Virat Kohli led India to a 372-run victory in the Mumbai Test against New Zealand after returning to the side. Furthermore, the Indian team won the two-match Test series 1-0 and returned to the top of the rankings for Test teams with the record-breaking victory. After the match, the Indian skipper supported Ajinkya Rahane, his struggling, and out-of-form veteran batter. The performance of Rahane has been a topic of discussion in 2021, and it could be a factor that leads to him being replaced by Rohit Sharma as the next Test vice-captain, likely after the South Africa test series. In light of this, Pakistan’s former captain praised Kohli and gave reasons for why he is such a successful player. Butt praised Kohli’s statement supporting Rahane despite the latter’s poor performance this year on his YouTube channel.

“Virat Kohli’s success under the captaincy of Team India has been built on the fact that he supports his players when they most need them. The best captains in world cricket will always support their proven players when they are struggling. As a result of the amount of confidence these players gain when facing their struggles, they come out stronger and achieve unthinkable results,” Butt said.

Kohli’s players followed him through thick and thin and he believed in their ability to bounce back. ”As a batsman, he has also done well as the Indian vice-captain, leading the team in Australia to victory while Kohli was absent,” he concluded.
