Newly appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir will need to wait for his coaching team to come together since Morne Morkel might not be available for the Sri Lanka tour. The BCCI is almost finalizing a deal with the former South African bowler, who Gambhir recommended himself.

Gambhir and Morkel worked together for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL during 2022 and 2023. Gambhir has picked his own coaching staff, which is expected to include Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate.

T Dilip and new assistants join the squad

Nayar and ten Doeschate will join the team in Sri Lanka as assistant coaches, and T Dilip is likely to stay on as fielding coach. However without Morkel, India will not have a dedicated bowling coach for this tour since former coach Paras Mhambrey’s contract ended after Team India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory.

Interim bowling coach as Sairaj Bahutule

According to Cricbuzz, Sairaj Bahutule will step in as interim bowling coach. Bahutule a former leg spinner with experience coaching domestic teams like Kerala, Bengal and the Rajasthan Royals (RR), will help the spinners on the subcontinent pitches. India’s squad has several skilled spinners like Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, and Kuldeep Yadav.

The report also notes that Morkel has traveled from Sydney to Pretoria to visit his sick father but is expected to join the team before their next international assignment, a home series against Bangladesh.

Gautam Gambhir will be officially introduced as the new head coach on Monday, July 22, in Mumbai. He will attend a press conference before leaving with the team and support staff for his first assignment.

Team India will head to Sri Lanka on July 22 and start their tour with three ODIs and three T20Is from July 27.

The BCCI is likely to give a well deserved break to captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli for the upcoming three match ODI series against Sri Lanka in August. In their absence, either Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul will probably lead the Indian team.

Rohit and Kohli have had a busy schedule over the past three months, starting with the Indian Premier League (IPL). Both players have asked the BCCI for an extended break to rest and recharge before their next international matches.

Rohit’s continuous participation

This will be Rohit’s first break in nearly six months. He has been playing continuously since the South Africa Test series in December-January, followed by the Afghanistan T20Is, the England Test series, the IPL, and the recent T20 World Cup.

A BCCI source said, “Both are automatic choices in ODI set up and the three 50 over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. For next few months, they both will prioritize Tests and India will play 10 of them between September to January”

India’s packed schedule

India has a busy schedule ahead, starting with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh. Then they will face New Zealand in three Tests before the much anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy, featuring five Test matches against Australia in Australia.

Given the demanding schedule, both the selectors and senior players want to manage their workload effectively. “The Champions Trophy will happen in mid February and they don’t need to go for a week-long 3 match ODIs in Sri Lanka. If they want, they are most welcome but I guess they would want rest,” the source added.

With Rohit unavailable, Pandya seems to be the favorite for the captaincy role. However KL Rahul, who recently led the ODI team in South Africa, is also a strong candidate and should not be overlooked.

Lankans have missed the mark today. Yet, don’t go by the scorecard. They made the Indians sweat a little. Indian bowlers worked effectively and that ensured the hiccups during the chase wasn’t felt a lot. India have a lead and want to consolidate that in matches to come.

India looked for a spot of trouble toward the beginning however at that point Harman and Verma got together. What’s more, after that Harleen Deol likewise added a couple of runs. Also, Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma put the last little details.

India could have been more clinical as they would prefer. SL fought hard notwithstanding setting up a below par total. The wicket was a touch on the slower side and that didn’t help the players by any means.

“I can bat in any position which the team demands. Today we had to focus on partnerships and that’s what we did. It’s not an easy wicket, turns a lot and we had to focus until the end. Pooja is a hard-hitter and she did really well in the partnership.”

<![CDATA[India vs Sri Lanka: Pant shines as India reach 357/6 at stumps on day 1 against SL]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/india-vs-sri-lanka-pant-shines-india-reach-357-6/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/india-vs-sri-lanka-pant-shines-india-reach-357-6/ Fri, 04 Mar 2022 20:17:50 GMT

Indian cricket’s rapidly-rising box-office draw Rishabh Pant owned the center-stage in Virat Kohli’s landmark 100th Test, hammering Sri Lankan bowlers into submission with an enthralling 96 as the hosts reached a commanding 357 for 6 on the opening day of the first Test in Mohali. The 5,000 odd spectators, who had come to watch Kohli perform on a grand stage, saw one of the most flamboyant batters in recent history make a mockery of an average Sri Lankan attack. He was especially brutal when it came to going after left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya (28-2-107-2), who was taken for 22 in one over.

The deathly silence after Kohli’s shock exit for a well-made 45 was there for barely a second and a half. Because at that point entered the stockily built 24-year-old from India’s engineering city of Rourkee and that was followed by a deafening roar which showed his popularity. On Kohli’s day, he had completely overshadowed the legend. And those who came for Kohli decided to stay back and savor Pant’s mayhem as he started with a signature lofted six off Embuldeniya over the mid-wicket fence. In just over one and a half sessions, Pant nearly reached his fourth hundred in Test cricket before veteran Suranga Lakmal (1/63), in his last international series, breached his defense.

There were nine fours and four sixes in his 97-ball knock and one couldn’t but feel for the young man who looked completely devastated after another near-miss, the fifth time that he has gotten out in the 90s. The walk back to the pavilion took an eternity as it seemed that one would need someone to drag him out. But coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma’s decision to send him at number five to bring in the left-hander’s advantage against a left-arm spinner had paid the rich dividends they were hoping for.

India reached a defending total with Pant charging for 96

Embuldeniya didn’t actually bowl as badly as his figures might suggest and was pitching the ball up, putting his body into the deliveries, and getting them to spin away from the right-handers. Pant being a southpaw obviously diminished his advantage to an extent and then his decision to stand at least a couple of yards outside the crease made the difference. He turned a lot of good length deliveries into over-pitched ones and Embuldeniya, along with other spinners like Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva (1/47), also suffered. The one-handed sixes, which he can now hit on public demand, were in full display for the motley crowd.

