The Indian Premier League 2025 mega-auction in Jeddah has been nothing short of a sensational two days of intensive hammer sessions, with teams spending massive sums on a plethora of star cricketers. Despite the flash and expenditure of significant money, some other teams conducted their business very sensibly.

A few big-name stars went for a lower price than fans may have expected. Some franchises made good timing decisions and were fortunate to obtain away match-winners at a lower cost than expected. Having said that, here are the top five steal deals from the recent 2025 IPL Mega Auction.

Glenn Maxwell- INR 4.2 Crores (Punjab Kings)

Mighty Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell got a new side in the form of a homecoming with the Punjab Kings (played from 2014 to 2017 and 2020), obtaining a deal for INR 4.20 crore. The 36-year-old was released after three seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and instantly became a target for several teams.

Sunrisers Hyderabad started the bidding battle, followed by Chennai Super Kings until Punjab Kings won the sale at a lower price. PBKS took advantage of an excellent chance to boost its presence abroad for the next season. Maxwell's IPL career encompasses 134 matches and includes 2,771 runs at a strike rate of 156.73 and 37 wickets.

Sam Curran- INR 2.40 Crores (Chennai Super Kings)

Sam Curran is back in yellow; this time, he's a bargain at INR 2.4 crore. Curran's bowling at the death and ability to swing the new ball make him a valuable asset. Add to that his development as a pinch hitter capable of batting higher up the order, and you have the ideal all-rounder.

His flexibility bridges weaknesses in both the batting and bowling areas. Curran's return seems like a masterstroke, whether he's partnering Matheesha Pathirana in slog overs or adding depth to the batting lineup. In 59 IPL appearances for Chennai Super and Punjab Kings, he scored 883 runs and took 58 wickets.

Adam Zampa- INR 2.4 Crores (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Sunrisers Hyderabad made one of the finest moves of the IPL 2025 auction, signing Australian spinner Adam Zampa for only INR 2.40 crore, which helps fill their spinmeister's void. Following a brief bidding battle with the Rajasthan Royals, the seasoned leg-spinner was unexpectedly bought for nearly his introductory price of INR 2 crore.

His IPL career, which began with Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016, has seen noteworthy performances, including a spectacular 6/19 against his current side, SRH. As his history from spells at RCB and RR suggests, Zampa's arrival at this price range might be the season's best bargain. In his 14-match IPL career, he has 21 wickets at 7.74.

Quinton de Kock- INR 3.6 Crores (Kolkata Knight Riders)

The defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, pulled off a masterstroke by signing South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock for only INR 3.60 crore. After the Lucknow Super Giants declined to use their Right to Match (RTM) card, KKR took the chance to improve their team. His probable connection with Sunil Narine at the top of the order will help the team get off to a solid start. 

With his recent international and franchised-based league performances, De Kock can give a vital, robust start to the team's batting. De Kock provides experience, having played 107 IPL matches and scored 3,157 runs, including 23 half-centuries and two centuries.  

Washington Sundar- INR 3.2 Crores (Gujarat Titans)

Washington Sundar was among the most remarkable Indian all-rounders at the auction, and many expected him to sell for a high price. However, he eventually signed with the Gujarat Titans for INR 3.20 crores. GT defeated Lucknow Super Giants in a bidding battle to gain his contract. 

He is a wily off-spinner who has recently been in excellent form. Sundar has played 60 IPL matches and taken 37 wickets at an economy rate of 7.54. He has also scored 378 runs with a strike rate of more than 116, which might help the Titans' lower middle-order batting lineup.

While the 36-year-old Glenn Maxwell is desperate to make a comeback in Test cricket, his hope has been facing another barrier as his injury has forced him to stay on the sideline from the crucial upcoming first-class matches. 

The cricket world knows Glenn Maxwell very well in the limited-overs formats. In both ODI and T20I formats, Maxwell has set his image in the special frames, which is hard to replace in the future. Last month, Maxwell talked about his dream of Test cricket. He told ESPNcricinfo, "I think if I gave up on that Test dream now, I don't think I'd be doing justice to that younger Glenn Maxwell who was dying to put on the baggy green when he was a kid. And I think while there's still a glimmer of hope, I'll keep going for it."

Maxwell's latest injury

However, Maxwell’s Test return has become tougher after the latest hamstring injury. During the last T20I against Pakistan at Hobart, while Australia completed a 3-0 home series win, Maxwell sustained a hamstring injury. Later, it was diagnosed with a grade two hamstring injury. 

After the first Test and before the second Test of the five-match Test series against the visitors India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Prime Minister’s XI will play a two-day pink-ball match against India at Canberra. Maxwell was reportedly expected to be selected for that game, which would be marked as his first-class cricket return after more than a year.

