Virat Kohli was involved in controversy during the crucial IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The former Indian captain’s frustration boiled over as a contentious decision cut short his innings, sparking a heated debate among fans and experts alike.

Kohli’s dismissal and his reaction

In the third over of RCB’s innings, Kohli faced a delivery from Harshit Rana, which appeared to be a waist-high full toss. Regarding the delivery, Kohli expressed his displeasure, believing it should have been called a no-ball. However, the on-field umpire’s decision stood, and Kohli, outfoxed by Rana, ended up giving a top edge to the bowler, resulting in his dismissal for 18 runs off seven balls.

Despite opting for a review, Kohli’s fate remained unchanged as the third umpire upheld the on-field decision. The disappointment was palpable as Kohli vented his frustration, questioning the umpire’s call and igniting a fiery exchange of words on the field.

Official Statement

In the match’s aftermath, Kohli was fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct. In an official statement, the IPL confirmed Kohli’s violation of Article 2.8, a Level 1 offence, and emphasized the binding nature of the match referee’s decision.

“Mr Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024,” IPL said in a statement. As per the IPL statement, Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. The former RCB skipper admitted to the offence and accepted the match referee’s sanction. “For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement added.

Analysis of the Decision

The use of Hawk-Eye technology played a pivotal role in analyzing the trajectory of the delivery concerning Kohli’s stance. The TV umpire’s assessment revealed that the delivery would have passed below the batter’s waist had he remained within the popping crease, leading to Kohli’s dismissal.

Commenting on the incident, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis acknowledged the contentious nature of the decision, expressing his and Kohli’s belief that the ball was possibly higher than waist height.

Additionally, the IPL media advisory confirmed that RCB captain Du Plessis was fined for his team’s slow over-rate during the match against KKR, highlighting the importance of maintaining discipline on the field.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced off against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Sunday, aiming to improve their season. RCB captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and chose to bowl. However, an amusing incident occurred during the toss, catching Faf’s attention. The camera zoomed in on the coin, prompting a smile from Faf.

Watch the viral video….

This incident followed a recent controversy during the toss between RCB and Mumbai Indians, where MI captain Hardik Pandya tossed the coin too high, leading to speculation of tampering. Faf discussed the incident with SRH captain Pat Cummins during a previous toss. To address the tampering claims, broadcasters began zooming in on the coin. Faf’s smile during the repeated process hinted at the lighter side of the situation.

RCB make adjustment

In terms of team changes, RCB made three adjustments, bringing in Mohammed Siraj, Cameron Green, and Karn Sharma. KKR, on the other hand, maintained their lineup unchanged.

RCB captain Faf said, “We will chase. This is probably a chasing ground, always has been. I’m a fan of abetting first when it’s really hot, but the temperature did drop after an hour or so yesterday, unlike in Mumbai or Chennai where it stays very hot. The batting is so strong that a general score or 60-70 isn’t considered great. We have three changes – Green and Siraj come back, so does Mayank Dagar. We know if we do a few things back, the momentum can be back and we do have the firepower.”

Shreyas Iyer said, “Last afternoon game here, we know how the wicket plays, we would have loved to bowl as well. It’s stiflingly hot and we’ll look to make them as tired as possible. We’ve tried to keep things simple, it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you end, just stick to the basics. We are playing the same team. It’s important to assess the conditions and execute our plans, then it’ll go in our favour.”

In one of the most gripping encounters of IPL 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru fell agonizingly short by just one run against Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring match. However, the intensity of the game was marred by heated arguments involving RCB’s Virat Kohli and KKR’s Gautam Gambhir with the umpires.

The nail-biting chase saw RCB chasing a mammoth total of 223 runs, creating an atmosphere of excitement and tension. Amidst the thrilling chase, Virat Kohli’s dismissal sparked a heated argument with the umpire, adding to the drama of the match.

But the drama didn’t end there. KKR’s mentor Gautam Gambhir also found himself in a heated discussion with the fourth umpire during the crucial moments of the game. The dispute arose over KKR’s request to substitute spinner Sunil Narine, who was suffering from a toe injury, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz as a fielder for the last two overs. However, the umpire rejected KKR’s plea, leading to Gambhir’s involvement in the argument.

KKR defeat RCB

The match, which kept spectators on the edge of their seats, highlighted the intense competition and the pressure-cooker atmosphere of IPL cricket. Despite the contentious moments, the clash between RCB and KKR showcased the passion and determination of both teams.

“It takes a lot off your body and drains you out completely because you go through so many emotions. It’s tough to stay calm but I’m elated. We got two points on the board and that’s all that matters. It’s extremely tough when the pressure is on, I feel that every individual should put their hands up and take the responsibility,” said Iyer.

“Russell did that by picking up two wickets and completely changed the game in our favor, that kind of attitude is needed in the team. It’s a funny game, when you need 18 runs off 6 balls, the pressure is on the bowler. One six here and there, it completely changes the momentum. It is important that we maintain our calmness and stay in the present and make the batter hit where you want them to hit,” he added.

