Indian bowler Kuldeep Yadav recently reached a notable milestone by taking his 300th international wicket, becoming just the fifth Indian spinner to do so. This feat marks him as one of the best spinners of his era.
Born on December 14, 1994, in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, Yadav originally wanted to be a left-arm seamer, having been inspired by bowling legends Wasim Akram and Zaheer Khan. Nonetheless, his potential was identified by his coach for wrist spin, which prompted him to model Shane Warne and establish his left-arm unorthodox spin. Even though he faced initial difficulties, such as thinking of giving up cricket after failing in selection trials for under-15s Yadav's determination brought him domestic success at Uttar Pradesh and Indian Premier League opportunities.
Yadav debuted for India in Test cricket against Australia on March 25, 2017, at Dharamshala, becoming the first left-arm wrist spinner for India in Test cricket. He made a significant mark by claiming four wickets in the first innings. His Test debut was followed by his ODI debut on June 23, 2017, against the West Indies, where he proved his mettle by claiming three wickets in his second match of the series. Yadav made his T20I debut soon after, on July 9, 2017, against the West Indies.
In his career, Yadav has accomplished great things:
Hat-Tricks: He became the third Indian bowler to have taken a hat-trick in an ODI, doing so against Australia at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on September 21, 2017. Later, on December 18, 2019, he became the first Indian to have taken two hat-tricks in international cricket, this time against the West Indies.
Record-Breaking Performances : On July 12, 2018, playing an ODI against England, Yadav took his career-best bowling figures of 6/25, a new record for the best bowling figures by a left-arm spinner in ODIs.
Up to his 300-wicket milestone, Yadav's international career statistics read:
Format | Matches | Wickets | Average |
Best Bowling |
T20Is | 40 | 69 | 140.07 | 5/17 |
ODIs | 109 | 174 | 26.47 | 6/25 |
Tests | 13 | 56 | 22.16 | 5/40 |
The path of Kuldeep Yadav, a young hopeful from Uttar Pradesh, to becoming one of international cricket's top spinners defines resilience, adaptability, and brilliance. His success remains a source of inspiration to young cricketers and a major source of India's cricketing success.
