IPL 2025 Auction: New Look Teams After Mega Auction in Jeddah

The player-auction for the IPL 2025, which took place in November. It happened over two days in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where 182 players found new teams for a hefty total of Rs 639.15 crore. First, the 10 teams made sure to hold onto their important players then, they had the sincere intention to strengthen drastically their lineups by adding a combo of seasoned professionals and fresh, exciting rookies. This event brought significant changes to how the teams look.

Auction Highlights and Key Players

The main key news at the auction was Rishabh Pant setting a new record by being sold for a very high price of Rs 27 crore, making him the priciest player the IPL has ever seen. Right behind him, Shreyas Iyer went for Rs 26.75 crore, and Venkatesh Iyer wasn't far off with a sale at Rs 23.75 crore. Mostly, the bidding war was apparently concentrated on two main groups of players, and a portion of the largest names in the industry ended up getting very large offers.

Teams moved forward fighting for the best cricketers during the auction. Several new players joined the IPL now, making the auction unfathomably intense and memorable. Many teams spent a lot of money, even going above their budget, to acquire major-name players, including some who had a good run with the teams they played for before.

But the auction had some unexpected moments too. Major names such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, and Shardul Thakur didn't attract any offers, surprising everyone. This made the auction even more unpredictable and exciting.

While Gujarat Titans (GT) made their IPL debut in the 2022 edition, they won it in the first edition (2022). In the next edition, they ended as the runners-up after losing the final against Chennai Super Kings. In the last edition, GT played under new leadership and finished in eighth place in the points table.

Gujarat Titans spent INR 51 crore to retain five key players and released the remaining players. So, it meant that the IPL 2022 champions started the IPL 2025 mega auction with the purse remaining of INR 69 crore.

Gujarat Titans: Key additions from the mega auction

Gujarat Titans fought hard to secure English star Jos Buttler for INR 15.75 crore. They also showed their desperation to buy Indian star pacer Mohammed Siraj and South African star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for INR 12.25 crore and 10.75 crore, respectively. Prasidh Krishna also joined for INR 9.50 crore, while they bought Sherfane Rutherford, Glenn Phillips, and Gerald Coetzee for bargain prices.

Brief SWOT analysis

After retaining their consistent performers, the Gujarat Titans have made their batting and pace-bowling line-ups stronger. The franchise has strong all-rounders, both Indians and overseas. Due to the strong all-rounders, GT have strengthened their spin bowling options too. So, we can confidently say that Titans will be an interesting team for the IPL 2025.

Talking about their rare weakness, it can be seen only if some of their key players fail to perform consistently. In their pace-bowling squad, there are some good names who sometimes struggled to perform consistently in the IPL.

As their first two seasons’ successful captain, Hardik Pandya, was traded out to Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill became the new GT captain for the IPL 2024. However, the last IPL season wasn’t good enough for them as they finished in the eighth position in the points table.

CVC Capital Partners are planning to sell most of their stake in the Gujarat Titans IPL team, valued at around 1-1.5 billion US dollars.

According to The Economic Times, the Luxembourg-based private equity firm is in talks with the Adani Group and Torrent Group about selling a majority of its stake in the Titans.

CVC Capital to Sell Majority Stake in Gujarat Titans

However, CVC Capital Partners will still keep a minority interest after the sale. CVC Capital Partners bought the Gujarat Titans for Rs. 5625 Crores in 2021, a year before the team made its first appearance in the Indian Premier League. There was a four-year lock-in period on the ownership, which is ending soon.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India doesn’t allow franchises to sell their stake before the lock-in period ends. With the lock-in period expiring in February next year, CVC Capital Partners are planning to leave their ownership of the Titans, who won the title in their first attempt.

Both Adani Group and Torrent Group initially showed interest in the franchise, bidding Rs 5,100 crore and 4,653 crore, respectively.

Gujarat Titans: Performance Over the Years

The Gujarat Titans have been very successful in the IPL, reaching the finals twice and winning once in three years. After Hardik Pandya left the franchise for a lucrative 15 Cr deal with Mumbai Indians, GT named young batter Shubman Gill as his successor. However, Shubman Gill had a tough start to his leadership, with the Titans finishing eighth in the ten-team standings.

The all-important match between SunRisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans (SRH vs GT) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in the ongoing IPL 2024 has been abandoned due to rain (no toss).

SRH qualified for the playoff

With the match being abandoned, SRH qualified for the playoffs, but this washed out their hopes of a top-two finish as well. While they need to beat Punjab on Sunday, Rajasthan also need to lose their final group game as well. For Gujarat Titans, the win won’t change their fate as well as they are already knocked out of the playoff race. Now either Chennai Super Kings or Royal Challengers Bengaluru will qualify for the final 4, depending on the last few league matches as well.

