England registered a convincing win by 137 runs over Bangladesh in the 7th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first. While Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root scored the fifties, it was Dawid Malan who stole the limelight with a stunning 140 off 107 with 16 fours and 5 sixes as well.

Mahedi Hasan picked up 4 wickets while conceding 71 runs as well. While chasing, Bangladesh lost 4 wickets quickly. However, Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim steadied the ship but that was not enough for them to win. And, they eventually lost by a massive margin as well.

Who said what after the match?

Jos Buttler: “Really good performance, stuck to our guns. Really important for us after a bad performance earlier. The back end I think we should have scored a few more, we could do well with some partnerships at the back end. It was fantastic to see Dawid Malan stand up and get a big hundred after what happened first game. We are always looking for the perfect performance, can’t remember the number of times it actually works out. One of the challenges is going to be reading the conditions and pitch well, we have a fantastic, balanced squad – a good combination of swing and spin. Today was fantastic to see Reece Topley come in and perform that way.”

Shakib Al Hasan: “It was a good toss to win, there was some rain last night. There was some help for the faster bowlers but we didn’t start well. When you give them a sniff, they will always come at us strong. We did well in the last 10 overs but it will always be tough to chase 350. We planned well, but we couldn’t execute. The ball was swinging nicely, needed to put in the right areas and build momentum. Once they got the momentum it was tough to contain them. I think the position they were in, they could have scored 380-390, we restricted them well. But I think 320 would have been a good total to chase here. It is a long tournament, we have a tough fixture coming up in Chennai, NZ are playing well. We have to move on, keep doing the right things and take it one game at a time.”

Dawid Malan, who won Player of the Match, said: “It’s nice to contribute, been a long journey to try and get to this stage, so to get here is fantastic and then to put in performance to win a game is great as well, I don’t know what it is down to to, hopefully it will continue (talking about his incredible form this year). Sometimes I play good shots and sometimes I play bad shots and that’s cricket (talking about the criticism), it’s always about trying to cash in against some type of bowling which is yours on the day. When you got Root at three who is so consistent, it allows us to play a bit freely. I’m desperate to do well this format, desperate to win games of cricket and prove a point and prove people wrong. So, when I get in, I don’t like to give it away.”

AUS vs ENG, 2nd T20I: England 178 for 7 (Malan 82, Moeen 44, Stoinis 3-34, Zampa 2-26) beat Australia 170 for 6 (Marsh 45, David 40, Curran 3-25) by eight runs

England won the T20I series by eight runs in Canberra, with Dawid Malan scoring a blistering 82 and Sam Curran once more maintaining his composure with the bat. England defeated a full-strength Australia to build momentum for the upcoming T20 World Cup after winning by the same margin in the series opener in Perth.

After the visitors were sent to bat on a seaming pitch in chilly conditions, Malan’s blistering 49-ball knock helped England dig themselves out of an early hole. Australia threatened to score 179 to win the series, but a composed Curran stopped them, and the defending T20 World Cup champions were constantly questioned about a bad batting order. The final episode of the series will air on Friday at the same location.

Malan was the casualty as England sought flexibility and promoted a slew of big-hitters up the order after Jos Buttler and Alex Hales’ record century opening stand in Perth.

This indicated that the graceful left-handed batter moved down to No.7 and only had to deal with two deaths. Malan, on the other hand, returned to his usual No. 1 position against a full-strength Australia attack under lights on a seaming Manuka Oval pitch. 3 slot and saved England’s 54-for-4 start.

Malan demonstrated once more that he is well-suited to the faster conditions of Australia by combining his signature beautiful cover drives with more aggressive strokes. Moeen Ali, who was saved early by a rare drop from Glenn Maxwell at the backward point, gave him a lot of support. With a quick partnership of 92 runs with Malan, he made Australia pay with 44 runs off 27 deliveries.

Malan put his foot down after Moeen left in the 17th over to lead England to a competitive total and show what might be in store for the 35-year-old at the T20 World Cup. Starc sat back, while Stoinis stole the show. Their star bowlers returned after missing the long trip to Perth, but Australia tinkered with spearhead Mitchell Starc, who did not open the T20I for the first time since 2014.

It appeared to be paying off, as all-rounder Marcus Stoinis continued his strong start to the series by removing Hales shortly after. In the fourth over, Pat Cummins took the major wicket of Buttler.

