Australia debutant Matthew Kuhnemann dismissed Virat Kohli for 44 in the second session of India’s first innings on Saturday. However, the fact that Kohli was given the LBW by umpire Nitin Menon sparked a huge debate as replays showed that Kohli might have hit the ball.

Kohli immediately requested a review and UltraEdge revealed that the ball had a spike because it was wedged between the bat and pad. However, TV umpire Ricahrd Illingworth determined that it was pad first, and as a result of the umpire’s decision, Kohli was required to return to the pavilion.

In the locker room, the replay of his wicket made it clear that Kohli was dissatisfied. Both batting coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathore appeared dissatisfied with the decision made by the umpires.

Wasim Jaffer and Abhinav Mukund, both former cricketers for India, believed Kohli was unlucky to be benched. Law 36.2.2 says that the bat should be considered first if the ball hits both the pad and the bat at the same time. In the meantime, Nathan Lyon, an Australian spinner, took four wickets to keep India at 88/4 at lunch on Day 2 of the second Test.

After bowling Australia out for 263 on the first day, India resumed the game on Saturday with a score of 21-0. They were steadily building their innings before losing four wickets for 20 runs in seven overs as Lyon (4-25) ran through the top order.
