The ICC is planning huge changes to revive Test and ODI cricket, to make the formats more competitive and engaging for everyone as well. And, one of the major proposals is to make sure a minimum of three games in every World Test Championship (WTC), for non-dominant nations as well.

ICC to bring major changes

However, ICC will see a leadership change as Jay Shah will take over as Chairman from December 1. Before his official signing, ICC has already started working towards the betterment of the Test format as well. The apex body formed a committee to look for ways to promote Test cricket more and as per Insidesports, the committee decided on three major suggestions.

The first is to ensure a minimum of three-match Test series take place in the next World Series Championship (WTC) cycle. Currently, some teams, like South Africa, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, often play two-match Test series, which the ICC believes affects the viewership of the longer format of the game as well. Only India, Australia, and England play longer series now as well.

Rohit Sharma backs for three-match WTC final

Another key point is the encouragement of more Day/Night (D/N) Tests with the pink ball, as well as these matches, have seen better ticket sales. The ICC also feels that D/N Tests could help grow the format by attracting larger fans. India, for example, has not played a pink-ball Test in two years as well. In addition to it, the ICC is also thinking about bringing changes in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). Moreover, a proposal to limit the use of two balls to only the first 25 overs of an ODI is under consideration too.

However, Team India lost two consecutive WTC finals and captain Rohit Sharma proposed changes to the format as well. Instead of a one-game face-off, he wants to play a best-of-three series for the result. He also believes that two years' worth of hard work ends in just one game which is mostly affected by adverse weather conditions. A three-match series would help both teams to play well and the result to be decided more accurately as well.

Amidst speculations and debates surrounding Virat Kohli’s strike rate, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, Ajit Agarkar, has stepped forward to address the concerns ahead of the T20 World Cup squad announcement. Differences Between IPL and International Cricket

In a high-stakes tournament like the T20 World Cup, Agarkar stressed the importance of seasoned campaigners like Virat Kohli. Despite concerns about strike rates, Kohli’s wealth of experience and ability to anchor the innings provide crucial stability to the team’s middle order, balancing the squad’s composition.

<![CDATA[Will Ravindra Jadeja be fit for the 3rd Test? All-rounder shares significant update from NCA]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/will-ravindra-jadeja-be-fit-for-the-3rd-test-all-rounder-shares-significant-update-from-nca/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/will-ravindra-jadeja-be-fit-for-the-3rd-test-all-rounder-shares-significant-update-from-nca/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 12:04:18 GMT

Currently ranked as the top Test all-rounder by the ICC, Ravindra Jadeja sustained a hamstring injury during the first Test against England in Hyderabad. Consequently, he missed the second Test and faces a significant period of recovery. Sharing a photo from the NCA in Bengaluru, where he is attending to his injury, the likelihood of his return for IPL 2024 appears slim, with speculation mounting that he might also miss the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Jadeja’s injury occurred on the fourth day of the first Test in Hyderabad, leading to his absence for the remainder of the series, which India lost by 28 runs. Despite his absence, India staged a remarkable comeback in the second Test, defeating England by 106 runs. Jasprit Bumrah’s stellar performance earned him the Player of the Match award with match figures of 9/91. Notably, India managed well without the services of Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul, who was also ruled out of the second Test due to a right quadriceps issue. However, Rahul’s injury is not severe, and he is expected to return for the third Test of the series.

The timing of Jadeja’s comeback to cricket remains uncertain, contingent upon the extent of his recovery. Rushing back onto the field without adequate rehabilitation poses the risk of exacerbating the injury and jeopardizing his career.

On his Instagram account, Ravindra Jadeja posted an image of himself tending to his injury at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, accompanied by the caption “Getting better🤞.” Fans across the nation and beyond are sending their well-wishes for his speedy recovery, eagerly anticipating his return to the field.

Ravindra Jadeja Shares a Photo of His Recovery Process After Sustaining Injury in the First Test

Currently ranked as the top Test all-rounder by the ICC, Ravindra Jadeja showcased exceptional performance in the first Test, claiming five wickets and scoring 87 runs in the first innings. However, his unfortunate run-out in the second innings contributed to India’s loss and resulted in an injury during the run.

India and England are locked in a five-match Test series, presently leveled at 1-1 following victories from both teams. The hosts suffered a defeat in the first Test in Hyderabad but bounced back strongly to secure a convincing 106-run win in the second Test in Vizag. Notably, India has maintained an undefeated streak in Test series at home since their loss against England in 2012, when they were defeated 2-1 in the four-match series led by Sir Alastair Cook.

Since the 2012 loss to England, India has triumphed in 16 consecutive series and aims to sustain this unbeaten streak by prevailing over the formidable England side in the ongoing series.

<![CDATA[ICC Lifts Ban on SLC, Says Sri Lanka Sports Minister]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/icc-lifts-ban-on-slc-affirms-decision-says-sri-lanka-sports-minister/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/icc-lifts-ban-on-slc-affirms-decision-says-sri-lanka-sports-minister/ Sun, 28 Jan 2024 17:06:18 GMT

Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Harin Fernando, has announced that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has immediately lifted the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The official media release containing this information will be available soon, as confirmed by the Sri Lankan official. On November 10, 2023, the ICC suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket Board due to a “serious breach of its obligations as a Member,” specifically the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and prevent government interference in cricket governance, regulation, and administration in Sri Lanka.

Despite the ban, Sri Lanka was allowed to participate in international cricket in November 2023. However, the hosting rights for the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 were revoked from SLC, leading to the relocation of the competition to South Africa.

The International Cricket Council has released a brief statement providing insights into the recent development. According to the ICC, the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket has been lifted with immediate effect. The suspension was imposed due to the cricket board’s failure to uphold its responsibilities as a member nation. Specifically, the cricket board was required to ensure the absence of government interference in the cricket governing body, a condition it failed to meet, leading to the suspension.