The ‘Impact Player’ rule in the IPL has sparked controversy after receiving criticism from several players and experts, including Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. This rule, introduced in the IPL in 2023 but not yet part of international matches, has drawn scrutiny for its perceived negative impact on all-rounders.

Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, ahead of the IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, echoed Rohit Sharma’s sentiments by expressing concerns about the rule. Siraj highlighted the already flat surfaces in IPL matches, lamenting the lack of support for bowlers in the competition.

“Please remove this impact sub thing…”

Mohammed Siraj said, “It’s important to be comfortable, if you think too much, it’ll lead to negativity and frustrations, so I always try to be as positive as possible, try to close all negative connotations around me. Please remove this impact sub thing (laughs), the wickets are already flat and there’s nothing for the bowlers in it, previously, it used to be slow at times, but the batters now come out swinging at absolutely everything.”

“My game plan is to be consistent, if a good ball gets hit, so be it. It was a long time that teams made 250+, but it has become such a common feature now (thanks to impact sub and the flat pitches). It’s been a long time since I’ve played a day game, I last played a day game during the Test series against England, but we’re professionals and we have no excuses,” Siraj added.

Earlier Rohit opens up for the rule

“I am not a big fan of Impact sub rule. It is going to hold all rounders back, eventually cricket is played by 11 players not 12 players. You are taking out so much from game to make it entertaining for people around. If you look just from the cricketing aspect of it I feel guys like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar aren’t getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing,” Rohit had said on ‘Club Prairie Fire’ podcast.

“I don’t know what you can do about it. There are 12 players for you, it is entertaining, you can bring on the impact player after watching how the game is going, how the pitch is behaving. If you bat well and you don’t lose wickets, you can add another bowler, it gives you an option of six or seven bowlers. You don’t require that extra batter because a lot of teams are batting well up front and you hardly see a No 7 or No 8 coming to bat,” he had explained.

In a thrilling IPL encounter, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) narrowly edged past Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by a single run, despite a valiant effort from Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar. The match, held on Sunday, witnessed intense drama in the final over, as Karn Sharma’s unexpected assault on Mitchell Starc gave RCB a glimmer of hope.

After KKR set a daunting target of 223 runs, RCB found themselves needing 21 runs off the last over, bowled by left-arm pacer Starc. While the result seemed inevitable, Karn Sharma, known more for his leg-spin than his batting prowess, launched a remarkable counterattack. He smashed three sixes off Starc, bringing the equation down to just three runs off two balls.

However, Starc managed to redeem himself, taking a crucial return catch to dismiss Karn for a quickfire 20 off just 7 balls. With Lockie Ferguson being run out of the last ball, RCB fell agonizingly short, finishing at 222 all out in 20 overs.

Despite Karn’s heroic effort, fans criticized Starc for his performance, suggesting that he should have saved himself from the embarrassment of being hammered for crucial runs in the final over.

In a thrilling IPL showdown, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) suffered a heart-wrenching one-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) despite valiant efforts from Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar. The match, held in Kolkata on Sunday, showcased a gripping battle between bat and ball.

However, their heroic efforts fell short as RCB failed to chase down KKR’s imposing target of 223 runs.

Andre Russell plays on point

Even with a sensational last-over blitz from Karn Sharma, who scored 20 runs off just 7 balls, RCB could only muster a total of 221 all out. KKR’s bowlers, led by Andre Russell with three crucial wickets, along with Sunil Narine and Harshit Rana, proved to be formidable adversaries for the visiting team.

Phil Salt creates a mark with his batting

In the first innings, KKR’s batsmen set the tone with a commanding performance. Opener Phil Salt provided an explosive start, smashing 48 runs off a mere 16 balls, while skipper Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with a composed half-century, scoring 50 runs off 36 deliveries. Contributions from Ramandeep Singh and Andre Russell propelled KKR’s total to a challenging 222/6.

Despite a commendable effort from RCB’s Cameron Green, who claimed two wickets conceding 35 runs, KKR managed to set a daunting target for their opponents. The match was marked by several key moments, including Salt’s aggressive start, Narine’s dismissal, and Iyer’s crucial fifty. However, it was RCB’s narrow miss in the chase that stole the spotlight, as they fell agonizingly short of KKR’s total, ultimately losing by a solitary run.

Key Moments in the Match

The Match saw several key moments, including Phil Salt’s aggressive start to the KKR innings and Sunil Narine’s impactful batting display. Narine’s aggressive batting, coupled with contributions from other KKR players, set the stage for their successful run chase.

RCB’s Innings Highlights

In the first innings, Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 83 and Cameron Green’s quick-fire 33 propelled RCB to post a competitive total of 182/6. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Kohli’s masterful stroke play anchored the innings, supported by contributions from other RCB players.

