In a significant setback for the Adelaide Strikers ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, Rashid Khan has opted out of BBL13 due to a back injury. The 25-year-old, holding the record as the all-time highest wicket-taker for the Strikers with 98 wickets in just 68 appearances, is slated for back surgery, forcing him to miss the entire forthcoming season set to begin on Thursday, December 7th.

Despite the Melbourne Stars attempting to secure the leg-spinner with the first pick in the draft, the Strikers successfully retained Rashid earlier this year.

“Rashid is a beloved member of the Strikers and a fan favorite who has been with us for seven years, so he will be sorely missed this summer,” expressed Adelaide Strikers GM of Cricket, Tim Nielsen, in a statement to cricket.com.au.

Nielsen emphasized Rashid’s affinity for Adelaide and the Strikers, pledging support as the cricketer undergoes treatment for his injury to ensure a sustained presence in the sport.

Injury to Rashid Khan’s Back Leads to BBL13 Exit

This setback comes on the heels of another notable player’s withdrawal, as Harry Brook, a star cricketer selected by the Melbourne Stars, opted out of the competition citing fatigue. Significantly, both Brook and Rashid Khan held the distinction of being the top two picks for the impending season.

As the BBL’s 2023/24 season commences on December 7th at the Gabba, featuring a match between the Stars and Brisbane Heat, the franchise is yet to announce a replacement but assures that the announcement will be made shortly.

<![CDATA[Can Brisbane Heat Complete What has Been a Perfect Turnaround?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/can-brisbane-heat-complete-what-has-been-a-perfect-turnaround/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/can-brisbane-heat-complete-what-has-been-a-perfect-turnaround/ Sat, 04 Feb 2023 07:11:54 GMT

On January 7th, when Brisbane Heat suffered defeat to the Perth Scorchers the playoffs, let alone the Finals were nowhere near their reach. They had only two wins in eight games and were at the bottom of the table. Come Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw, and Brisbane Heat managed to start a transformation.

A win in the Finals now will help them complete what could be the biggest turnaround in BBL History. Franchise Cricket often sees some interesting turnarounds with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 or Kolkata Knight Riders in 2021, doing a similar one too. How did Brisbane manage the turnaround though. Down and out, a change in leadership and an addition of experience bought them up.

Seniors back, Brisbane found their strength, although with the ball. Usman Khawaja, back as skipper, assisted his troops well and the bowlers delivered in each of their wins, as Brisbane found their way back. The batting too did a decent job in getting the side runs on the board, but it was the bowling attack which took a step forward despite the return of some of their best batters.

Brisbane Heat though did not have it easy despite a win streak. A two-run loss to Hobart Hurricanes in their last game had them struggling again. Their dream turnaround threatened to derail. The batting still looked unimpressive, especially with the team failing to chase down a mere total of 120 to secure qualification.

See Also: Indian U-19 Womens Team Sparks Potential for Change With World Cup Win (cricketwinner.com)

The loss resulted in them having to go through the hard way. They were left with five wins needed to get the title. They now have four and are chasing a fifth. The first three had the seniors in the side, and they were able to carry their momentum forward for each of the three. The fourth game, against Sydney Sixers, proved that they are still a force without the senior players.

With Khawaja, Labuschagne and Renshaw back on national duty, the rest of the team was put up against Sydney Sixers, last seasons Finalists, and a team that has been pretty consistent all season. Michael Neser, one of their few remaining seniors players though came good. He stepped up with the bat, his lesser skill, and changed the game on its head to take his side to the Finals. Knowing the top-order is light, he stood up, and played a really good knock on a slow pitch.

Now, with the Finals against a stronger Perth side, Brisbane Heat will need to look for heroes yet again. They start as undergods, but were underdogs for most of the second half. Without their experienced players though, and in a packed Perth stadium, the task ahead looks like a huge mountain to climb for them.

Their bowling looks good but they know their batting needs to stand-up, as that is the aspect which has been an issue for them all season. It’s T20 Cricket though, and one good moment, one good innings, one good over, or one good spell is all it takes. Brisbane Heat has already produced a miracle to get here. They will come to Perth hoping for another Miracle from one of their players as they look to seal a BBL Title, 10 years after their last one, which incidentally was the last time they made the Finals too.

