Legendary English right-arm pacer James Anderson has registered his name for the IPL 2025 mega auction. Anderson opened up about his excitement for the most successful T20 league in the world.

The 42-year-old right-arm pacer James Anderson retired from international cricket after the last July Lord’s Test against West Indies. Anderson finished his Test career as the most Test wicket-taker by a pacer with 704 Test wickets.

Apart from picking up 704 Test wickets, Anderson also took 269 ODI wickets and 18 T20I wickets, which made him the leading wicket-taker as a pacer in international cricket history with 991 international wickets.

Legendary pacer Anderson picked up 1126 first-class wickets, 358 List A wickets, and 48 T20 wickets. The last time Anderson played a T20 match was in August 2014.

I'd love to have an opportunity to play somewhere: James Anderson

Anderson feels that he is fit to continue his cricket career. The right-arm fast-medium pacer wants to take challenges on the field.

According to Sky Sports, Anderson said, “That is the whole point of going to the auction, I think. I want to play cricket again. Whether I get picked or not is a different matter. There is definitely a feeling inside of me that I have got more to offer, in some shape or form. So, however long down the line that might be, in whatever capacity that might be I am not sure yet.

"But I'm really keen to play. I feel really fit, I've been bowling still, ticking over, so I feel like I'm in a good place and I'd love to have an opportunity to play somewhere.”

Keep my fingers crossed: Anderson on IPL auction

Anderson has registered his name for the upcoming IPL mega-auction at a base price of INR 1.25 crore. When he was asked whether any IPL team contacted him, he had a negative answer. However, he is keeping hope to experience the most popular T20 league.

Anderson said, "Nothing yet. We'll just have to wait and see; keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.”

A total of 1574 players, including 409 foreign players, have registered for the IPL 2025 mega auction. The number will be shrunk before the beginning of the mega auction, as 204 slots are available.

Jeddah in Saudi Arabia will host the IPL 2025 mega auction on November 24 and 25.

So, it will be a huge battle for the registered players, as Anderson will have to face challenges to earn a chance in the IPL.

The mega auction dates for the IPL 2025 were announced on Tuesday. The registered players’ names were also reported on the same night. A popular international all-rounder will miss the IPL 2025.

While October 31 was the retention deadline for all teams, the IPL 2025 mega auction will be organised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25. There are 204 slots available for the mega auction.

A total of 1574 players, including 1165 Indians and 409 overseas players, have registered for the upcoming mega auction. However, before the mega auction, the long list will be shrunk after receiving the inputs from the franchises.

Meanwhile, ESPNcricinfo has also brought an important update about the names of the top registered players for the mega auction.

Ben Stokes likely to miss IPL 2025

According to ESPNcricinfo reports, the English all-rounder Ben Stokes, who last played IPL in 2023, isn’t on the list of the registered players’ names for the upcoming mega auction.

Stokes was the most valuable player in the IPL 2017, which was his first IPL season. However, he has hardly played IPL since 2021. While he played only one match for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 before suffering a finger injury, he missed out on the IPL 2022 season because he wanted to focus on Test cricket.

After Chennai Super Kings bought Stokes for INR 16.25 crore for the IPL 2023, he played only two matches that season as the knee injury and later international duty forced him to remain unavailable for the IPL team.

Like the auction for the IPL 2024, Stokes is reportedly not present for the IPL 2025 mega auction. It also means that the all-rounder will miss the subsequent mini-auctions.

Will James Anderson make his IPL debut?

While the upcoming mega auction will see many great international players, former England pacer James Anderson is also a surprising name on the list. While Anderson last played a T20 match in 2014, he has never experienced the IPL. According to an ESPNcricinfo report, Anderson has a base price of INR 1.25 crore.

Indian players in the highest base price

Talking about the highest base price for the upcoming mega auction, many Indian cricketers are in the INR 2 crore base price list. Injured Mohammed Shami, who hasn’t played a cricket match since the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia in November 2023, including missing out on the IPL 2024, is also standing in the highest base price list.

The other Indian players’ names in the INR 2 crore base price list for the upcoming mega auctions are Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Venkatesh Iyer, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, T Natarajan, Devdutt Padikkal, Krunal Pandya, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj,  Umesh Yadav, etc.

