Sanju Samson was not selected for the Champions Trophy 2025 squad, announced on 18th January at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. This news came as a surprise, especially after his excellent performances in T20 cricket. Despite his strong form in the T20 format, with a century in the Bangladesh T20 series and two consecutive centuries in the South Africa T20 series, Samson was not included in the squad. Many had expected him to be named due to his recent form, but his omission raised questions.

Samson had played in the Bangladesh T20 series first, followed by the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he led his home team, Kerala. After that, he participated in the South Africa T20 series. Given the tight schedule, Samson decided to rest before the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, as he felt this would allow him to perform better in the 50-over format. However, during this rest period, Kerala's state team had a camp to prepare for the Vijay Hazare Trophy season, and Samson chose not to join the camp. This decision led to his exclusion from the state team, which became a point of controversy.

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) secretary, Vinod S. Kumar, clarified the situation, stating that Samson had informed them via email that he would not be available for the camp. The team held a short camp in Wayanad without him, and naturally, only players who were part of the camp were considered for selection. This led to no further discussion with Samson on the matter.

Samson's absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy was a key issue. According to the new guidelines, players are expected to play domestic cricket if not on national duty. Samson's decision to skip the tournament did not sit well with the BCCI selectors, and reports suggested that the BCCI was unhappy with his casual approach.

BCCI Asks Samson About His Absence from Vijay Hazare

In this matter, the BCCI not only spoke to the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) but also directly engaged with Sanju Samson. According to reports, the BCCI asked Samson why he chose not to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Samson's response was that he had informed the KCA that he would not be joining the camp, as he felt the Kerala board had not required his presence. The BCCI, however, was not satisfied with this explanation.

BCCI’s Response to Samson's Explanation

The BCCI emphasized the new rules, which require players to participate in domestic cricket if they are not on national duty. They were concerned that Samson's decision to skip the camp went against the spirit of these regulations, especially considering that the Vijay Hazare Trophy was an important opportunity for him to prove himself in the 50-over format.

Samson’s Defense of His Actions

Later, in this conversation, Samson reportedly responded to the BCCI, explaining that in the past, when he had not joined the camp, the board had still selected him. He thought the same would happen this time. However, the BCCI found this response even more casual and irresponsible.

The BCCI was disappointed with Samson's casual attitude towards domestic cricket and his failure to join the Kerala camp. His actions were viewed as irresponsible, especially in light of the new rules emphasizing the importance of domestic cricket. This, in turn, led to his omission from the squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.

The BCCI's stance is clear: they now emphasize that players should participate in domestic cricket, as it helps with their overall performance and development. Samson's failure to join the camp and his casual approach to the Vijay Hazare Trophy cost him a spot in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad. His omission highlights the consequences of not adhering to the expectations set by the board.

Samson is currently part of the T20 series against England, which began on 22nd January, and is seen as a regular opener in the T20 side. However, his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad continues to be a major talking point.

Prithvi Shaw’s career is going through a tough phase. His downfall is hard to understand, especially when we look at how he started. Once seen as the next big star of Indian cricket, Shaw is now facing criticism from all sides—fans, experts, former players, and even current players. Many believe his career is over.

The last six months have been especially difficult for Shaw. He was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy teams, showing how much he is struggling. At 26 years old, it seems like nothing is going right for him.

To make things worse, Shaw went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, even with a base price of ₹75 lakh. It’s surprising to see a player, once called the future of Indian cricket, now not picked by any of the 10 teams.

Shaw made a dream debut for India in October 2018 against the West Indies, scoring a century and becoming the youngest Indian to do so at just 18 years old. He was full of talent and expected to have a bright future. But his last match for India was on July 15, 2021. Since then, he has been trying hard to return to the team, but things have only gotten worse.

Reasons Behind Shaw's Downfall

There are many reasons behind Shaw’s career struggles. His inconsistent performances have made it hard for selectors to trust him. Fitness issues have also been a big problem, with questions about whether he meets the required standards. In 2023, he was dropped from the Ranji Trophy team for the first time because of poor fitness.

Controversies have added to his troubles. Reports about his partying lifestyle have hurt his reputation. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) even claimed that Shaw often skips training and was seen partying until 6 a.m. during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Such behavior has raised serious doubts about his work ethic.

Shreyas Iyer on Shaw's Comeback

Despite his struggles, many believe Shaw can still make a comeback if he works on his weaknesses. His former teammate Shreyas Iyer has expressed confidence in Shaw’s talent.

His teammate Shreyas Iyer believes that Shaw’s talent has never been in question. However, it is his discipline and work ethic that need improvement. If Shaw can work on these aspects, there is no reason why he can’t make a comeback to the Indian team.