In the sixth over, Starc finally entered the attack, but Malan immediately launched a freewheeling counterattack. The left-armer and his fellow star quicks gave up runs, but Australia got strong help from Stoinis, who got three wickets for the first time in his T20I career, and Adam Zampa, a reliable leg spinner, slowed England down in the middle overs.

However, a sloppy fielding display resulted in several missed catches for them

After recently shifting away from his usual opening role, Aaron Finch returned to the top, but it failed to solve Australia’s batting problems, with the skipper being run out to mid-off for 13.

Maxwell, who had been rested for game one, had a golden chance to break out of a long slump when he entered the game at 22 for 2 after David Warner’s wicket.

However, Maxwell has scored only 16 runs in his last six T20I innings after failing to get going once more and being caught for just eight. The competition for spots is intense with Steve Smith in the wings after failing to make the lineup this series. Big men Mitchell Marsh and Tim David appeared to be in great shape, but they couldn’t keep Australia in the game long enough to win.

Curran does it again England’s attack appeared vulnerable without speedster Mark Wood, who ignited game one with rapid bowling and a three-wicket haul. This was made worse by Chris Jordan’s struggles on his return from injury.

Curran does it again

Curran was under a lot of pressure, and he delivered with the wickets of Maxwell and Stoinis in the middle of the innings. He maintained his composure when he returned in the 18th over to snag the crucial wicket of David, who was on the verge of flipping the match on its head, much like his clutch death bowling in Perth. The 24-year-old, who is getting ready for a big T20 World Cup, put on another strong performance.

<![CDATA[Dawid Malan relishing return to the heat of Ashes battle as England fightback]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/malan-relishing-return-to-the-heat-of-ashes/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/malan-relishing-return-to-the-heat-of-ashes/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 19:40:00 GMT

Dawid Malan helped Joe Root kickstart England’s Ashes campaign on day three in Brisbane and claimed nothing inspires him like Australian bowlers trying to “blow my head off”. England’s latest tour got off to a demoralizing start as they were rolled over for 147 on day one and then watched as Travis Head’s fine century allowed the hosts to reach 425 in response. But a crushing lead had been thinned out to just 58 on the third evening as Malan and Root turned the tide with an unbroken stand worth 159.

Both men will be eyeing centuries when they begin the fourth morning on 220 for two, with Malan six behind his captain on 80 not out. Malan is not in uncharted territory, having scored a fine century in Perth four years ago, but he was cut adrift after losing form and spent much of the intervening period believing his red-ball career was over. He earned his recall in the summer through his efforts in the limited-overs game but believes nothing compares to the intensity of a long-form battle against the old enemy. “I actually said to Rooty when were on 40 or 50 and the Barmy Army were singing, ‘I’ve really missed this,” he said.

“I’ve missed having someone trying to blow my head off all the time, the crowd going and the adrenaline going, playing against the best bowlers going around. Test cricket is the pinnacle. “To be able to stand out here in an England shirt … I’m so proud to do that. Especially to do it here at The Gabba in front of everyone. It’s just really good fun. “You can do as well as you want in Twenty20 or 50-over cricket, but you’re judged a lot by your Test career at the end of it. For us, an Ashes series is the biggest series of our calendar so to come here and get runs against this really good attack is very satisfying.”

Malan and Root put on an unbeaten partnership

Malan was quick to point out that there is plenty more hard work ahead if England is to turn one good session into something more meaningful. “The job isn’t done yet, just getting an 80 doesn’t mean you’ve made it, it’s about scoring the big hundred that will change the game,” he added. “They are so brilliant at closing that door on us. We need one more good 100-run partnership to put a score on the board and then who knows what can happen? To come in after a day and a half of hard fielding and do what we did here was fantastic, but that’s only half the job.”

Over the course of his classy knock Root surpassed Michael Vaughan’s record of 1,481 Test runs in a calendar year for England and, with two more matches before the end of 2022, he has plenty of time to up his total. He would probably trade that honor for another 14 runs on the fourth morning, as he looks to claim his maiden century on Australian soil in his 10th appearance. “Joe’s record obviously speaks for itself, with what he’s done in his career,” said Malan.

