Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been reported by the umpires due to a suspect bowling action while playing for Surrey in this season's County Championship. However, Shakib was asked to undergo an analysis of his bowling action by the England and Wales Cricket Board as well.

However, Shakib claimed nine wickets for Surrey in a thrilling Championship clash against Somerset at Taunton in September where the all-rounder bowled more than 63 overs and scalped nine wickets. However, it has now been learnt that the on-field umpires, Steve O'Shaughnessy and David Millns, subsequently considered his bowling action to be suspect as well.

Shakib al Hasan was considered as one of the best all-rounders in world cricket

Meanwhile, it was Shakib's first appearance in the competition since a brief period with Worcestershire in 2010-11, having decided to play for Surrey for a short term as eight players were absent on national duty. It is also understood that Shakib al Hasan is not suspended from playing but he will need to undergo further tests in an approved location soon as well.

However, Shakib al Hasan's bowling action has never come under scrutiny during his more than 17-year career, which saw him claim 712 wickets across 447 international matches.

Shakib al Hasan announced his retirement recently

"The matter (Shakib's suspect bowling action) has no connection to international cricket or domestic cricket in other countries. The matter is under ECB jurisdiction and not related to ICC or other boards," a BCB official said on Monday when he was asked if Shakib wants to further play domestic cricket in England in that case he will have to appear in a test.

However, Shakib al Hasan was not picked for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. He also insisted that he needed some more time to recover after being asked not to return home to play his farewell Test against South Africa as well - the thing he wished for while announcing his retirement as well.

Visitors Leicestershire started their second innings by trailing 180 runs. Once again, the Indian leg-spinner Chahal dominated with the ball as he completed that innings with the bowling figures of 43-5-134-5. As a result, Leicestershire were all out for 316 runs and set a 137-run target for Northamptonshire.

In their second innings, Leicestershire were once struggling at 92/7, where Chahal bagged four wickets. However, desperate Scott Currie then produced two 100+ partnerships for the next wickets to disturb the hosts. After his 101-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Tom Scriven, Currie also set up another 110-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Sam Wood.

While Currie was dominating with 120 runs, Chahal dismissed him to complete his fifer. Scriven scored 48 runs, and Wood was not out on 57 runs.

The latest fifer was Chahal’s fourth fifer in his first-class career. He ended the match against Leicestershire with nine wickets for 216 runs.

Chahal recorded the best bowling figures in a match in last game

During Northamptonshire’s previous match against Derbyshire, Chahal recorded his first nine-wicket haul in a first-class match as he finished that game with nine wickets for 99 runs. After recording five for 45 runs, Chahal picked up another four wickets in the fourth innings after conceding 54 runs. His bowling performance played a crucial role in his team’s victory by 133 runs. It was Northamptonshire’s first win in the ongoing County Championship Division Two season.

As Chahal is in great form, we won’t be surprised if the 34-year-old Indian leg-spinner makes his Test debut soon.

After claiming his third first-class fifer (5/45), Chahal picked up another four wickets in the fourth innings of the match (4/54). While the last-placed team in the points table Derbyshire (107 points in 12 matches) had the fourth innings target of 266 runs, they were bundled out for only 132 runs. Only the unbeaten batter Wayne Madsen (48) reached the 20-run mark in that innings.

Seventh-placed Northamptonshire (114 points in 12 matches), who are just above the last-placed Derbyshire in the points table, recorded their first win of this County Championship season with this 133-run win.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal continued to impress in the United Kingdom with a standout performance for Northamptonshire. In the ongoing County Championship season, Chahal claimed his first five-wicket haul, playing a pivotal role in his team’s match against Derbyshire at the County Ground in Northampton. This achievement marks Chahal’s third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, underscoring his growing prowess with the red ball in England.

Chahal’s match-winning performance

Yuzvendra Chahal finished with remarkable figures of 5 for 45, delivering a crucial spell of bowling that helped Northamptonshire secure a 54-run lead in the first innings. Chahal received significant support from off-spinner Rob Keogh, as the duo dismantled Derbyshire’s batting lineup. At one point, Derbyshire seemed in control at 150 for 4 on Day 2, but they collapsed dramatically, losing their last six wickets for just 15 runs. Chahal’s spell was instrumental in this turnaround, as he claimed the vital wicket of Wayne Madsen, who was well set at 47, by spinning the ball sharply to hit the top of the off-stump twice.