Shreyas Iyer said, “Prithvi Shaw also started on a great note. He’s got a great blessing of timing the ball and scoring runs at a great pace. And all of us in the team feel that he is blessed with that phenomenal talent. So, he just has to focus on his work ethic, and everything else will follow. He’s God-gifted."

Shreyas Iyer will be a key part of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad, following his remarkable performance in the ICC World Cup 2023. In 10 innings, Iyer amassed 526 runs with an impressive average of 70.17 and a strike rate of 106.58. His contributions included three half-centuries and two centuries, showcasing his ability to perform on the big stage.

Iyer has now solidified his place as India’s No. 4 batsman in ODIs, a position that had been a concern for the team for years. With such consistency, he is expected to play a pivotal role in India’s campaign for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

<![CDATA[Rohit vs. Pandya: Reports Suggest Rohit Doesn't Want Pandya as Vice-Captain]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/rohit-vs-pandya-reports-suggest-rohit-doesn-t-want-pandya-as-vice-captain/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/rohit-vs-pandya-reports-suggest-rohit-doesn-t-want-pandya-as-vice-captain/ Sun, 19 Jan 2025 15:46:10 GMT

On Saturday, January 18, the Indian cricket team announced its squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will begin on February 19, along with the team for the three-match ODI series against England from February 6 to 12. However, one decision in particular caught everyone’s attention: the appointment of Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the team.

This announcement sparked heated discussions, especially after Dainik Jagran reported that a serious argument had taken place during the squad selection meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. The meeting, which was supposed to wrap up by 12:30 PM, went on for over two hours longer than planned. The delay reportedly happened due to disagreements over who should be named vice-captain. Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar pushed for Shubman Gill, seeing him as a potential future leader for Indian cricket. On the other hand, head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly backed Hardik Pandya for the role, emphasizing Pandya’s leadership skills and proven track record.

The controversy gained more traction when fans started linking the debate to past IPL events. During the 2024 IPL season, Hardik Pandya had taken over the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians from Rohit Sharma. This led to speculation that personal issues between Rohit and Pandya might have influenced the decision at the selection meeting. Many accused Rohit of letting IPL dynamics interfere with national team decisions, while others believed promoting Gill was the right move for India’s future.

Hardik Pandya, once seen as the next leader of the Indian cricket team, rose to prominence by leading the Gujarat Titans to the IPL final in 2022 and clinching the title in 2023. His leadership potential earned him the vice-captaincy in both ODIs and T20Is, where he successfully led India during Rohit Sharma’s absence. Despite being vice-captain during India's victorious T20 World Cup campaign in June 2024, his poor performance as captain in the 2024 IPL and other factors led to his sudden exclusion from the leadership group.

Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20 Internationals, the obvious choice for leadership seemed to be Hardik Pandya, given his previous experience and success. However, in a surprising move, Hardik was replaced by Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain, with Axar Patel stepping in as vice-captain. Additionally, Shubman Gill was appointed as the ODI vice-captain under Rohit Sharma's leadership. This unexpected change has left Pandya entirely out of the picture.

There has also been significant discussion around the exclusion of Karun Nair and Sanju Samson from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Karun Nair, who had an exceptional Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season with 752 runs in 7 innings, including 5 centuries at a staggering average of 389.5, was surprisingly overlooked. Similarly, Sanju Samson's exclusion has sparked debates comparing his performances to Rishabh Pant’s.

<![CDATA[Captain Rohit Sharma Travels to Pakistan?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/captain-rohit-sharma-travels-to-pakistan/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/captain-rohit-sharma-travels-to-pakistan/ Sun, 12 Jan 2025 14:28:57 GMT

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the tournament, especially with Pakistan being one of the host countries. While India’s team will be playing its matches in Dubai, there’s still the question of whether India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, will travel to Pakistan for the pre-tournament captain’s photo shoot and press conference. This question raises important issues about politics, security, and the relationship between the two nations.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will begin on February 19, and the tournament will follow a unique hybrid model. The games will be held in both Pakistan and Dubai, with India’s team playing all of its matches in Dubai. The hybrid model was specially designed for this tournament to allow India to play its games outside Pakistan due to political tensions between the two countries.

This decision has created a special scenario where one of the host countries, Pakistan, has the possibility of adjusting the venue for the semifinals and final. If India reaches the semifinals, the venue can be flexible, with one semifinal in Dubai and the other in Pakistan. The final itself may also be moved between Dubai and Pakistan, depending on the situation. The exact location of the final won't be confirmed until the last week, as the ICC is considering dual grounds for preparation, with decisions made according to the circumstances.

Will Rohit Sharma Travel to Pakistan for ICC Captain’s Event?

Before the tournament begins, there’s usually a big event with the captains of all the teams. They gather for a photo shoot with the Champions Trophy and take part in a press conference where they discuss their teams and expectations for the tournament. This event is a standard part of any major ICC tournament.