England captain Ben Stokes has backed senior pace bowler Chris Woakes to lead England’s bowling attack without the veteran speedster James Anderson. With Anderson’ retiring’s retirement from international cricket after England’s convincing victory over the West Indies in the first Test at Lord’s, Woakes is all set to become the new leader for England’s bowling unit. However, despite the absence of veteran pacers, Stokes is optimistic about Woakes’ ability to fill the void as well.

“I see it (James Anderson’s retirement) as an opportunity for someone like Chris Woakes to take up the leadership role in the bowling unit,” Stokes stated on Wednesday. “Woaksy is a very experienced bowler, a very experienced player. We have been so used to Jimmy and Broady doing that. But we don’t have them now. I see that as an opportunity for Woaksy. (Woakes has been) A phenomenal performer, especially in England and great for him now to lead the attack.”

James Anderson remains with the squad as part of the support staff

Although James Anderson has retired from the game, he remains with the squad as part of the support staff as well. Stokes added that the positive impact Anderson’s presence has had on the team, especially in providing valuable guidance to the bowlers as well.

“The last few days have been really good,” Stokes noted. “You can see that the lads are really desperate to pick his brains. Obviously before that it was a bit different. Jimmy has always been preparing for his games, so it’s about letting him do his stuff and pick his brains as much as you can, that felt appropriate. But now obviously he’s just standing there and you can see lads drawn towards him wanting to pick his brains about what he thinks, how he holds certain deliveries.”

“I think it has been a very, very smooth transition. But there is no doubt that there have been emotions with Jimmy. But with him still being around the team, I think he still knows that he has so much more to offer to the game with the ball. Couldn’t think of a better bloke to be able to pass on the knowledge of fast bowling to the guys we have with us at the moment,” Ben Stokes concluded.

James Anderson concluded his illustrious international career in spectacular fashion as England secured a commanding victory over the West Indies in the first Test at Lord’s. Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker, played a pivotal role on the third morning, taking one of the final four wickets to seal a win by an innings and 114 runs. The 41-year-old veteran was honored with a guard of honour from both teams as he entered the field, visibly moved by the standing ovation from the appreciative crowd at the home of cricket. The match seemed all but decided the previous evening when West Indies were struggling at 79-6, still 171 runs away from forcing England to bat again.

Anderson set the tone for the day by bowling the first full over and soon striking in his second, dismissing Joshua da Silva caught behind. Gus Atkinson then made history by becoming the first England bowler since 1976 to take a 10-wicket haul on Test debut, as he had Alzarri Joseph caught at long leg and then bowled Shamar Joseph. The anticipation was palpable as the stage seemed set for Anderson to complete his fairytale farewell, but he narrowly missed a caught-and-bowled opportunity off Gudakesh Motie, leaving the final act for Atkinson.

Atkinson continued his remarkable debut by taking the last wicket of Jayden Seales, caught at deep square leg, which left the West Indies all out for 136. His figures of 5-61 in the second innings and 12-106 in the match were the best by an England debutant in 134 years. This victory ended England’s streak of four successive Test defeats and gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The day was not only a celebration of Anderson’s storied career but also a testament to England’s potential for a resurgence in Test cricket.

Immediately transitioning from player to mentor, Anderson joined the England coaching staff as a bowling mentor for the second Test at Trent Bridge, which begins on Thursday. His wealth of experience and knowledge will undoubtedly be invaluable to the team as they look to build on this significant win.

Detailed Analysis of James Anderson’s 21-Year Long Test Career

On the very ground where he made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in 2003, James Anderson walked down the pavilion steps for the final time. As he made his way onto the field, he passed between two lines of players who stood in tribute, while the big screen displayed his image alongside the caption “James Anderson The Greatest.” It was a poignant moment that bridged the past and the future of English cricket. On one side was Gus Atkinson, making his debut, and on the other, Anderson, in his 188th and final Test. Together, they bowled unchanged in tandem throughout the hour of play on Friday morning, symbolizing the continuity and evolution of England’s cricketing legacy.