A valuable addition to Northamptonshire

Chahal’s performance has been a major boost for Northamptonshire during the English summer. His five-wicket haul in the County Championship follows a similar feat in the One-Day Cup match he played against his former club, Kent, on August 14. Despite a modest start with just one wicket in his first two County Championship Division Two matches, Chahal is now poised to build on this impressive performance. He has signed on to play a total of five first-class matches this season for Northamptonshire, and his recent success indicates a promising continuation of his impactful stint in English cricket.

Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has joined Lancashire County Cricket Club for the next five weeks. Known for his standout performance with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2024 title win, he will participate in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and the final two rounds of the Vitality County Championship in late August.

Lancashire County Cricket Club confirmed his signing in a statement on Friday. Venkatesh, the energetic Madhya Pradesh all-rounder, is excited about this chance and aims to make a strong comeback to the Indian national team.

Venkatesh’s excitement about county cricket debut

“I am incredibly excited about heading over to England and to have the opportunity to play county cricket for the first time in my career. Lancashire is a very historic county with a long history of welcoming Indian players to their club. I am looking forward to emulating the likes of Farokh Engineer, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and most recently, Washington Sundar in wearing the Red Rose colours at Emirates Old Trafford,” Venkatesh stated.

“To test my skills in both one-day and first-class cricket in English conditions is going to really benefit my game. I hope that I can entertain the fans and help my Lancashire teammates to achieve their targets in both formats this summer.”, He added.

Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s Director of Cricket Performance, is thrilled about the new addition. “Venkatesh will add experience to a young side during the One-Day Cup, whilst providing an explosive batting option in the middle-order and another seam bowler that we can turn to with the ball,” Chilton said. He confirmed that Venkatesh will play in the County games against Surrey and Hampshire.

Venkatesh’s plans to return for Duleep Trophy

Media reports suggest that Venkatesh has not agreed to a long term contract, as he wants to return to India in time for the Duleep Trophy, which starts on September 5. He plans to use this domestic tournament to re enter the Indian national team setup.

The four squads for the Duleep Trophy will be chosen after India’s tour to Zimbabwe. Venkatesh’s performances for Lancashire will be closely watched by selectors as they finalize the teams for this prestigious domestic competition.

<![CDATA[James Anderson to join England's coaching staff as bowling mentor after his retirement from Test cricket]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/james-anderson-to-join-englands-coaching-staff-as-bowling-mentor-after-his-retirement-from-test-cricket/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/james-anderson-to-join-englands-coaching-staff-as-bowling-mentor-after-his-retirement-from-test-cricket/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 13:57:47 GMT

James Anderson, the most successful fast bowler in Test cricket, will retire after the Test match against the West Indies at Lord’s. After retiring, he will join England’s coaching staff as a fast-bowling mentor.

At 41, Anderson is ending his long international career because England has decided to move forward without him. Rob Key, the managing director of England Cricket, highlighted Anderson’s value. “He has so much to offer English cricket. We don’t want to lose that,” said Key. “When we asked him, he was keen. He will have many options. English cricket would be lucky if he stays involved.”

Anderson current playing status and future with Lancashire

Anderson, who has taken 700 Test wickets, is currently playing for Lancashire against Nottinghamshire in the County Championship at Southport. His future with Lancashire is uncertain, but Key confirmed that Anderson will be with the England team “all summer.” “What he does with Lancashire will be decided after the Lord’s Test,” Key added. “We need to discuss what he thinks is best. So far, everything has been focused on this Test match.”

For the series against the West Indies, England has named a fresh-looking squad for the first two of the three Tests. Nottinghamshire pace bowler Dillon Pennington and Surrey’s Gus Atkinson, who has been in a Test squad but hasn’t played, have been called up. Ollie Robinson has been left out, and Mark Wood will miss the start of the series after the T20 World Cup.

In a surprising move, uncapped Jamie Smith will keep wicket instead of Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes. Shoaib Bashir replaces his Somerset teammate Jack Leach as the main spinner.

“Sometimes you select players for their potential and where you think they can progress,” said Key, a former England batter. “This is just the beginning for Jamie Smith. We believe he will be a fantastic international cricketer.”