The question on everyone’s mind is whether Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, will be able to attend this event, which could take place in Pakistan. Given the political tensions between India and Pakistan, there’s a strong possibility that this event might be shifted to Dubai, where the Indian team is comfortable. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has all the rights to organize such events, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may not allow Indian players to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns and diplomatic issues.

BCCI’s Likely Response

The ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan have been a significant factor in the decision-making process. India has not played bilateral cricket with Pakistan for many years, and even in ICC events, the teams rarely meet outside of tournaments. This has led to uncertainty about whether Rohit Sharma, or any Indian cricketer, would travel to Pakistan for the captain’s event.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the BCCI controls India’s participation in such events, and the board has historically been cautious about sending players to Pakistan. This means that even if the PCB insists on hosting the event in Pakistan, it is unlikely that the BCCI will allow Indian players to travel there. As a result, the captain’s event could easily be moved to Dubai, where the other teams’ captains would be present.

A Possible Shift to Dubai

Given the current circumstances, it seems more likely that the ICC will move the captain’s photo shoot and press conference to Dubai. This would ensure that all the captains are in attendance, including Rohit Sharma, without putting the players or the Indian cricket board in a difficult situation. Dubai has often served as a neutral venue for international cricket events, making it the ideal location for this kind of gathering.

Recently, Gautam Gambhir has been at the center of a heated controversy after former cricketer Manoj Tiwary made strong remarks about his leadership and public image. In the wake of these comments, several players have come forward to show their support for Gambhir, with Nitish Rana being one of the first to defend him. Following this, Harshit Rana, another member of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad under Gambhir's coaching in IPL 2024, also stepped up to express his support.

Harshit, who played under Gambhir’s coaching during last year's IPL and the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, took to social media to back the former cricketer. He shared his thoughts by uploading an Instagram story in which he addressed the criticism, emphasizing that criticizing someone due to personal insecurities was unfair and wrong. Harshit highlighted Gambhir's selfless leadership and the support he consistently provided to his players, especially during tough times, and always gave them the limelight when things were going well.

Harshit highlighted Gambhir’s selfless leadership, noting how he always focused on the players' well-being and their success on the field. Harshit added that Gambhir consistently supported his players, especially when they were going through tough times, and always gave them the limelight when things were going well. He further expressed that Gambhir had immense knowledge of how to turn games in favor of the team, demonstrating strategic brilliance as a coach.

Nitish Rana, another former KKR player, also expressed his support for Gambhir, defending him against the criticism. He took to Twitter, suggesting that Tiwary’s comments were rooted in personal insecurities and reaffirmed Gambhir’s qualities as a selfless and effective leader. Rana highlighted Gambhir’s consistent ability to motivate and support his players, reinforcing the idea that Gambhir’s leadership was both genuine and impactful.

The controversy began when Manoj Tiwary criticized Gambhir for allegedly taking all the credit for KKR’s 2012 IPL win. Tiwary suggested that Gambhir’s public image overshadowed the contributions of other key players, including himself, Jacques Kallis, and Sunil Narine. He also raised concerns about Gambhir’s leadership during his coaching tenure with the Indian team. Tiwary’s comments, which gained attention after being aired in a viral interview, sparked a wave of debate in the cricketing community.

Manoj Tiwary, a former Indian cricketer who played alongside Gautam Gambhir for both India and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has openly criticized Gambhir's leadership and coaching methods. Tiwary expressed his concerns following India's recent performance under Gambhir's coaching, particularly the loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Manoj Tiwary has openly criticized Gautam Gambhir, accusing him of using his public image to make it appear that he was the main reason for the team's victories. Tiwary believes that Gambhir's media presence overshadowed the contributions of other players.

He pointed out that during the 2012 IPL win with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Gambhir received all the credit, even though it was a team effort. Tiwary mentioned that players like Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine, and himself also played significant roles in the victory. He feels that Gambhir's portrayal in the media made it seem like he was the only one responsible for the win.

Tiwary also criticized Gambhir’s performance as the coach of the Indian cricket team. Under Gambhir's leadership, India faced several tough losses, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and ODI series defeats against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Tiwary feels that Gambhir's coaching style was not effective, and the appointments of assistant coaches like Abhishek Nayar and Morne Morkel did not help either. According to Tiwary, these coaches were not able to challenge Gambhir’s decisions, which ultimately hurt the team’s performance.

Tiwary didn’t stop there. He also raised concerns about Gambhir’s relationship with Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain. Tiwary pointed out that Rohit, who has led India to multiple victories, including the World Cup, might face challenges working with Gambhir, whose leadership success was mainly limited to the IPL.

Tiwary also noted that Gambhir seemed to favor players from Mumbai, such as Rohit and Abhishek Nayar, while overlooking players from other regions who performed well but were less vocal about their achievements. One example Tiwary mentioned was Jalaj Saxena, a talented player who, despite his strong performances, was ignored.

