In a riveting contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Gujarat and UP locked horns in a battle of nerves. The match unfolded into a thrilling spectacle as both teams fought tooth and nail for supremacy. Gujarat exhibited admirable composure and determination, holding their nerve in the face of mounting pressure to secure a hard-earned victory by the slimmest of margins, just 8 runs separating the two sides at the end of the pulsating encounter.

As the game reached its climax, Deepti Sharma emerged as a pivotal figure for UP, teaming up with Poonam Khemnar to weather the storm and orchestrate a late charge towards the target. Their partnership infused hope and injected momentum into UP’s innings, as they skillfully maneuvered singles and capitalized on scoring opportunities in the crucial final overs.

Despite their valiant efforts and Deepti Sharma’s heroic unbeaten knock of 88 runs, UP ultimately fell agonizingly short of their target. The narrow defeat dealt a blow to their aspirations, leaving their chances of qualifying for the next stage hanging by a thread. Nonetheless, their spirited performance and fighting spirit served as a testament to their resilience and determination on the field.

Deepti Shines: Gujarat Giants Hold On to Stay Alive

In the initial phase of the game, Gujarat’s opening pair exhibited aggressive intent, taking advantage of UP’s field placements and finding boundaries with ease. Their partnership laid a strong foundation for a competitive total. However, the momentum shifted when Laura Wolvaardt was dismissed, leading to a series of wickets around Beth Mooney, which slowed down the scoring rate significantly.

During the middle overs, Sophie Ecclestone emerged as a key figure for UP, applying pressure with her accurate bowling and stemming the flow of runs. The game took a dramatic turn in the final over as Beth Mooney launched a fierce assault on Sophie Ecclestone, scoring five boundaries and boosting Gujarat’s total to 152 runs while remaining unbeaten on 74 runs. Despite the late onslaught, Sophie Ecclestone stood out for UP with impressive figures of 3 for 38 in her four overs, showcasing her bowling prowess and resilience under pressure.

UP’s innings got off to a disappointing start when their captain, Alyssa Healy, was dismissed early with just 4 runs on the board. The following dismissals of the next two batters, who fell victim to ambitious shots, deepened the team’s troubles. Grace Harris’s departure a few overs later further exacerbated their challenges. Despite the adversity, Deepti Sharma remained resolute, displaying her exceptional form with a series of powerful strokes that momentarily eased the growing pressure on the team.

UP’s skipper, Alyssa Healy, expressed her disappointment with the overall team performance despite Deepti Sharma’s valiant effort. She mentioned that they aimed to take the game deep, but their strategy to take on the bowlers in the powerplay didn’t yield the desired results. Healy emphasized the importance of securing a victory in this crucial match and acknowledged that their loss has left their fate uncertain in the competition. However, she remained hopeful and highlighted the team’s resilience, praising players like Poonam Khemnar for their contributions.

Beth Mooney, serving as both captain and opener for the Gujarat Giants (GG) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, exhibited remarkable leadership by guiding her team to a competitive total of 152 for 8 after choosing to bat first against the UP Warriorz (UPW). Throughout the innings, Mooney’s steadfastness in the face of challenges was evident, establishing her as a pivotal figure for her team.

Although Beth Mooney’s fifty runs didn’t come swiftly, her innings highlighted her determination as she achieved her third consecutive score of 50 or more, accumulating 74 runs off 52 deliveries, which included 10 boundaries and a maximum. Despite Sophie Ecclestone’s early dominance with three wickets for just 17 runs in her initial three overs, Mooney responded assertively by taking on the spinner herself, amassing 21 runs in the final over.

Shabnam Shakil’s Bowling Brilliance Restricts UP Warriorz in WPL Clash

The UP Warriorz exhibited resilience in their response to GG’s total, particularly led by Laura Wolvaardt’s 43 runs. However, GG experienced UPW’s resurgence as they first took 3 wickets for 13 runs and then further exploited with 4 wickets for 18 runs in the latter stages of the innings.