It also helped that Dimuth Karunaratne’s mindset was defensive from the word go since Rohit Sharma (29) and Mayank Agarwal (33) had a brisk 50-run stand. Once a fielding side skipper stations a deep point, deep square leg and deep fine leg within the first hour of the first day, one can get a sense that he has already thrown the towel and playing a waiting game of cutting down boundaries. Even then, Pant found the gaps with very little difficulty when he took guard in the 44th over after Kohli and Hanuma Vihari (58 off 128 balls) had a 90-run stand.

Vihari made good use of his chance in place of veteran Cheteshwar Pujara and looked in control during his stand with Kohli before he inside edged Vishwa Fernando’s delivery onto the stumps. It was a perfect setting to score a second Test hundred but Vihari let it slip and became Fernando’s only scalp of the day. A total of 170 for 3 is a neither here nor there and a lot of batters will be caught in two minds – whether to defend or to attack.

The first India Vs Sri Lanka game was played with both sides severely depleted. India’s bench strength turned out to be stronger as Sri Lanka were completely outplayed. The game turned out to be a chance for India as they tried all their bowling options and didn’t use their main bowlers completely. The likes of Bumrah, Chahal, Harshal Patel and Kumar finished without completing their quota. India also tried Jadeja up the order. A spot of bother though is the fielding and Rohit Sharma has acknowledged the area of weakness.

Sri Lanka struggled to get going but will be happy seeing Asalanka’s form and Karunaratne’s striking ability. They will be without Theekshana for the rest of the series and will be hoping Hasaranga returns soon in the India Vs Sri Lanka series.

Surya Kumar Yadav, the player of the series in the T20Is against the West Indies, is injured and will miss the match. It’s a fantastic chance for young players to seize it with both hands.

Sri Lanka, on the other side, had a disastrous last T20I series against Australia, losing 4-1. They were relieved after winning the last T20I. They don’t have a great record against India, having only won one bilateral T20I series. Beating India on home turf will be a tremendous test for them.

Sri Lanka Playing XI

Key Player

Shreyas Iyer

For the West Indies T20Is, Shreyas Iyer was in and out of the team, and it was sad that he had to sit out the first two games. He did got his turn in the third game, but although looking well in the little time he was out in the middle, he could only hit a quickfire 25 off 16 balls.

Harshal Patel

Harshal Patel has been a revelation for India since his introduction to the team, and he has made a solid case for his inclusion ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year. The Haryana all-rounder was one of India’s major takeaways from the West Indies series, and despite being new to international cricket, he has handled pressure admirably.

Team News

 • Despite the fact that Sri Lanka won the last IT20 encounter of their five-match series in Australia, we do not anticipate them to use the same XI in India.
 • Rohit Sharma’s team dominated the West Indies earlier this month, and he has named another strong lineup for this series.

Match Prediction for India vs Sri Lanka

For the T20I series, India has decided to rest major guns like Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, but they will return for the longer format. Sanju Samson has been recalled to the side as Ishan Kishan’s backup wicketkeeper, and the series is considered to be a significant chance for the youth.

In the meanwhile, Sri Lanka is coming off a 1-4 setback in Australia, although they were able to put together some positives towards the conclusion of the series. Pathum Nissanka had a fantastic series with the bat, while Lahiru Kumara impressed with his speed. Due to Covid-19, they will be without their match-winner Wanindu Hasaranga, who can turn games around with both bat and ball. We think India will steal the win this time.

Sri Lanka cricket has promised the national team hefty prize money as they ended the limited-overs series against India on a high. Sri Lanka completed a remarkable comeback after losing the ODI leg to win their first T20I series since October 2019. Impressed by their achievements, the cricket board has announced prize money of USD 100,000.

After competing exceptionally well in the ODI series, Sri Lanka got the better of India in the shortest format. Though the home side lost the opening T20I, they brought their A-game with the ball against the visitors in the final two games. While the Indian side had been hugely depleted after the first match, it doesn’t take away an incredible performance from underconfident hosts.

Wanindu Hasaranga, the leg-spinner, earned the man of the series award as he left the Indian batsmen in two minds in all three games. The 24-year old grabbed figures of 4-0-9-4 in the final T20 international to restrict India to 81-8 in their stipulated overs. Reportedly, Hasaranga also remains in line to replace Adam Zampa for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second phase of IPL 2021.

“The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket lauded the effort of the players, coaches, and the support staff for bringing this much-needed victory, which it believes will augur well for the national team going forward,” said SLC in an official statement.

“Hence, in order to recognize this victory, the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to award a sum of USD 100,000 for the national team.” Wanindu Hasaranga’s four-wicket haul and Dhananjaya de Silva’s unbeaten 23-run knock helped Sri Lanka defeat India by seven wickets in the third and final T20I. With this win, Sri Lanka won the series 2-1.

In the last game, India didn’t have quite a few of their players, who went into isolation after Krunal Pandya tested positive for COVID-19. India played with only five specialist batters in their last two T20Is at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and their inexperience in batting showed.

Wanindu Hasaranga ran through their batting as he picked up four wickets and gave away only nine runs in his quota of four overs. He also got support from Shanaka, who picked two wickets.

Earlier, Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga showed remarkable skills with the ball as the Indian batting line-up was restricted to a mediocre 81/8 in the allotted twenty overs. After being eight down for 63, Chetan Sakariya and Kuldeep Yadav ensured the visitors got over the 80-run mark.

In the run-chase, Dhananjaya de Silva’s unbeaten 20-ball 23 helped the Lankans over the line. For India, Rahul Chahar picked up three wickets in his four overs, giving away 15 runs.
