When the side plays Sri Lanka in the first match of a two-match series in Mohali on March 4, Team India will return to Test cricket. Among the highlights of the Mohali Test is Virat Kohli’s participation as the 12th Indian to play the 100th Test and Rohit Sharma’s first stint as a full-time captain in the longest format.
In addition to Rahane and Pujara, a number of senior players have been dropped from the Indian Test squad. Some of the members of the selection committee are expected to participate in the first test, including Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer. In the past few years, Vihari has been an integral part of India’s Test squad. Despite scoring a century in his previous appearance, Vihari himself suggested that he shouldn’t have played in a certain Test. “I remember him coming to me during the Vizag Test and telling me that I should not have played it. Having scored 100 in the previous Test in Jamaica, Hanuma had played in that match. Typically, in Indian cricket, certain combinations are used. Even though we still won the match on Day 5, it required the class of Shami to get us there and it took a lot out of him,” stated Sridhar during a recent interaction with the press.
”The series was Rohit’s finest moment. Mayank was batting brilliantly and it was also Mayank’s first Test in India. As a captain, Hanuma knew the entire team would always be ahead of him. He knows,” he concluded.