James Anderson concluded his Test career with impressive figures of 3-32, bringing his total to 704 Test wickets, placing him third on the all-time list behind legendary spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. England has now made the tough decision to move forward without Anderson, and the team must prepare for a future without their iconic bowler. His departure marks the end of an era in English cricket, one that saw Anderson’s consistent excellence and remarkable durability over nearly two decades.

Throughout his illustrious career, Anderson played under eight Test captains, including notable names such as Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan, Andrew Flintoff, Andrew Strauss, Kevin Pietersen, Alastair Cook, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes. He showcased his skills on 50 different Test grounds, partnered with 109 teammates, and faced 409 opponents. Anderson’s bowling prowess led to the dismissal of 261 different batters, and he delivered more than 40,000 balls in Test cricket. These statistics underscore not only his talent and longevity but also his significant impact on the game and his irreplaceable presence in the England squad.

James Anderson’s career can be divided into three distinct phases, each marked by remarkable achievements and evolving mastery. Between the ages of 21 and 29, he took 268 wickets at an average of 30.3, with 12 five-wicket hauls, showcasing his early promise and relentless pace. As he entered his 30s, from age 30 to 34, Anderson refined his craft, claiming 212 wickets at a significantly improved average of 25.4, adding another 10 five-wicket hauls to his tally.

This period underscored his transformation into one of the world’s premier bowlers. However, it was his performance from age 35 to 42 that truly defied expectations. During these years, Anderson captured 224 wickets at an astounding average of 22.7, again achieving 10 five-wicket hauls. This phase highlighted not only his enduring skill but also his remarkable ability to adapt and thrive even as he aged, solidifying his legacy as one of cricket’s greatest fast bowlers.

ECB announces the addition of Mark Wood to their squad for the second Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge. This move comes in the wake of Jimmy Anderson’s retirement, opening up a crucial spot in England’s bowling lineup. As England looks to secure a series win, Wood’s inclusion brings both excitement and strategic advantage to the team.

Jimmy Anderson’s retirement

The retirement of Jimmy Anderson, one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history, marks the end of an era for England. Anderson’s departure leaves a significant void in the team, both in terms of skill and experience. His remarkable career, spanning over two decades, saw him become the highest wicket-taker among fast bowlers in Test cricket, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations.

The Second test at Trent Bridge

The second Test at Trent Bridge holds immense importance for England as they aim to clinch the series against the West Indies. With Anderson’s retirement, England’s bowling lineup for the second Test features a mix of seasoned campaigners and promising talents.

The competition for the vacant seamer spot includes Mark Wood, Matt Potts, and Dillon Pennington, each bringing unique strengths to the table.

Mark Wood’s recent form

Mark Wood’s recent form has been impressive, showcasing his ability to bowl at high speeds consistently. His performances in the recent series have demonstrated his match-winning potential, making him a strong contender for the seamer spot.

Matt Potts, Wood’s county teammate, and Dillon Pennington from Nottinghamshire are also vying for the seamer spot. Potts has shown considerable promise with his ability to swing the ball both ways, while Pennington, though uncapped, has been in stellar form at the county level.

Gus Atkinson’s debut performance

Gus Atkinson’s debut in the opening Test was nothing short of spectacular, taking 12 wickets and making an indelible mark. Given his performance, Atkinson is likely to retain his place, providing a formidable option in England’s bowling arsenal. His ability to generate pace and movement will be vital in the upcoming match.

England’s spin option

Shoaib Bashir, the spinner in the squad, had a quiet first Test where he did not get an opportunity to bowl. The success of England’s seam attack at Lord’s raises questions about the need for a spinner in the second Test. However, Bashir’s role cannot be discounted, especially if the pitch offers turn or if the conditions change.

West Indies’ performance in first test

The West Indies faced a heavy defeat in the first Test, losing by an innings and 114 runs. Despite the loss, they have several key players who could pose a challenge to England. The team’s performance in the second Test will be critical as they look to bounce back and keep the series alive.

England men’s Test squad:

Ben Stokes (Durham, c), Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Surrey), Dillon Pennington (Nottinghamshire), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).

Anderson, however, missed out on this iconic moment. In his last over, Anderson bowled to Motie, who was beaten on the flick with a short-of-length delivery. An appeal for LBW was half-hearted and dismissed due to the height and angle down leg.

