Inaugural ICC Champions Trophy winners South Africa started the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament with a thumping win against the tournament debutant Afghanistan in the first match of Group B.

South African captain Temba Bavuma chose to bat first at the National Stadium in Karachi, while Heinrich Klaasen was absent from the team due to precaution after an injury. South Africa scored 315/6 in 50 overs, while Afghanistan were all out for 208 runs, as the Proteas won by 107 runs.

Ryan Rickelton's first ODI century inspired three more 50s in South African innings

South Africa had a cautious start, and after the first powerplay, they mostly maintained the run rate of five per over. Opener Ryan Rickelton scored his maiden ODI century as the left-handed batter became the first South African wicketkeeper-batter to record a century in the ICC Champions Trophy. Before his freak run-out as bowler Rashid Khan's quick throw to the striker-end finished the opener's innings on 103 off 106 balls with seven fours and one six.

Meanwhile, captain Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram scored crucial 50s to move the total to big challenging. Bavuma scored 58 off 76 balls (five fours), Van der Dussen scored 52 off 46 balls (three fours and two sixes), and Markram scored 52 not out off 36 balls (six fours and one six).

Among the Afghan bowlers, Mohammad Nabi took two wickets (2/51), while Fazalhaq Farooqi (1/59), Azmatullah Omarzai (1/39), and Noor Ahmed (1/65) got one wicket each.

Only Rahmat Shah was the shining part in chasing

In reply, Afghanistan failed to provide a fight back to the challenging target on the tricky pitch. Apart from Rahmat Shah, who scored a fighting 90 off 92 balls with nine fours and one six and saved the team from a more embarrassing defeat, six other Afghan batters scored double-digit runs but all of them failed to reach the 20-run mark.

South African bowlers Kagiso Rabada (3/36), Wiaan Mulder (2/36), and Lungi Ngidi (2/56) managed to pick up more than one wicket, while Marco Jansen (1/32) and Keshav Maharaj (1/46) also got one wicket each. For his impressive batting performance, Proteas opener Ryan Rickelton won the Player of the Match award.

The first Group B match between Afghanistan and South Africa in Karachi on Friday could be one of the most significant fixtures in this side of the Champions Trophy draw, even with Australia and England in the mix.

Australia arrives depleted, having lost their last four ODIs, while England is struggling, winning just one out of eight white-ball games in India. South Africa, too, comes in after six consecutive ODI losses, but those defeats came without their key players, who were engaged in franchise T20 leagues. Now back at full strength, the Proteas will be eager to turn things around.

However, Afghanistan is riding high on form, having won eight of their last 10 ODIs, including a 2-1 series victory over South Africa in Sharjah last September. It's rare for Afghanistan to enter a game against South Africa as favorites, but given their recent performances, this could be one of those rare moments. Still, with South Africa’s senior players returning, the contest could be evenly poised.

Expect a high-stakes battle as both teams look to start their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign on a winning note.

AFG vs SA Probable Winners:

Conditions could be an important factor in deciding this match. Given their experience with Asian field conditions, the team may encounter few surprises on this pitch. That could make them favorites. They've also recently won ODIs. South Africa might be on the back foot in the match with foreign conditions and struggling to get results in their most recent ODIs. Afghanistan's batting lineup has historically struggled against South African bowling. South Africa has a better head-to-head record against Afghanistan, winning 2 of their last 3 games. Considering the team combination, South Africa is expected to win this match.

Afghanistan potential top four favorites? They did exceptionally well on slow pitches in the T20 World Cup in Dubai. They got to the top four their and are relatively unscathed by injury barring the loss of AM Ghazanfar. Their line-up has played probably the most ODI Cricket among teams in the recent past, and are very well settled. The spinners too are well equipped to make statements on the Pakistan tracks. South Africa though start potential favorites themselves. They are the ones who brought Afghanistan back to earth in the T20 World Cup, blowing Afghanistan away in the Semi-Finals. Afghanistan will want revenge and they know they have the line-up for that.

