, Bhuvneshwar Kumar seemed done with the Indian team. His bowling lacked intensity, but has now picked up again. This season, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s pace came back to the 130s range, the accuracy and swing are back, and with Bhuvneshwar back at his best, he is likely to take back his place as India’s new-ball master.
Harshal Patel is receiving a lot of praise for his death over exploits. He has an exceptional range of slower balls and gets a lot of wickets in the death. IPL 2021 was a career-changer for him and despite being a little quieter in IPL 2022, Harshal Patel stands a strong chance of making the squad thanks to his death bowling exploits.
Umran Malik has shaken IPL 2022 with his pace. He recently clocked 157 KPH and can make a huge impact at the World Cup given it is in Australia. Umran Malik though, struggles a touch with accuracy and has gone for a lot of runs on his bad day. On his day though, he has the capability and to run though sides and take his team home single-handedly. With his impressive pace, Umran Malik may be fast-tracked into the national side, but maybe as a reserve rather than a squad member.
Arshdeep Singh has been the best death bowler in IPL 2022. His economy in the last five overs has been incredible, choking batters with his Yorkers in high-pressure situations. His left-arm angle is another variety he provides, and despite the lack of wickets, he could be a handy customer in the death overs.
Had it not been for injury, Natarajan could have been in the World Cup squad last year. His left-arm angle and accurate Yorkers make him an asset as he can come in as a trump card to both restrict batters and take wickets when needed. While he offers similar skillsets to Arshdeep Singh, Natarajan has the benefit of being a better wicket-taker and stands a decent chance of getting into the squad, despite the abundance of options.
Before IPL 2022, Chahar would have given himself a strong chance of making the World Cup squad. With injury and the resurgence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar though, Chahar’s chances of making the squad seems low. He is a handy player, but with similar skillsets to Kumar, Chahar may not be too fortunate this time around.
Like Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur would have been hopeful of a World Cup spot before the IPL. Shardul Thakur though hasn’t been at his best in IPL 2022. While he has contributed, and also provided a few cameos with the bat, the return of Hardik Pandya and presence of Ravindra Jadeja makes it tough for India to include another bowler who could bat a fair bit.
Umesh Yadav has made a late entry into the World Cup probable. Before IPL 2022 he was nowhere near the white-ball teams but his new-ball exploits may give him some hope of getting a spot. He is in incredible form, picking wickets upfront, and his pace is still very good, going past the 140s mark wth ease. His selection though is still a little unlikely with Shami going well, but he definitely has put his name up out of nowhere.