A career that spanned nearly two decades, marked by remarkable consistency and unparalleled skill, was celebrated with a performance that reminded everyone why Anderson is considered one of the greatest bowlers in the history of the sport.

The Final Test: England vs. West Indies

Anderson’s magic on Day 2

With England in a commanding position, Anderson opened the bowling on Day 2, determined to make a lasting impact. His first major strike came when he dismissed West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite with a superb inswinger. This was a vintage Anderson delivery, one that left the batter completely flummoxed and reaffirmed Anderson’s mastery over swing bowling.

The Art of swing bowling

Anderson’s ability to swing the ball, both conventionally and reverse, has been a cornerstone of his success. His inswinger to Brathwaite was a perfect example of his skill – the ball dipped low and swung back sharply, deceiving the batter and hitting the stumps.

Second Spell: Anderson’s 703rd wicket

Later in the day, Anderson returned to claim his 703rd Test wicket by dismissing Alick Athanaze. This dismissal further dented the West Indies’ hopes and showcased Anderson’s relentless pursuit of excellence. By the end of Day 2, the West Indies were reeling at 79/6, staring at an innings defeat.

A Star is Born: Atkinson’s debut

While Anderson prepared to bid farewell, another pacer made headlines. Gus Atkinson, a 26-year-old debutant, announced his arrival on the Test stage with a sensational performance. Atkinson’s seven-wicket haul in the first innings of the match was a glimpse into England’s future in fast bowling.

Atkinson’s debut could not have been more impressive. His ability to generate pace and movement troubled the West Indies batters, drawing comparisons with some of the great fast bowlers of the past. His performance ensured that even as Anderson’s career drew to a close, England’s bowling attack remained in capable hands.

A farewell to remember

The atmosphere on Anderson’s last day was charged with emotion. Teammates, opponents, and fans paid tribute to a player who has given so much to the game. Anderson’s farewell was a fitting end to a career that has been characterized by professionalism, passion, and a relentless drive to succeed.

Jamie Smith‘s debut in Test cricket was a mixed bag of success and disappointment. Despite an impressive 70 off 119 balls, the young cricketer found himself in an awkward situation that left a sour taste. Replacing senior wicketkeeper Ben Foakes for the first Test of the English summer, Smith faced the wrath of the London crowd for inadvertently denying James Anderson a chance to bat in his farewell Test against the West Indies at Lord’s.

Jamie Smith’s debut performance and the crowd’s reaction

Smith’s innings showcased his talent and promise at the highest level, but it concluded with a moment of regret. James Anderson, cheered on by the Lord’s crowd, walked out for what was likely his final Test innings. Unfortunately, the West Indies team did not provide a guard of honour, as they were busy celebrating Mikyle Louis’s sensational run-out of Shoaib Bashir.

In the 10th-wicket partnership, the crowd anticipated Anderson to entertain with his batting. However, Smith, while intending to hit a six, got caught at deep fine-leg, leaving Anderson without facing a delivery. This decision was met with disappointment from the crowd, as they missed the opportunity to see Anderson bat one last time. England finished their innings at 371 runs, with a 250-run lead by the second day’s play.

Anderson’s Unbeaten record and bowling brilliance

Although Anderson did not get to bat, he extended his unique Test record of being unbeaten in an innings 114 times, leading the chart over Courtney Walsh (61) and Muttiah Muralitharan (56).

Despite the missed batting opportunity, Anderson gave the crowd plenty to cheer about with his performance with the ball. The veteran pacer claimed two wickets, taking his all-time record tally to 703 wickets by the end of Day 2. His magical delivery to dismiss Kraigg Brathwaite, rattling his stumps, was a highlight that delighted the fans.

James Anderson, one of cricket’s all-time greats, was immediately thrust into action in his final Test match as England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to field against the West Indies at Lord’s on Wednesday. The decision was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd at the ‘Home of Cricket,’ as fans eagerly anticipated watching Anderson excel in his 188th and final Test of a remarkable career spanning two decades.

A record-breaking career

The 41-year-old Anderson, a legend in the sport, holds the record for the most Test wickets taken by a fast bowler, with over 700 to his name. Only India’s Sachin Tendulkar has played more Test matches, with 200 appearances.
