Former England batsman Ian Bell has officially joined the coaching ranks of the Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming BBL season, aligning forces with head coach David Saker. Following his role as an assistant under Adam Griffith with the Hobart Hurricanes last season, Bell’s coaching expertise has continued to evolve. Renegades’ General Manager, James Rosengarten, lauded Bell’s addition as a significant acquisition, foreseeing his influential impact on team dynamics and performance.

Bell’s coaching journey includes recent consultancy with New Zealand in preparation for the ODI World Cup, coupled with engagements with England Under-19s, Derbyshire, Birmingham Phoenix, and the Chennai Braves in the Abu Dhabi T10.

With a BBL title secured during the 2016-17 season with the Perth Scorchers, Bell brings valuable playing experience to his coaching role. His prior collaboration with Saker during their England days adds a familiar and seasoned dynamic to their coaching partnership at the Melbourne Renegades.

Renegades’ official page quoted James Rosengarten, stating, “We’re thrilled to have someone of Bell’s calibre at the Renegades. His experience at international and domestic levels speaks for itself; he offers that fresh voice and expertise every club needs to succeed in the Big Bash. He’ll be a great fit, and we can’t wait for what he’s going to bring in BBL 13.”

The 41-year-old joins a seasoned Renegades squad, entering a dynamic alongside former Ashes rivals Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon. The team features stalwarts such as Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, and Kane Richardson, contributing to a wealth of experience. His familiarity extends to overseas players Quinton de Kock, Joe Clarke, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, establishing a solid rapport within the team’s diverse talent pool.

The addition of the Warwickshire-born player completes the coaching ensemble for Melbourne Renegades under Saker’s leadership for a third successive season. Lloyd Mash, a seasoned Victorian batter, retains his role as assistant, joined by Matthew Gale, a former Renegades paceman and Cricket Victoria representative, rounding out the coaching lineup for BBL 13. With this final piece in place, the team’s coaching structure appears well-established, gearing up for the upcoming season.