Meanwhile, Maxwell was also expected to be available for the next Sheffield Shield match against Queensland at Melbourne, starting on December 6.

Recently, in a video shared by ESPNcricinfo, Maxwell revealed that the Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah would be the best bowler he faced. The Aussie cricketer believes that Bumrah can be the best all-format bowler of all time. 

Maxwell said, “I think the best bowler I would have faced would probably be Bumrah. I think he’s probably going to go down as the best all-format bowler of all time. His release point, because he releases it from so far out in front of himself, almost feels like he can change where he’s bowling right at the last moment.

“Unbelievable slow ball, great yorker, has the ability to swing it both ways; he’s got a brilliant wrist, and he’s got a good sniff. It feels like he’s got all the tricks of a really good fast bowler.”

Maxwell's performances against Bumrah

While Maxwell has the dominating strike rates in the ODIs and T20 cricket, his record against Bumrah isn’t the same. Maxwell’s ODI strike rate against Bumrah is 101.4, where the right-handed batter has scored 70 runs off 69 balls and has been dismissed twice. 

In the T20 format, Bumrah dismissed Maxwell seven times, including twice in the T20 international. The right-handed batter has scored 75 runs off 65 balls in T20 cricket with a strike rate of 115.4.

In his entire career, Maxwell has hit only two sixes against Bumrah, once in an ODI and the other one in a T20I match.

Maxwell, who captained PBKS during the 2017 season, detailed how Sehwag maintained significant control over team selection, sidelining input from the coaching staff. Despite a consensus to involve all coaches in a WhatsApp group for team decisions, Sehwag ignored suggestions and asserted his authority to pick the playing XI unilaterally. This approach, according to Maxwell, contributed to the team’s underwhelming performance that season.

In his book, Maxwell explained, “We thought it might be beneficial to include the coaching staff in a WhatsApp group for team decisions. Everyone was on board, except for Sehwag. In the end, he was the one calling the shots on the starting XI, and this affected the morale both on and off the field.”

Public fallout after loss to rising Pune Super Giants

Maxwell also recounted the aftermath of PBKS’s final game of the season against Rising Pune Super Giants, which they lost by nine wickets. Following the match, Maxwell volunteered to face the media, but Sehwag chose to go instead, using the opportunity to criticize Maxwell publicly, calling him a “big disappointment” and blaming him for failing to take responsibility as captain. Maxwell was surprised by this, especially when he found out that he had been removed from the team’s WhatsApp group soon after the game.

The former PBKS captain also mentioned his private response to Sehwag’s remarks: “I texted him saying how much it hurt to hear those comments. I told him he’d lost a fan in me. He responded, saying he didn’t need a fan like me. That was the last we spoke.”

Maxwell eventually left PBKS and played for other franchises, including Delhi Capitals in 2018 and later rejoining PBKS in 2020. Since 2021, he has been a part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with his future in the franchise still under consideration.

Veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has said that he asked the RCB team management to drop him from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against SRH on Monday, April 15 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, they made a few changes to their playing XI and also named Will Jacks, Lockie Ferguson and Reece Topley as their overseas players along with the captain Faf du Plessis.

However, Glenn Maxwell was going through a poor run of form as he could manage only 32 runs from 6 matches at an average of 5.33 and a strike rate of 94.11 as well. The hard-hitting batter scored double digits only once with a top score of 28 and picked up 3 ducks in the ongoing edition of the T20 league.

He also admitted that it was high time that RCB tried a different option in the middle order. Maxwell also said that he needed a mental and physical break from the game and did not want to repeat mistakes from the past and get himself more into trouble as well.

“For me, personally, it was a pretty easy decision. I went to Faf [du Plessis] and the coaches after the last game and said I felt it was probably time we tried someone else. I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole,” Glenn Maxwell said in the post-match press conference.

“I think now is actually a good time for me to give myself a bit of a mental and physical break, get my body right. If I’m required to get in during the tournament, I can hopefully get back into a really solid mental and physical space where I can still have an impact,” Maxwell again said.

“We have had a pretty big deficiency straight after the powerplay, which has been my area of strength over the last couple of seasons. I felt like I wasn’t contributing in a positive way with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it’s a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own,” Maxwell concluded.

However, the changes RCB made in the match against SRH did not help them as they lost the match by 25 runs at home. After being asked to chase down a huge total of 288, RCB finished at 262 for 7 in 20 overs as well. Losing 6 out of 7 matches, RCB are at the bottom of the points table with 2 points and a net run rate of -1.185 as well.

According to a report from News 24, Glenn Maxwell suffered an injury to his right thumb while fielding during the match against Mumbai Indians. The veteran all-rounder has been going through a rough patch in the current season, managing to score only 32 runs in six innings so far, with three of those resulting in ducks as well. Unfortunately, his third duck came during the match against MI.
