Shubman Gill has hit 33 sixes this season. From 2020 to 2022 he has a combined tally of 32. Gill this year though has been on a different plane. From making a double-century to cap off 2022 and a T20 Century later in 2023, and a Test Century as well against Australia, Shubman Gill has done enough to cement himself in all formats of the game.
This season has been all him. While other youngsters and some veterans were in the spotlight for quiet a bit of the season, Gill has been quick to grab the attention back to himself. Three centuries in four innings, in T20 Cricket is a massive feat. The nature of his centuries though has been all the more respectable. His most recent century against the Mumbai Indians was dominant but in the most non-violent manner. He did not go about his business with brute force or through unorthodox shots but instead found the calmest of ways to shift through the gears.
From 37 off 26 in the ninth over, Shubman Gill first started by taking on Piyush Chawla and then hit three majestic sixers off Madhwal. By the 13th over he was on 98, and took himself there very smoothly. He played with the fields and found gaps even when Rohit Sharma plugged the entire off-side. He kept Rohit Sharma thinking, and the bowlers had no place to hide.
From being termed as an anchor batter, and after being released by KKR for his slower knocks, Shubman Gill has transformed as a batter. He may still not be termed a power hitter, but his strike rate has gone up rapidly over the last year. He continues to bat while minimizing risk, and has defined consistency in the last four innings.
He has his own template, and to add to his template, Shubman Gill has the greediness of a top batter. He showed his hunger against Bangalore when a high full-toss was called a wide-off Wayne Parnell. Knowing that it was well above his waist, Shubman Gill reviewed a wide call and got it overturned, allowing him to get a free hit while Gujarat was already a foot ahead in the game. That one little passage of play served as a teaser to the hunger in Shubman Gill.
He has one more game to go in this season, and his numbers at Ahmedabad have been extraordinary. He has done well throughout the season, and has stormed away on the orange cap list. Now, with only the Chennai Super Kings standing in the way of Gill and another IPL Title, Gill will be waiting to shove them aside with yet another performance. He started his season against them, making a commanding 60 odd, making easy work of Chennai’s bowling attack. With one more game to go, the Shubman Gill factor exists heavily as he grabs all the attention coming into the game.
