Chennai Super Kings have one of the finest win percentages in the IPL, and their skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, deserves a lot of credit for it. He has led the Chennai-based franchise from the tournament’s inception. A win against Chennai in the IPL is a difficult challenge for any side.

So, here is a list of the five IPL captains that led their club in at least two games against the Dhoni-led CSK arsenal but never won a single game.

1. Yuvraj Singh – 7 Defeats out of 7 Matches

Yuvraj Singh, a former swashbuckling Indian all-rounder, captained the Punjab Kings and Pune Warriors in the early stages of his IPL career. In 2008, he made his captaincy debut against the Chennai Super Kings, which he lost.

Following the encounter, Yuvraj led his squad six more times in a loss to the Chennai-based club. He is one of the only captains to have led his team in more than three games against CSK and never won.

2. Kane Williamson – 5 Defeats out of 5 Matches

New Zealand’s impeccable batter, Kane Williamson, had a mixed bag of a captaincy stint with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. In his inaugural captaincy tenure in the 2018 edition, he pulled off his team to the finals. But, Chennai Super Kings had some other plans for him. 

Having faced the MS Dhoni-led squad five times and four times, in the 2018 edition (Two League-stage and Two Playoffs matches), Kane Williamson wasn’t able to obtain a win against the Dhoni-led CSK squad.

3. KL Rahul – 3 Defeats out of 3 Matches

KL Rahul made his captaincy debut with the Punjab Kings last year, and he is currently known for his flamboyant captaincy tenure with the Lucknow Super Giants in the recent 2022 season. Despite finishing higher in the IPL points table than the Chennai Super Kings in the 2020 season, Punjab failed to win a single league-stage match against CSK.

Punjab met Chennai once earlier this year during the first part of the IPL 2021 schedule and lost both games. KL Rahul will be eager to make his debut against CSK in Dubai on October 7.

4. Cameron White – 2 Defeats out of 2 Matches

Cameron White captained the Deccan Chargers against CSK in an IPL 2012 league match. That night in Visakhapatnam, the Super Kings demolished the Chargers by 74 runs.

The former Australian all-rounder captained the Sunrisers Hyderabad against the Chennai-based franchise in 2013. White’s squad pushed CSK to their maximum in the match, but ultimately lost by five wickets in the final over. MS Dhoni hit a magnificent 67-run knock to help his team win the game.

5. Eoin Morgan – 2 Defeats out of 2 Matches

Eoin Morgan, the 2019 Cricket World Cup winner, has struggled as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Chennai Super Kings in the 2020 edition. KKR defeated CSK once in IPL 2020, but the victory was led by Dinesh Karthik.

CSK defeated KKR by six wickets in the IPL 2020 rematch after Eoin Morgan took over as captain. The Chennai Super Kings defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring thriller at Wankhede Stadium in the 2021 edition.