“Batting with him is great because he takes the pressure off you, always looks to score, and seems to find a way of putting the pressure back on the bowlers. It’s a great sign for us as a team that Joe is playing so well and leading from the front.” Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne was not inclined to wax lyrical about Root’s prolific year, preferring to focus on putting an end to his stay as soon as possible. “He batted really well and he’s obviously a beautiful player of spin and pace, but it’s not my job now to admire Joe Root’s innings,” he said.

“It’s my job to find holes in his game and help the team out. The Ashes are on the line and we have to keep putting pressure on him. If they keep batting well and scoring runs, we are going to need to go to plan A, B, and C.”

<![CDATA[England's Dawid Malan hails ‘absolute freak’ Jos Buttler as ‘inspiration’ to England T20 team]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/englands-malan-hail-freak-buttler-as-inspiration/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/englands-malan-hail-freak-buttler-as-inspiration/ Fri, 05 Nov 2021 12:41:30 GMT

Dawid Malan may be ranked second in the world Twenty20 batting rankings but even he is in awe when he watches England team-mate Jos Buttler in full flow. Malan’s 14-month stint atop the International Cricket Council standings in the format was ended as he was replaced by Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Wednesday, having averaged just 25.83 in 15 T20 matches this year. Whereas Malan has had a quiet start to the T20 World Cup, Buttler followed up an unbeaten 71 off 32 balls against Australia with 101 not out off 67 deliveries against Sri Lanka – remarkably his maiden T20 international century.

And while Malan himself is a proven match-winner for England and one of only six batters in history whose T20 international average is north of 40, he admitted he is envious of what Buttler can do at his devastating best. “Jos when he gets going is an absolute freak,” Malan said. “You don’t know where to bow to him. You bowl a full length and he hits for six, you bowl short and he hits you for six. He can scoop, he hits you all around the ground. “You need about 15 fielders when he’s playing as well as he does and some more over the ropes.

I sit there watching him and think ‘I wish I could do that. That’s how well he hits the ball and that’s how good he is. “It’s an inspiration to all of us to watch him keep getting better and keep improving. I think the one good thing about this England team is that everyone shares their knowledge with each other. “If there’s anything I want to know, I think he’s happy to share and take it to the nets and teach you some things that work for him, and it’s up to you whether it works for you or not. That’s why this England team keeps growing.”

England are all set to contest for the trophy

Malan had an inkling Buttler was in the groove after watching him in the nets during a pre-tournament training camp in Oman for those England players not involved in the conclusion of the Indian Premier League. “You could see he was hitting the ball differently,” Malan said. “When you watch someone batting in the nets, you just hear the way they are hitting and striking the ball and the clearness with which they are hitting the ball. “Everyone at this level hits the ball well and clean but there’s a different sound with Jos.

When I first joined the England squad, one of the things that everyone said was that when Jos range hits, everyone stops and watches – just because he hits the ball differently. “It was a little bit like that when, every time he batted, you watched and admired how cleanly he was hitting the ball and how loudly it sounded off the bat.” Buttler’s form has led England to the brink of the semi-finals and even defeat in their final Super 12s contest against South Africa in Sharjah on Saturday is unlikely to have too much of an impact due to their net run-rate.

That was given a boost in England’s first game in their hammering of the West Indies, where Malan was curiously shuffled down from number three in the order and ultimately went unused as the big-hitters took center stage. “As much as I’d love to have gone out and batted, putting the team first is probably the ethos of the team,” Malan said. “We got our run-rate up there which was good and we won the game and that’s all that matters. The conditions will be totally different, it’s going to be a different challenge,” Malan added. “But it does always give you confidence when you’ve done well against a team before.”

Jonny Bairstow Chris Woakes and Dawid Malan are set to join Jos Buttler among the high-profile England withdrawals when this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League resumes next week. A bulging winter schedule is on the horizon for the quartet, who have been selected in England’s provisional squad for the Twenty20 World Cup which begins next month in the United Arab Emirates while they are all in contention for Ashes berths.

Rajasthan Royals have already announced Buttler will be absent for the remainder of the IPL, which restarts on September 19 in the UAE after being suspended in May amid an exponential rise in Covid-19 cases in India. Fellow wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, seam-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes and Malan, the world’s number one ranked T20 batsman, are understood to have pulled out as well.

Bairstow is the leading run-scorer for Sunrisers Hyderabad but they sit bottom of the standings at the halfway point and seem unlikely to reach the knockout phases while Woakes and Malan have only had bit-part roles with Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings respectively. Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer are unavailable for the Royals but there could still be 10 English representatives on the show with 2019 50-over World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan heading the pack as he skippers Kolkata Knight Riders.