Afghanistan vs South Africa Key Players

Heinrich Klaasen

Seeing Glenn Phillips go about an effortless onslaught will give Heinrich Klaasen a lot of belief. His power is well known and clearing the Pakistani fences will be easy if he finds his range against the Afghanistan bowlers. He has had his struggles though taking on Rashid Khan, and that battle will be something to watch.

Stat: Klaasen was bowled by Rashid Khan in the 2023 World Cup.

Mohammad Nabi

Mohammad Nabi finally makes it to the Champions Trophy after playing in division three for Afghanistan. He has been around from the worst to best for Afghanistan and he wants more. He has hinted that he could continue in ODIs after the tournament and his experience will be very important particularly with the ball in the absence of Ghazanfar.

AFG vs SA Match Tips

There are likely to be some tough match-ups in the coming game. Afghanistan though will know that they are in for a challenge. South Africa gave them a hiding in the 2023 World cup and T20 World cup semi-final and are a tough side to beat.

Match Prediction: South Africa Will Win the Match

They have improved in all disciplines, and now have the opportunity to establish themselves as a major player ahead of next year's ICC Champions Trophy. Afghanistan has two players Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rashid Khan who are still young but have a lot of experience and consistently deliver world-class performances.

Afghanistan's left arm quick is showing a lot of improvement. He bowled really well in the first ODI with support from the pitch and his left-arm angle is allowing him to hit awkward lengths really well.

Lungi Ngidi

Lungi Ngidi started really well in the first ODI with the ball. He had a good new-ball spell but could not penetrate through the line-up with Afghanistan relatively under less pressure thanks to a smaller target. He is hitting good lengths though and that will be crucial as he looks to bring his side back to level.

South Africa are the more experienced side but the first ODI will give Afghanistan a lot of confidence. Experience though could keep South Africa in the middle and it will be interesting to see how both sides cope up.

Afghanistan has their first ODI win against South Africa. They won with ease as well against an inexperienced, but not so young South African side. SSouth Africa will be feeling that they have a lot of catching up to do. While they are filled with some new names, the old names too such as Aiden Markaram and Lungi Ngidi will be backed upon to contribute. For Afghanistan though, a feature was their pace bowling which was really good, helping them tie the South Africans down on a tough batting track.

After bundling out South Africa for only 106 runs, Afghanistan comfortably won the Sharjah ODI by six wickets. While it was their first victory against South Africa in any international cricket format, it was also the Afghans’ fifth-fastest ODI win.

It was the first ODI of the three-match ODI series between Afghanistan and South Africa in Sharjah. It was also their first international cricket meeting outside any ICC tournament. Afghanistan made the historical match memorable by dominating the complete ODI match.

Last June, Afghanistan had a heartbreaking exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after suffering a thrashing defeat against South Africa in the semi-final. In that game, Afghanistan were bundled out for only 56 runs on the tough batting pitch, and South Africa won that match by nine wickets. In the ODI series opener at Sharjah, Afghans set up a similar feeling for the Proteas.

South Africa were 36/7 at the end of the first powerplay

The left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi and off-spinner AM Ghazanfar provided a solid start for Afghanistan, as South Africa were struggling at 36/7 in 10 overs. Although the no.7 batter Wiaan Mulder fought with 52 runs off 84 balls, South Africa were all out for only 106 runs. It was South Africa’s joint seventh-lowest completed ODI total.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (4/35) took four wickets, while Ghazanfar (3/20) picked up three wickets. Also, the star leg-spinner Rashid Khan (2/30) claimed two wickets in that innings.

Afghanistan won by six wickets with 144 balls remaining

In chasing, although Afghans lost their top-order batters cheaply, they never let their control out of their hands. Afghans were 38/3 as the openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (0) and Riaz Hassan (16), and the no.3 batter Rahmat Shah (8) lost their wicket early. Also, the captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was dismissed on 16 runs when Afghanistan were 60/4.

Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib comfortably ended the game with a 47-run partnership for the unbroken fifth wicket. Omarzai scored 25 not out and Naib scored 34 not out as Afghanistan chased down the target in 26 overs after losing four wickets.

Afghanistan won the ODI by six wickets with 144 balls remaining. It was their fifth-fastest ODI win.
