Shreyas Iyer, the middle-order batter and the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, has been ruled out of the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia and Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season due to his back injury. The 28-year-old has been brawling with his severe back injury for quite some time now and has chosen to go through surgery to rectify the issue.
The bad news of Shreyas’s injury and withdrawal from the next IPL 2023 and the world Test Championship final has come as a big headache to both the Indian Cricket team and the Knight Riders. Iyer has been a key player for the Kolkata-based franchise and he was also the captain of this franchise. So, his absence will be felt deeply. His performance in IPL seasons got better and more impressive over the years. His ability to anchor the innings and his special no-look big shots over the covers and long-on at the end make him one of the most crucial and valuable players in the league.
The campaign of the Indian cricket Team will also miss Iyer’s presence in the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia which is held in England’s swinging condition that suits him perfectly. WTC’s First-time runner-up team India tries to win this for the first time, but Iyer’s back injury will be the biggest setback for team India. Iyer’s limited-over cricket stats impressed lots of Indian selectors and he was expected to play a crucial role as a middle-order batter in the final, but all went in vain.
Iyer had been struggling with his back for quite some time and it affected his play and performance on the field
In the previous IPL season, he missed some matches when he played for DC, for the same reasons. Despite taking medical treatments Iyer does not find any permanent solutions to his problem and that’s why he chooses surgery.
This decision of going through surgery was not an easy task for Iyer as it will keep him out of action for some time span. The recovery phase of this surgery is quite time-consuming and requires patience and discipline. But Iyer’s decision is good for his bright future and for his back. This prevents further injury to his back.