Jason Roy, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, Sam and Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings, and George Garton are also due to participate in the highly lucrative T20 competition. While all England players will fly commercial, Mumbai Indians announced captain Rohit Sharma, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and batsman Suryakumar Yadav arrived in Abu Dhabi on a private charter flight on Saturday morning. The trio could have been involved in India’s fifth and final Test against England at Emirates Old Trafford, which was dramatically called off on Friday, just a couple of hours before play on day one due to Covid-19 concerns in the tourists’ camp.

England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Tom Harrison was alarmed at suggestions the IPL had been prioritized over a prestigious Test match, rejecting the idea the fear of missing out on the T20 tournament had caused the disquiet among India’s squad. “Let me be super clear, I don’t think the IPL has anything to do with this,” he said on Friday afternoon. “This is not a situation which has been created by the rescheduled IPL, I fundamentally do not believe that for a second. This Indian cricket team is as passionate about Test cricket as fans in our country are.”

There will still be 10 England players who will take part in the IPL 2021.

Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings) and Sam Curran (CSK) are set to leave for Dubai soon and will be joined by Tom Curran (DC), George Garton (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Eoin Morgan (Kolkata Knight Riders), Chris Jordan (PBKS), Adil Rashid (PBKS), Liam Livingstone (RR), Sam Billings (DC) and Jason Roy (SRH).

IPL 2021 was initially postponed indefinitely after just 29 matches in May due to the second wave of Covid-19 in India. But the Indian cricket board (BCCI) was able to find out a window to slot in the remaining 31 games to complete the season and thus, decided to take the tournament to the UAE where it will be played from September 19 to October 15 in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Oman.

“All members had returned negative RT PCR results before departure. A new RT PCR test was undertaken upon arrival at Abu Dhabi, which came out negative as well.” Malan, meanwhile, has been included in Yorkshire’s squad for their upcoming County Championship clash with Warwickshire which is due to start on Sunday.

Skipper Joe Root frustrated the Indian bowlers with yet another century, his 23rd in Tests, but was soon dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in the final session on the second day of the third Test at Headingley in Leeds. England lost wickets in quick succession in the final hour as India fought back strongly with the hosts placed at 423/8 after 129 overs with a lead of 345 runs at Stump’s.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj struck gold as he removed Dawid Malan right on the stroke of Tea. India got the much-needed breakthroughs of openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed as pacer Shami and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja went through the defenses of the English batsmen. Both Hameed and Burns looked solid at the start of the second day’s play but the latter was castled by a Shami delivery that came in. England dominated the first day at Headingley as India was bundled out for 78 in their first innings on Wednesday.

England captain Joe Root completed his 23rd Test ton as the hosts gained full command against India on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test here at Headingley, Leeds on Thursday. At stumps, England’s score read 423/8– a lead of 345 runs with two wickets in hand. For the Three Lions, Craig Overton (24*) and Ollie Robinson (0*) are at the crease.

Resuming the final session at 298/3, Jonny Bairstow started scoring runs at a brisk pace and Root carried on with his momentum. In the 104th over of the innings, the England captain brought up his 23rd century in the longest format and the hosts were looking in absolute control. Bairstow’s (29) cameo came to an end in the 108th over as Mohammed Shami sent him back to the pavilion, reducing England to 350/4.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler (7) failed to leave a mark with the bat as he was dismissed by Shami and this brought Moeen Ali to the middle. Jasprit Bumrah finally got the better of Root in the 118th over but it was not before the English captain had scored 121 runs. Moeen Ali (8) did not last for long as he handed a simple catch to substitute fielder Axar Patel at mid-on off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja and England was reduced to 383/7. Sam Curran also departed after playing a knock of 15, but, in the end, Craig Overton and Ollie Robinson ensured that hosts do not lose any more wickets before the close of play.

Malan impressive knock against India shows his comeback.

Earlier, Root and Dawid Malan were in firm control as England piled further pressure on India in the second session. Resuming at 182/2, Root and Malan carried on from where they left off and both batsmen scored runs at a brisk pace. Root made the most of his form and he brought up his half-century off just 57 balls in the 82nd over of the innings.