However, GT had a poor show in this season. They have managed five wins and seven losses so far. Ahead of this game, Shubman Gill, the Gujarat Titans captain opened up on the team’s early exit in IPL 2024. The absence of key players, losing close matches and a below-par fielding performance in the season are a few reasons for their poor shows as well.

Gujarat Titans didn’t have a great season in IPL 2024

While Hardik Pandya moved to Mumbai Indians, Mohammed Shami was forced to miss the tournament due to an injury as well. Moreover, Rashid Khan just returned from an injury and wasn’t at his best of form. David Miller and Wriddhiman Saha also struggled with niggles as well.

“We’ve been a bit up and down this season. It’s important in a big season like this to be balanced as a team and as a performing unit, which we were not able to do this season,” said Gill. “It’s never easy. Some of our key players got injured before the season and in the season as well we have had some injuries. It’s never easy when you have had injuries in between and our team was such we had to completely change our team combination in between, because of some players getting injured. And then it’s not easy for some players coming in to be able to perform straightaway.”

“Apart from that I think it’s just a matter of one match… one match here and there. The match that we lost against Delhi by one run. A match like that could go either way, which I think in the first couple of years a lot of our matches like that went in our favour. At the end of the day, winning and losing, the margin is so close it’s hard to identify or pinpoint a moment or a particular area. But I think collectively as a fielding unit we let ourselves down in some of the key moments,” Shubman Gill concluded.

As we approach the critical phase of the group stage in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), the competition for playoff berths intensifies. On May 13 (Monday), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) are set to clash in a particularly intriguing encounter. Despite being on the brink of elimination, GT still hold a slim hope, albeit fading, while KKR looks to solidify their position in the top two.

The outcome of this match could potentially accelerate GT’s exit from the tournament while further securing KKR’s playoff berth. For KKR, who are on the verge of securing a top-two spot, a victory over GT could be the final push towards playoff certainty. Conversely, GT’s hopes of staying alive in the competition hinge on a victory, making this encounter a pivotal moment for both teams.

Will GT make the tough decision to drop Noor Ahmad?

In IPL 2023, Noor Ahmad emerged as a potent force in Gujarat Titans’ bowling arsenal, adding a vital dimension to their attack, especially during the middle overs. However, in the current season, the young spinner seems to be grappling with the challenges of the infamous second-season syndrome. With just eight wickets in 10 matches at an average of 36.25 and an economy rate of 8.33, his impact has noticeably dwindled.

Recent performances reflect a struggle, as he has conceded nearly 10 runs per over across his last four games, with an average of 42.3 during this period. A glaring example was against CSK, where he managed only two overs and was pummeled by Moeen Ali, leaking 25 runs, with 20 coming in a single over.

It comes as little surprise that Moeen capitalized on Noor’s struggles, particularly against left-handed batters, evident from his high economy rate of 13.2 in GT’s recent encounters. Considering KKR’s formidable lineup boasting four potent left-handers in Narine, Venky Iyer, Rana, and Rinku, GT might contemplate dropping Noor. Instead, they could consider bringing in a more effective option like Spencer Johnson or Josh Little, the latter having showcased his prowess with a four-wicket haul in a previous clash against RCB.

While KKR’s batting unit has been performing exceptionally well this season, their skipper, Shreyas Iyer, has struggled to find his rhythm. With an average of 31.89 and a strike rate of 135.4, he has found it challenging to consistently influence matches like some of his teammates. In the recent encounter against MI on May 11 (Saturday), he endured a difficult innings, scoring just 7 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed in a rather amusing manner, bowled behind his legs.

Iyer has indeed displayed glimpses of his potential this season, albeit inconsistently. While his fluctuating form hasn’t significantly impacted the team due to the stellar performances of his teammates, as the playoffs draw closer, KKR will rely on their skipper to step up. With Monday’s crucial clash on the horizon, it remains to be seen if Iyer can rise to the occasion and deliver a performance that could potentially reignite his form and lead KKR to victory.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a cricketing extravaganza and a platform where legendary cricketers showcase their skills. However, as time passes, cricketers inevitably face the prospect of bidding farewell to the field. The ongoing IPL tournament could be the last season of their career. In such a situation, if we talk about those 5 legendary players whose IPL 2024 could be the last IPL season, then their names are as follows-

1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (CSK)

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as ‘Captain Cool,’ has been a stalwart of Indian cricket and the IPL. However, at 42, Dhoni’s physical fitness has become a concern, exacerbated by recurring orthopedic issues. With speculation rife about his retirement, IPL 2024 could be the swansong for the former Chennai Super Kings captain. Under his leadership, CSK achieved enormous success in this league. CSK won the IPL title five times under his leadership. At the start of the season, Dhoni passed the baton of CSK leadership role to young batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.