Initially, Gujarat Giants’ total of 152 seemed modest, but Beth Mooney’s late flourish bolstered their score, making it a more challenging target for UP Warriorz to chase down.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s stellar performance led Mumbai to a remarkable victory, showcasing her exceptional batting prowess. Despite a rocky start, Mumbai’s aggressive approach during the powerplay set the tone for their chase, scoring 50 runs. However, the loss of key wickets in the middle phase threatened their pursuit of a challenging target.

Nevertheless, Harmanpreet Kaur’s arrival on the crease marked a decisive turning point as she unleashed a breathtaking assault on the Gujarat bowlers. Displaying masterful strokeplay, she dominated the proceedings, effortlessly finding the boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Her sensational knock of 95 runs off just 48 deliveries single-handedly guided Mumbai to victory, with valuable contributions from Yastika Bhatia, Amelia Kerr, and Hayley Matthews adding to the team’s total.

In the first innings, Gujarat posted an imposing total of 190 runs in their allotted 20 overs, propelled by a formidable partnership between Beth Mooney and Dayalan Hemalatha, who amassed 121 runs for the second wicket. Hemalatha’s elegant strokeplay yielded 74 runs, complemented by Mooney’s robust 66-run contribution. Bharti Fulmali’s quickfire cameo of 21 runs further bolstered Gujarat’s total. Laura Wolvaardt showcased a masterful innings, scoring a fluent 76 off 45 balls with precision in her shot selection, accumulating 13 fours without resorting to aggressive strokes. Beth Mooney complemented Wolvaardt’s innings by ensuring swift runs between the wickets, allowing Wolvaardt to dominate against the quicks. Mooney, known for her consistency, tactically paced her innings, turning a 21-ball 32 into a composed 82 off 51 balls, showcasing her proficiency in scoring against spinners.

In contrast, Smriti Mandhana’s team experienced a challenging day as none of their batters managed to convert starts into substantial innings. This inability to build significant partnerships allowed the Gujarat Giants to assert control by consistently taking wickets. Despite a late onslaught from Georgia Wareham, who scored a rapid 48 off 22 balls, the valiant effort proved futile in preventing a comprehensive defeat for Smriti Mandhana’s side.

Gujarat Giants and RCB Women go head to head in match 13 of WPL 2024 in New Delhi on March 6. The match starts at 7.30 pm IST and this is the first game for both sides in the Delhi leg of the tournament.

RCB defeated the Giants by 8 wickets in their previous meeting in Bengaluru. The hosts chased down a paltry total of 108 inside 13 overs. Smriti Mandhana leads RCB while Beth Mooney leads the Giants.

Mooney who joined as the skipper this season has failed to change the fortunes of the franchise. So far the Giants are yet to win a game and they have lost all four games from the Bengaluru leg.

They lost their previous game against Delhi Capitals where they failed to chase 164. After being asked to set targets in the first three games, Gujara preferred chasing in their last game and failed at that as well.

The Mithali Raj-led Gujarat management has been struggling to find answers behind the failure of the players to perform. The whole squad looks like a tired unit with none of their batters or bowlers looking in form. They have failed to play together as a unit and put in the clinical performances that are required to win games. Gujarat Giants won the toss opt to bat.

Women’s Premier League: Who said what at the toss?

Smriti Mandhana | RCB Captain: Would’ve fielded first anyway. Looks like a good wicket to bat on. Hectic last 2-3 days, last win was really nice in front of the home crowd. Travel days are always good with this bunch. We’re all ready to go. No changes.

Beth Mooney | GG Captain: We’re going to have a bat. We’re trying to be nice and brave, nice and positive. Do something different and try and see if we can shake things up. The wicket looks like it kept a little low last night, we’ll see what it does in the 2nd innings, probably not as much dew as well. We’ve got one change.