Malan followed his skipper as he also brought up his half-century in the 86th over of the innings and England maintained its firm grip in the match. Malan and Root did not relent and they continued to pile on the pressure, ensuring England’s lead goes past 200 and the hosts sit at the box seat from where they are able to control the game. However, on the final ball of the second session, Malan (70) got strangled down the leg-side and he lost his wicket to Mohammed Siraj.

Earlier, India might have picked the wickets of England openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed on the second morning but the hosts remained miles ahead in the game thanks to a splendid bowling effort from James Anderson and boys on the first day. Resuming at 120/0, Burns and Hameed added 15 more runs to the total before Mohammed Shami sent Burns (61) back to the pavilion, bringing Dawid Malan to the crease.

While Malan did hit boundaries, Hameed found it tough in the middle and the Indians were able to dry the runs up considerably. Both batsmen put together 24 runs for the second wicket, but the stand came to an end on the final ball of the 63rd over as Ravindra Jadeja bowled Hameed (68), reducing England to 159/2. Skipper Root along with Malan ensured that England did not suffer more hiccups and the hosts entered the interval with eight wickets in hand.

On an opening day, India was bowled out for 78 as no batsman was able to stay at the crease for a long haul. For England, James Anderson and Craig Overton returned with three wickets each.

<![CDATA[England has a '50-50 call' over whether to pick Saqib Mahmood or Craig Overton: Michael Atherton.]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/atherton-england-50-50-call-over-mahmood-overton/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/atherton-england-50-50-call-over-mahmood-overton/ Tue, 24 Aug 2021 17:40:39 GMT

Michael Atherton believes England faces a “50-50 call” between Saqib Mahmood and Craig Overton for the final spot in the bowling attack in the third Test against India. Mark Wood’s shoulder injury has ruled him out of the game which starts at Emerald Headingley on Wednesday, with Lancashire quick Mahmood and Somerset seamer Overton seemingly vying to replace him as England look to level the five-match series at 1-1 after losing the second Test at Lord’s.

England headed into the fifth day at Lord’s as favorites to take a 1-0 lead in the series but was then rocked by an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 89 between India tailenders Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah before they were skittled in 51.5 overs having been set 272 to win in 60 overs.

“For some time England has been building up these pace reserves and at one point you had Jofra Archer, Olly Stone, and Wood. “Now you have none of those, although it looks like Wood’s injury is not too serious so let’s hope he is back for the fourth Test at The Kia Oval from September 2.” England has tinkered with a batting line-up rolled for 120 on the final day of the second Test, with the recalled Dawid Malan to bat at No 3 and Haseeb Hameed to open alongside Rory Burns following the dropping of Dom Sibley in both innings.

Middle order can be stablize by Malan and bowling unit by Mahmood for england: Atherton

Malan, 33, scored 724 runs in 15 Tests between July 2017 and August 2018, including an Ashes century in Perth, at an average just below 28. The left-hander has played just one first-class inning so far this season – but that was a score of 199 for Yorkshire against Sussex at Headingley.

Former England captain Atherton said: “I think they may go Overton but I think I would probably go Mahmood. “Overton offers a bit with the bat and is a good slip fielder while Mahmood looked good in that one-day series to win over Pakistan so it’s kind of a 50-50 call. “You could also pick Mahmood and then have the choice between Sam Curran and Overton as all-rounders. Michael Atherton would pick Saqib Mahmood for the third Test against India after seamer impressed in ODI series win over Pakistan; former England captain says Dawid Malan’s recall is “sensible” and gives hosts experience

Atherton said. “I think Malan is a sensible pick. He is a pretty experienced guy who knows his game. “He has had moderate success in his 15 Tests but has scored a Test hundred in Australia, which marks you out as a pretty decent player. “He is a tough nut and I think [captain Joe] Root just wants someone who is a bit more experienced. “It would have been difficult to pluck a young kid out of the county game given we have had no first-class cricket for the last six weeks or so.”

Atherton says that result will “bruise” England and that the continued absence of some key players has weakened their side – but believes they can still battle back in the series. “England were bruised after Lord’s but if you look back at the two games we have had so far, they have been very competitive,” said the Cricketing expert.

“Who knows which way the first Test would have gone if not for the rain and for long periods of the Lord’s Test they were in control. They will have some confidence but it will take some coming back from after that heavy defeat “They are missing Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Archer, Wood, Stuart Broad – all guys that are first-choice or there and thereabouts so it’s a weakened England side