RCB’s captain, Faf du Plessis, suffered an early dismissal, but the team got off to a strong start, primarily due to Kohli’s performance. Kohli, along with Cameron Green, ensured that RCB scored 61 runs in the powerplay. Kohli continued his excellent form by cruising past a half-century for the second consecutive time this season. The partnership between Kohli and Green ended on 65 off 42 balls when Green fell to Andre Russell after scoring 31 off 21. Subsequently, Glenn Maxwell, Kohli’s Australia teammate, found his form after two poor outings in RCB’s previous two games. However, Maxwell’s luck ran out in the 15th over after he had scored 28 runs off 19 balls.

Harshit Rana and Andre Russell then took charge as KKR managed to restrict RCB in the death overs. They hit 16 runs off the last over from Starc, and Kohli remained unbeaten on 83 off 59 balls. Dinesh Karthik contributed with a quickfire 20 runs off eight balls but was run out off the last ball, bringing an end to RCB’s innings with a score of 182/6.

KKR’s Chase

In response, KKR’s chase was bolstered by a crucial partnership between Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer. Despite early setbacks, KKR’s batsmen showcased resilience and determination, successfully chasing down the target set by RCB.

KKR started off on a rousing note as the opening duo of Philip Salt (30 off 20 balls) and Sunil Narine (47 off 22 balls) added 86 runs in just 6.3 overs. Later, Venkatesh Iyer (50 off 30 balls) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (39 off 24 balls) helped KKR to complete the task with 19 balls remaining for the side’s second win in three games.

KKR’s dominance in the powerplay, particularly the partnership between Phil Salt and Sunil Narine, set the tone for their innings. The aggressive batting from KKR’s openers put RCB under pressure early on and significantly impacted the course of the match. Together they scored 83 runs in powerplay, which provides strong start for KKR.

Virat Kohli’s Batting Masterclass

Virat Kohli was at his best for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL 2024 match on Friday. Continuing his good show in the IPL 2024, Kohli yet again scored a half-century. Kohli brought his fifty in 36 balls whereas other batters, except Green, generally struggled for momentum and timing. But at the other end, Green wasn’t really bothered about such technical angles, as his batting was all about brute power.

Kohli orchestrated a crucial partnership, accumulating 83 runs off 42 balls for the second wicket. His innings were characterized by a diverse range of shots, including drives, lofts, sweeps, and slog-sweeps, showcasing his adaptability and skill. Kohli scored 83 runs on 59 balls. And credit also goes to KKR bowlers like Ankul Roy, who bowled 2 overs and conceded only 6 runs. However, Russell conceded only 29 runs in his quota of 4 overs and bagged one wicket.

KKR openers Phil Salt and Sunil Narine together scored 83 runs in the powerplay. After which, people started trolling Virat Kohli as “chokli” because he scored 83 runs off 59 balls and KKR’s opener scored 83 runs in just 36 balls.

Comparison with Virat Kohli’s Innings

While Narine’s batting was explosive, it is essential to compare it with Virat Kohli’s innings for RCB. Despite Kohli’s skilful fifty, Narine’s aggressive approach provided KKR with the momentum they needed to chase down the target.

Narine’s innings of 47 runs off just 22 balls showcased his ability to score quickly and decisively. His aggressive batting style, coupled with his ability to find boundaries consistently, made him a formidable opponent for the RCB bowlers.

RCB secured their first win against Punjab Kings, while KKR emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With momentum on their side, both teams were determined to maintain their winning streak and produce a compelling performance on the field.

Kohli’s Explosive Start Against KKR

Virat Kohli, often regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of the modern era, has once again showcased his brilliance in the IPL 2024 season.

In a highly anticipated encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Kohli made a stunning impact right from the outset. He wasted no time in asserting his dominance by hitting boundaries and unleashing a vintage bottom-hand flick for a six off Mitchell Starc’s bowling. Kohli’s aggressive approach set the tone for RCB’s innings and put the opposition under pressure.

Kohli’s Consistency

Throughout the match, Kohli exhibited remarkable consistency and composure at the crease. Despite the fall of wickets at regular intervals, Kohli remained unfazed and crafted a well-constructed half-century. RCB captain Faf du Plessis fell early but the hosts managed to get off to a strong start largely thanks to Kohli. He, alongwith Cameron Green, ensured that RCB scored 61 runs in the powerplay. Kohli then cruised past a half-century for the second consecutive time this season. The partnership between the two ended on 65 off 42 balls when Green fell to Andre Russell on 31 off 21.

Virat Kohli shows exceptional class and stays unbeaten on 83 off 59 as RCB put up a target of 183 for KKR to chase at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Shreyas Iyer Opts to Bowl First

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss proved to be crucial in determining the course of the match. The early dismissal of Faf du Plessis by Harshit Rana provided KKR with a vital breakthrough, but RCB remained focused on achieving a formidable total on a batting-friendly pitch.

Kohli’s Milestone: Fourth on the List of Six-Hitters in IPL

In a remarkable milestone, Kohli climbed to the fourth position on the list of batters with the most sixes in IPL history. Surpassing the legendary MS Dhoni’s tally of sixes, Kohli’s achievement symbolizes his relentless pursuit of excellence and his ability to evolve as a batsman. With 237 sixes to his name, Kohli’s feat highlights his remarkable journey in the IPL and his enduring impact on the game.