MS Dhoni entered the IPL fray in 2008, embarking on a journey that would cement his legacy as one of the greatest players in the tournament’s history. Over the years, Dhoni has graced the IPL stage with his exceptional batting prowess in 262 matches, amassing a staggering total of 5,218 runs.

With a remarkable batting average of 39.23, Dhoni has been a linchpin for his teams, often delivering match-winning performances. Among his many achievements in the IPL, Dhoni has registered an impressive tally of 24 half-centuries, with his highest individual score at an unbeaten 84 runs.

Dhoni’s ability to find the boundaries is evident from his impressive count of 360 fours and 251 sixes throughout his IPL career. His penchant for finishing matches in style has endeared him to cricket fans worldwide, earning him the moniker of ‘Captain Cool.’

2. Amit Mishra (LSG)

Amit Mishra, the seasoned leg-spinner representing Lucknow Super Giants, finds himself in a similar predicament as Dhoni. At 41 years old, Mishra’s playing opportunities and fitness concerns have dwindled. It’s unlikely that Mishra will feature prominently in future IPL seasons, making IPL 2024 a possible curtain call for the leg-spin maestro.

Amit Mishra made his IPL debut in 2008 and has been a prominent figure in the tournament. Throughout his 162-match career, Mishra has showcased his bowling prowess by claiming 174 wickets. With an impressive average of 23.84, Mishra has proven to be a formidable force in the IPL bowling lineup. He has maintained an economy rate of approximately 7.38 runs per over, demonstrating his ability to consistently contain batters while taking wickets.

Mishra’s best individual bowling performance in the IPL came with figures of 5/17, highlighting his match-winning capabilities with the ball. In the IPL Auction 2024, the Lucknow franchise secured Mishra’s services for Rs 50.00 Lac, recognizing his value as a seasoned spinner.

3. Wriddhiman Saha (GT)

Gujarat Titans wicket keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has had a distinguished career in Indian cricket. However, at 39 years old and with retirement from international cricket behind him, Saha’s IPL prospects seem bleak. His absence from domestic cricket further diminishes the likelihood of seeing him in the IPL beyond 2024.

Wriddhiman Saha entered the IPL arena in 2008, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey in the tournament. Throughout his IPL career, which spans 170 matches, Saha has consistently performed with the bat, amassing 2,934 runs. His batting average is a respectable 24.25, reflecting his ability to contribute consistently to his team’s success.

Saha’s IPL portfolio boasts one century and 13 half-centuries, with his highest individual score being an unbeaten 115 runs. His knack for scoring boundaries is evident from the impressive tally of 296 fours and 87 sixes that he has accumulated over the years.

In the IPL Auction 2024, the Gujarat franchise secured Saha’s services for Rs 1.90 Cr, recognizing his worth as a reliable wicketkeeper-batsman.

4. Dinesh Karthik (RCB)

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s dependable wicketkeeper-batsman, Dinesh Karthik, may appear fit on the field, but at 38, age catches up with even the most seasoned players. As he approaches 40, Karthik’s future in the IPL remains uncertain, with teams possibly preferring younger talent over experienced campaigners.

Dinesh Karthik stepped into the IPL arena in 2008, marking the beginning of a prolific career in the tournament. Over the years, Karthik has showcased his batting prowess in 254 IPL matches, accumulating 4,817 runs. With an impressive batting average of 26.61, Karthik has established himself as a dependable middle-order batsman in the IPL circuit.

Throughout his IPL journey, Karthik has notched up an impressive tally of 22 half-centuries, with his highest individual score standing at an unbeaten 97 runs. His ability to find boundaries is evident from the 464 fours and 160 sixes he registered in his IPL career.

5. Ishant Sharma (DC)

Delhi Capitals’ experienced fast bowler, Ishant Sharma, faces the dual challenge of age and fitness concerns. At 35, Sharma’s pace bowling prowess may be on the wane, compounded by potential fitness issues. With the demands of T20 cricket and younger talents emerging, IPL 2024 could mark the end of Sharma’s IPL journey.

Ishant Sharma entered the IPL arena in 2008, marking the commencement of his journey in the tournament. Over the years, Sharma has participated in 108 IPL matches, showcasing his bowling prowess on various occasions. With 89 wickets to his name, Sharma has proven to be a valuable asset for his teams in the IPL.

Sharma’s bowling statistics include an average of 34.93, with an economy rate of approximately 8.21 runs per over. His best individual bowling figures stand at an impressive 5/12, reflecting his ability to deliver match-winning performances when called upon.
