In a shocking development, the South African Police Service which goes by the name of Hawks made headlines by arresting three former South African cricketers, Ethy Mbhalati, Thami Tsolekile, and Lonwabo Tsotsobe for their alleged role in match-fixing during the 2015/2016 domestic T20 Ram Slam Challenge.

These arrests were made after a whistleblower came forward in October 2016 to reveal the details of the heinous act of the trio. Following that development, a detailed investigation was launched by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit in a bid to assess the depth and gravity of the crime.

Details of their match-fixing charges

In a statement released on Friday, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) confirmed the arrests. Tsolekile and Tsotsobe were detained on November 28 and 29, respectively, while Mbhalati was apprehended on November 18.

Mbhalati made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court with his case now being deferred to 20 February 2025. While for Tsolekile and Tsotsobe, the duo has been charged with five counts of corruption under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. Their respective cases have also been deferred to 26 February 2025.

Cricket South Africa’s crackdown on match-fixing scandals

The arrest of Mbhalati, Tsolekile, and Tsotsobe is not the first major scandal to be unmasked by Cricket South Africa (CSA). Prior to this corruption scandal, former Proteas cricketer Gulam Bodi was also identified and punished by the national cricketing body with a five-year jail term whereas Jean Symes and Pumi Matshikwe were given suspended sentences after pleading guilty in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Lieutenant General and head of the DPCI Godfrey Lebey praised the efforts of the investigation team for identifying the culprits and getting to the bottom of this match-fixing plot. “Corruption undermines the integrity of sport, and the Hawks are determined to safeguard the values of fairness and professionalism in all areas of society. We thank Cricket South Africa for their cooperation and commitment to addressing this scourge.”

This development solidifies Cricket South Africa's stance towards combating corruption in sports and highlights just how determined the cricketing body is to maintain the integrity of the game.

It was a moment of joy for the visitors as South Africa produced a special victory against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur to take an early 1-0 lead in a two-match Test series. The match came to a close during the early hours of day four as South Africa managed to get the most out of the second new ball to wind up the Bangladeshi tail in quick time. Needing only a meager 106, South Africa comfortably got home with seven wickets to spare. Kyle Verreynne was the standout batter for South Africa as his 114 not only bailed the visitors out of imminent danger but also put them on the patch of an emphatic win.

This victory also marked the first Test win for the Proteas in 10 years on Asia soil. The last time the African nation emerged victorious in the subcontinent was way back in 2014 against Sri Lanka in Galle. In the process, South Africa have also managed to put an end to their embarrassingly long losing streak of nine Tests on Asian soil. The losing streak was initiated during their tour to India from Nagpur in 2015.

Historic first Test win against Bangladesh since 2008

Rabada, Mulder, and Maharaj ran riot to snap three wickets apiece to obliterate Bangladesh for only 106. While doing so, Rabada also succeeded in getting past the 300 Test wickets landmark. But by the end of day one, thanks to some resilient bowling from Taijul, South Africa found themselves in trouble at 108-6. on day two, Verreynne put his hand up and along with the assistance of Mulder, started performing the repair work for the visitors. The pair batted under testing conditions to add a galloping 119 runs for the seventh wicket to virtually bat the hosts out of the game.

After amassing a lead of 202 runs, the writing was on the wall for Bangladesh. Nevertheless, Mehidy and Taijul tried to battle it out to delay the inevitable but South Africa came top on day four to prevent the Bangladeshi lead from going much further beyond their control.   Verreynne did not have to bat again in the second innings as De Zorzi and Stubbs slammed steady cameos of 41 & 30 respectively to steer South Africa to a seven-wicket win.

Interestingly enough, this is also South Africa's maiden Test win in Bangladesh in 16 years. Their last away test win against the Tigers came in 2008 in Chattogram when Smith along with McKenzie starred with the bat to register a mammoth opening stand of 415 runs which at present is still the highest-ever recorded opening stand in Test cricket.

This win has now bettered South Africa's chances of entering the WTC Final. As a result, South Africa have improved their PCT to 47.62% and have surpassed New Zealand in the WTC points table to acquire the fourth spot.

On Monday, July 8th, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies starting on August 7. Experienced batter Temba Bavuma will lead the South African cricket team.

South Africa’s red-ball coach, Shukri Conrad announced the squad for the Tests starting on August 7 in Trinidad. Bavuma will lead the team after missing a game against India earlier this year. Most of the main players, who skipped the New Zealand series due to SA20 commitments are back. Three players from the second string team that played against New Zealand are also retained.

David Bedingham, who is in great form in the County Championship keeps his spot. Pacers Dane Paterson and off-spinner Dane Piedt also stay in the team. Matthew Breetzke, who scored 322 runs at an average of 46 in the domestic competition, gets his first Test call up and may replace Dean Elgar as a backup batter. Tristan Stubbs also stays in the red-ball team.

Marco Jansen is rested to manage his workload, and with Anrich Nortje focusing on T20Is, Dane Paterson is retained as an extra fast bowler alongside Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger, and Gerald Coetzee.

“We have one new face, Matthew Breetzke, selected for his excellent performance last season. Resting Marco Jansen is to ensure his physical and mental well-being,” said Conrad in X.

The rest of the squad remains largely the same, with Ryan Rickelton returning as the second wicketkeeper, while Keegan Petersen is left out.