SCO vs HEA, Final Preview

Perth Scorchers take on Brisbane Heat in the 2022-23 Big Bash League Final on Saturday evening. The Scorchers won the tournament last year, finished top of the group stage, and beat Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier on January 28th. Brisbane Heat defeated the Sixers in Thursday’s Challenger at the SCG. Perth Scorchers were the best team in BBL11 and need one more victory to make it back-to-back titles. In front of their home fans, they will be very hard to beat in this match. Brisbane Heat has won many admirers with their switch in form from mid-January onwards. However, this final match may prove too much for them against the current holders.

SCO vs HEA, Final Pitch Report

Quick bowlers have had the most joy on this pitch during BBL12. There is pace in the wicket but it is not always that easy for batting on. A par score will be around 165 – 170. The forecast is for a fine and clear evening in Perth after a very warm day.

Top Picks – Brisbane Heat

 • Michael Neser – The experienced bowling all-rounder was the Player of the Match in the Challenger. He took 2-28 before hitting 48 not out to take his team to this final.

 • Josh Brown – The 29 year old right-hander hit two sixes and one four at the top of the order in the successful chase against Sydney Sixers and gave the innings a much needed boost.

Top Picks – Perth Scorchers

 • Cameron Bancroft – The right-handed opener came into the team a third of the way through the campaign and has scored 342 runs at an average of 57.

 • Andrew Tye – The 36 year old pace bowler has an excellent record in the BBL across all seasons and has had another fine campaign, leading the attack.

SCO vs HEA Final Probable winners:

Brisbane Heat should not be discounted ahead of this game due to their recent run of form. However, player for player, and looking at performances over the entire tournament, Perth Scorchers are the top team. This is the first time in three seasons that Sydney Sixers have not made the BBL final but these two teams certainly deserve to be contesting this match. This will be the third year in a row that Perth Scorchers are in the final and that experience could prove critical. Considering the team combination, Perth Scorchers is expected to win this match.

The BBL Final is a journey of two contrasting teams. The Perth Scorchers have easily been the best yet again as they marched through to the Finals without too many blips. Brisbane Heat though were at the bottom of the table mid-way, but now with seven wins in eight games they are in their first Final in 10 years. They surpassed all odds to come through the hard way, and will have to surpass a lot more odds if they are to beat the Scorchers in the Finals.

The Scorchers depth has been very good this season. They’ve had some young talent come in and step up. Brisbane though cannot feel the same way about their side. Without the national players, they struggled early on, and even against Sydney Sixers, until Michael Neser pulled of a blinder. With a sell-out crowd ahead, the heat is on for the Finals.

SCO vs HEA Key Players

Spencer Johnson

Despite not standing out in the wickets column, Spencer Johnson has been a break-out star this season. He has the pace, and with early wickets really important when facing a big team in the Finals, Spencer Johnson has a huge opportunity to make an impact on the game.

Jason Behrendorff

With Trent Boult out, Jason Behrendorff stepped up nicely as the left-arm pacer up front. He is getting the ball to move well and his form has helped Perth Scorchers fall in place after a relatively slow start in their tournament.

Topmost Picks for SIX vs HEA Dream11 Prediction, Challenger:

Top Picks – Brisbane Heat

 • Michael Neser – The pace bowling all-rounder picked up two more wickets against Melbourne Renegades in the Knockout. He dismissed Aaron Finch and Will Sutherland.

 • Jimmy Peirson – Batting in the middle order and ready to take on the captaincy again, Peirson has scored over 300 runs in BBL12 and has been a fine wicket keeper.

Top Picks – Sydney Sixers

 • Sean Abbott – The bowling all-rounder is the leading wicket taker across the tournament. He has a strike rate of every 10.8 balls from 50.4 overs bowled.

 • Moises Henriques – The skipper’s third half-century of the tournament took his run tally to over 300. Without Steve Smith’s runs, Henriques becomes even more important to the batting line-up.

SIX vs HEA Challenger Probable winners:

Both teams are not at full strength with the Australia Test team off to India. Brisbane Heat have lost three of their best batters whereas Sydney Sixers have lost only one of theirs. It is the Sixers who look the strongest. With the prize of a BBL final against Perth Scorchers up for grabs, we are expecting a very entertaining Challenger fixture at the SCG. Brisbane Heat look far weaker without their three Test batters but Steve Smith is arguably a bigger loss for Sydney Sixers. However, the Sixers have Sean Abbott who is a fantastic BBL bowler and we expect him to make the difference. Considering the team combination, Sydney Sixers is expected to win this match.