Nevertheless, during the ICC board meeting on November 21, it was determined that Sri Lanka could participate in international series. However, the hosting rights for the U19 World Cup were relocated to South Africa.

Sri Lanka endured a challenging campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023, finishing in the ninth position. The team grappled with numerous injuries, sidelining key players like Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga. Additionally, captain Dasun Shanaka had to withdraw mid-tournament due to injury.

Following Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe dismissed the entire Sri Lanka Cricket board due to alleged corruption within the organization. Ranasinghe subsequently established an interim committee, headed by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga, to investigate the board’s affairs.

However, the Sri Lankan court overturned this decision, reinstating the country’s cricket board for a two-week period. With the recent lifting of the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket, the team can now focus on preparing for upcoming ICC tournaments.

Former West Indies cricketer Marlon Samuels has been handed a six-year ban from all cricket activities after being found guilty of violating the anti-corruption code of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). The ban came into effect on November 11, 2023.

Samuels faced four charges from the ICC in September 2021, and his guilt was established in August of the current year. The charges are related to his involvement with the Karnataka Tuskers in the Abu Dhabi T10 in 2019, where he did not play.

The charges include:

 1. Article 2.4.2 (by majority vote) – Failure to disclose gifts, payments, entertainment, or other benefits that could endanger the participant or the sport of cricket.
 2. Article 2.4.3 (unanimous decision) – Failure to disclose entertainment valued at $750 or more to the appropriate anti-corruption official.
 3. Article 2.4.6 (unanimous decision) – Non-cooperation in the investigation of the designated anti-corruption officer.
 4. Article 2.4.7 (unanimous decision) – Obstructing or delaying the investigation of the designated anti-corruption officer by concealing relevant information.

Alex Marshall, the head of the ICC’s human resources and integrity unit, announced the ban, stating that despite Samuels’ retirement, he was involved in the offenses, and the six-year ban aims to serve as a strong deterrent.

Samuels, a key figure for the West Indies in the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup finals, last played international cricket in 2018 and retired in November 2020 with over 11,000 international runs across all formats. His career has been marred by controversies, including a two-year ban in May 2008 for “receiving any money, advantage, or other reward likely to benefit him or the game of cricket, bringing it into disrepute.

The anticipated Pakistan tour of the Netherlands in the upcoming year has been temporarily postponed due to scheduling challenges, according to reports from Cricbuzz. Originally slated for May, the tour has been put on hold as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) requested the delay, citing a congested national team calendar.

In response to the PCB’s request, the Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB) is collaborating with the PCB to identify a suitable timeframe for rescheduling the series. Initially planned to follow the CWC Super League series in Rotterdam in May 2022, the tour was strategically positioned just ahead of Pakistan’s scheduled visits to Ireland and England. However, with a home series against New Zealand in April and other engagements, the limited available window led to the postponement of the Netherlands tour.

Netherlands Tour Off: Pakistan’s Planned Visit to the Netherlands Called Off

The scheduled tour of the Netherlands by the Pakistan cricket team has been called off, leaving disappointment in its wake. Roland Lefebvre, KNCB High Performance Manager, expressed understanding of the situation, stating optimism for finding a new window to reschedule the series, whether at home or away, in an interview with Cricbuzz.

Post their participation in the ICC World Cup 2023, both teams are reflecting on their performances. Pakistan faced setbacks, failing to reach the semi-finals with five losses in nine league games, concluding fifth on the table. The Dutch team finished ninth, securing two wins and facing seven losses.

In their World Cup encounter, Pakistan commenced their campaign against the Netherlands in Hyderabad. They set a formidable total of 286 while batting first and subsequently bowled out the Dutch for 205 in 41 overs. The Netherlands managed notable victories over Bangladesh and South Africa in the tournament, with their win against the Proteas standing out as one of the surprises.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s cricket journey will take them to Australia for a three-match Test series scheduled from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024. The Test matches are set to be held in Perth (Dec 14-18), MCG (Dec 26-30), and SCG (Jan 3-7).

<![CDATA[ICC Prohibits Transgender Athletes from Participating in International Women's Cricket]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/icc-prohibits-transgender-athletes-from-participating-in-international-womens-cricket/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/icc-prohibits-transgender-athletes-from-participating-in-international-womens-cricket/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 14:58:50 GMT

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced stringent regulations preventing transgender women from participating in international women’s cricket, citing a commitment to preserving the sport’s integrity and ensuring player safety. With a focus on fairness and inclusion, this decision aims to uphold the fundamental spirit of women’s cricket.

The established guidelines, centering on game integrity, safety, and inclusivity, will undergo a thorough review within a two-year timeframe.According to the eligibility criteria, individuals assigned male at birth, undergoing male puberty, regardless of subsequent gender-affirming procedures, will not qualify for international women’s cricket.

After an extensive nine-month consultation process, the ICC board, which includes England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Richard Thompson, finalized these gender eligibility rules. This pivotal decision underscores a commitment to fairness and the preservation of competitive spirit in women’s cricket.

“The changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and are founded in science and aligned with the core principles developed during the review. Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of players,” stated ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice.

Importantly, these regulations exclusively apply to the international sphere of women’s cricket, allowing each national cricket governing body autonomy in determining domestic gender eligibility.

The England and Wales Cricket Board, for instance, advocates for the acceptance of transgender women based on their self-identified gender, emphasizing inclusivity and individual recognition within their stance.

To address safety concerns related to differences in speed, strength, or skill among players, a “disparity policy” has been introduced. This mirrors the approach taken by World Athletics in March, which barred individuals who experienced male puberty from participating in female world ranking events. The new international cricket policy aligns with this decision, aiming to ensure fairness and safety within the sport.