After the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 (BGT), now the focus is on the Champions Trophy which will start on 19th February 2025. The selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will soon announce the squad.

England hosted the Champions Trophy 2017, this time Pakistan will host the 2025 Champions Trophy and a different venue has been decided for India where India will play its match because due to India-Pakistan controversies, India has refused to go to Pakistan.

The last Champions Trophy was held in 2017 and the champion was Pakistan and the runner-up was India.

Pakistan is the champion of the Champions Trophy and India is the runner-up, Pakistan will try its best to defend its title and India will also try its best to win the Champions Trophy this time. Now let’s see the weaknesses and strengths, the probable squad, and the probable playing 11 of Team India in this Champions Trophy.

India Probable Squad:

Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami & Arshdeep Singh.

India Probable Playing 11:

Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Mohammed Shami

After losing BGT 2024-25, India will now focus on their white-ball cricket 5 T20I and 3 ODI matches home series against England.

The selection committee has not announced the squad yet, and its deadline is also 12th January to announce the squad for the Champions Trophy, but the team can make changes till 13th February.

India's squad for the ODI series against England will likely remain unchanged for the Champions Trophy, given the short time gap between the two events.

Strength:

India is one of the strongest teams in Group A and has an attacking opener like Rohit Sharma Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill as opening partner options. Yashasvi Jaiswal is an attacking player just like Rohit. Regarding the middle order, there is Virat Kohli whom India calls a run machine and Virat Kohli's consistency will help in the run leads.

After the batsmen, if we talk about all-rounders then there is Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel who have shown good performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup. If we talk about bowlers then there will be Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj and if Shami recovers from his injury then he will be there.

Weakness

India’s major concern over the year is their under-pressure situation, almost every time India has failed to tackle pressure situations in crucial matches or knockouts. And the middle-order concerns - middle-order failure being a question.

India will play their first match against Bangladesh on 20th February - Dubai

On the 23rd Feb, they will play their second match against Pakistan - Dubai

On the 2nd March, India will play their last group stage match against New Zealand - Dubai

Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal, who was part of the squad in the recently held Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, witnessed India losing the series 3-1. After the series, Padikkal decided to spend some days in Australia to relax and enjoy a holiday. During one of his outings, he visited a cricket store, where he had a heartwarming encounter with a young boy, which led to a touching moment.

Padikkal noticed the boy excitedly searching for a new bat and cricket gear with his mother. The scene reminded him of his own childhood visits to cricket stores. Inspired by the memory, Padikkal decided to make the boy’s day even more special.

In a post on Instagram, Padikkal shared the story. He wrote, “Saw this little kid at the cricket store today with his mom, all excited, looking for a new bat and other gear. Reminded me of my childhood and how special these days at the store used to be. Offered to give him whatever he wanted on the day, hoping to make his day a little bit more special. Simple joys.”

In the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Devdutt Padikkal played in the first Test match in Perth, where India won. He replaced Shubman Gill at number 3 in the batting order due to Gill's injury. Although Padikkal was part of the team, he was benched for the next match in Adelaide when Gill returned. Padikkal did not get a chance to play in the next four matches.

In his first innings at Perth, Padikkal was out for a duck after facing 23 balls. However, in the second innings, he looked much better, scoring 25 runs before getting out. Padikkal made his Test debut on March 7, 2024, in Dharamsala against England during India's home series. In his debut innings, he impressed everyone by scoring 65 runs.

The Champions Trophy 2025 will start on February 19 in Pakistan, with some matches also being held in Dubai. Before this big event, India will play a three-match ODI series against England from February 6 to February 12. This series is important for India to test their team and decide the best combination. The team selectors are looking at players who are in good form and can perform well in key matches.

Reports say the team for the Champions Trophy will be mostly similar to the one from the World Cup 2023. But the selectors are also considering new players who have done well recently. One such player is Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has performed well in T20 and Test matches for India. Even though he has not played an ODI yet, his performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 was excellent. He scored 391 runs, the most by any Indian player in the series.

In the T20 World Cup 2024, Jaiswal was picked as a backup opener over Shubman Gill. However, he didn’t get a chance to play because Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli opened the batting. Shubman Gill’s recent form has been disappointing, which might give Jaiswal an opportunity.

Consideration for the England Series and Champions Trophy

With Rohit Sharma leading the team, the management is thinking about using Jaiswal as a left-handed opener. Pairing him with Rohit, who is a right-hander, could make the batting stronger and more balanced.

The England series will be a chance for the selectors and team management to see which players are ready for the Champions Trophy. Jaiswal’s recent performances and talent have made him a strong option for India’s ODI team. Whether he gets selected or not will depend on how the team plans to prepare for the big tournament.