Both the Sixers and Heat will have to contend with the loss of key players. Sydney lose Steve Smith while Heat lose Khawaja and Labuschagne. Heat made some incredible strides after the national stars returned and now will feel they are in trouble as they make their way through with the others who are remaining in the squad.

Michael Neser

Brisbane are losing a lot of talent with national duty calling. Neser is still around though and will have to make a huge contribution if Brisbane are to make their way to the Finals.

Steven Smith

Steven Smith, an all time great for Australia, has been in doubt for the T20I side in recent times. With Smith lacking fire-power and considering Mitchell Marsh’s success at number three, Steve Smith was phased out for Tim David, in a bid to add more fire power. In four games at the BBL so far though, Steve Smith has added another point to the debate over his spot in the T20 side. As an opener, he came in for four games, and is the ninth leading run-scorer in the current season, with them most sixes in the tournament and two centuries. He now gave himself a case to make the squad as an opener, and could find himself back with Aaron Finch’s future in the Australian team uncertain.

Matthew Short

Matthew Short from the Adelaide Strikers had his moments in the tournament. With Chris Lynn as his partner, he held his own and also provided one of the best knocks in the BBL with a century to chase down 230. His style of play makes him an asset in T20 Cricket. As an opener he does not take too long to get underway. With the ball too, Matthew Short is very handy. He can chip in with a few overs, and is very useful in the powerplay. On the field too, Short has taken some sharp catches, and with leadership credentials to add too, he has enough on his resume to be considered by the selectors.

Aaron Hardie

Aaron Hardie came into this season on the back of some incredible performances in the Sheffield Shield. He has been a part of the Perth Scorchers for a while and finally got a decent run in the eleven. Replacing Mitchell Marsh, Aaron Hardie started at 6, and performed very well. He was promoted to three later on and continued his good season. Due to injury concerns, he did not bowl too much, but can be a handy bowler on his day.

Josh Inglis

Josh Inglis is another talent who has been on the Australian team fringes for a long time. He missed out on the T20 World Cup with a freakish injury but came back quickly to prove his worth as a middle-order batter. He can open the batting, come up with flashy shots in the middle-order and is a very good wicket-keeper, making him a really good candidate for the wicket-keeper spot after Matthew Wade retires.

Sean Abbott

Sean Abbott is a BBL Champion. He has some incredible numbers in the tournament but always ends up behind the pecking order when it comes to the Australian team. He is still on and around the fringes for the white-ball side, and this season has been as good as any for him. With the big three likely to have their workload managed, Sean Abbott could finally see opportunities come his way in the coming days.

Paddy Dooley

Paddy Dooley with his unique action and leg-spin became a surprise trump card for the Hobart Hurricanes. With 19 wickets in 10 games, he became their go to bowler and is now a massive option for the T20 World Cup which will be played in the West Indies, where the pitches are known to be slow and low.

Marnus is known as an energetic character who clearly enjoys his time out in the field. As a batter though, he has not cracked T20 Cricket yet. He is a handy spinner, but his main job, batting still needs to be proven, and he will want to prove himself in the upcoming BBL Stint.

Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch took the battle to the Scorchers a couple days ago. He completely dominated as he broke some records that night. With Finch back in form and his captaincy going well Renegades are going to look a lot more threatening at the Playoffs.

Top Picks – Brisbane Heat

 • Usman Khawaja- the skipper finally produced a big score and also took the Player of the Match Award against Sydney Thunder. It was his first score over 24 in the campaign.

 • Michael Neser- with the rain keeping Sydney Thunder’s innings down to only 6.5 overs on Friday, their main strike-bowler will be fresh for this after bowing only 1.5 overs in the last match.

Top Picks – Melbourne Renegades

 • Aaron Finch- the skipper has had a brilliant season in the BBL 2023 and is averaging 41.80 from 14 innings. He has scored four half-centuries across BBL12.

 • Tom Rogers- only three bowlers have taken more wickets than Rogers across this competition. He also has a five-wicket haul to his name in the tournament.

REN vs HEA Knockout Probable winners:

Neither team has been particularly consistent with the bat throughout this tournament but in Aaron Finch, Melbourne Renegades have a player who has made big scores. He could be the difference in this match. This is a huge play-off fixture with the winner going through to play in the Challenger on February 2nd. Both teams have seen their fortunes improve over the second half of the season but are capable of great and very poor displays. We are backing Melbourne Renegades to use their knowledge from the previous two victories over Brisbane Heat and to come out on top again.
