The upcoming 2025 IPL edition will see a Mega Auction with all ten franchises undergoing a significant restructuring. The recent announcement of the retention lists has been a talking point amongst several cricket fanatics, as there has been a mix of both expected and unexpected names getting released.

As it implies, there have been many critics who have got a mixed bag of opinions pertaining to the retained names across all the teams, be it relating to the amount paid for its retention or some shocking releases. That said, here are the five worst retentions made by the teams before the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, based on their performance and price point.

Shimron Hetmyer (Rajasthan Royals- INR 11 Crore)

Shimron Hetmyer, the Caribbean swashbuckling bat for the Rajasthan Royals, made another, despite having international talents like Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Trent Boult on their roster. This is one of the most perplexing retentions by the inaugural champions, considering whether his INR 11 Crore price tag justifies his cricketing abilities.

With colossal options and no Right-to-Match cards available now, it is one of the worst retentions that hasn't given its reasons for staying with the team. In his 2024 stint, he has made just 113 runs in 12 matches, averaging a mediocre 23.

Dhruv Jurel (Rajasthan Royals- INR 14 Crore)

The Rajasthan Royals took an unusual yet brave step by keeping uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel for a whopping INR 14 crore ahead of the IPL 2025. Just to Shimron Hetmyer's retention dilemma, the Royals had a plethora of seasoned and superior combatants at their disposal.

Various critics have questioned Jurel's retention. Though the batter has played an essential part in fortifying his middle order, his price does not appear justified. He has scored just 195 runs in 14 matches for the Rajasthan Royals in 2024, with an average of more than 25.

Mayank Yadav (Lucknow Super Giants- INR 11 Crore)

Mayank Yadav demonstrated his abilities in his first IPL season, becoming a budding star with Lucknow SuperGiants. So, given his quick bowling, the SuperGiants kept him for a staggering INR 11 crore. Typically, if a team pays such a large sum to a fast bowler, it expects him to lead the bowling department. Mayank has all the potential to spearhead LSG's pace battery, but as a hit-the-deck bowler, he is prone to back injuries.

Also, he recently returned from an injury that kept him out of the IPL 2024. With so many possibilities in the big auction pool, the Super Giants might have dragged him back at a lesser price. This deal appears to be motivated by desperation and might have been done more effectively. In his 2024 stint, he has scalped seven wickets at an impeccable economy of less than seven in just four appearances.

Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings- INR 18 Crore)

Ravindra Jadeja, the dependable Indian all-rounder, has been a part of every aspect of the Chennai Super Kings' journey, demonstrating his importance to the Yellove Army. However, given his age and athleticism, his INR 18 crore price tag is quite surprising. Jadeja, a true all-rounder, has recently been sidelined by a problematic knee, which the Super Kings must have known about.

The franchise could have paid Jadeja less, conserving money for the big auction or investing in other youngsters or other promising players on the roster, especially with the likes of Rachin Ravindran, Maheesh Theekshana and Devon Conway. During his 2024 edition spell, he played 14 matches, scoring 267 runs and taking eight wickets.

Yash Dayal (Royal Challengers Bengaluru- INR 5 Crore)

Yash Dayal, the fast-paced player, has been retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 5 crore ahead of the 2025 IPL season. This move created news, especially since the club released its quick stalwart, Mohammed Siraj, making him one of the franchise's mediocre retention choices. The left-arm pacer has experienced a roller coaster ride in the cash-rich league thus far.

Many people believed his career would never recover after Rinku Singh smacked him for five consecutive sixes in the IPL 2023. However, RCB's trust in the left-arm bowler throughout the 2024 season, notably in a vital match against Chennai Super Kings, led to his breakout moment. In the 2024 edition, he took 15 wickets in 14 games.

The Indian Premier League, a veritable breeding ground for cricketing talent, has once again brought a group of promising players to the fore. The just-concluded 2024 edition was a platform for these emerging Indian players, who could potentially bring about a sea change in the national cricket team.

Here’s a rundown of the top five Indian players who, based on their IPL performances, could be on their way to their first international call.

1. Nitish Kumar Reddy (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Sunrisers Hyderabad has uncovered yet another cricketing treasure in the form of Nitish Kumar Reddy, a pace-bowling all-rounder. This sought-after combination frequently piques the curiosity of Indian cricket selection. At the age of 21, Reddy has distinguished himself by his ability to flourish in high-pressure circumstances and guide the innings to a successful completion.

The youngster also won this year’s Emerging Player of the Year title, scoring 303 runs in 15 matches at an average of 33.67. He took three wickets with the ball and had the best bowling stats of 2/17. Nitish played a significant part in enabling the team’s third IPL finale match.

2. Abhishek Sharma (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Having associations since 2019 with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Abhishek Sharma paid back the trust after a memorable cricketing display as the team’s opener. With his opening partner, Travis Head, Sharma has created havoc with the bat by making a sound and aggressive start towards the team’s high-scoring total, with their highest team total of 287/3 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru being one of them.

He has smashed 484 runs in 16 matches, with a strike rate of over 200. As an all-rounder, he also has the potential to turn the ball and scalp some crucial wickets. It would be interesting to see how he performs as an opener when he gets his maiden international call in the future.

3. Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals)

Riyan Parag has been a part of Rajasthan Royals for an extended period, but his performance has gradually declined season by season. With numerous trolls and backlash, Parag gave a befitting reply to such haters with his all-rounding performance in the recent season. He acted as the medium of robust to the team’s middle-order batting and helped in scalping crucial wins for the team.

He emerged as the team’s best run-scorer in IPL 2024, achieving the third-highest total tally with 573 runs at a strike rate of 149.21 throughout 14 innings. With a sophisticated approach and a relaxed attitude, Parag’s proficient tactics have created a lasting impression, which implies that a call-up to the Indian squad may be approaching.

4. Mayank Yadav (Lucknow Super Giants)

Though Mayank Yadav’s IPL career was cut short owing to repeated ailments, the speed phenom made the most of his opportunities while still in the league. Mayank’s blazing speed and pinpoint precision in his maiden match astounded the crowd.

Despite bowling only 12.1 overs in the competition and taking seven wickets with a fantastic economy rate of 6.98, Mayank’s early exit from the IPL 2024 did not herald the end of his career. With his impressive quickness and intriguing talent, he is undoubtedly on selectors’ radar for future possibilities.

5. Shashank Singh (Punjab Kings)

During the 2024 IPL auction, Shashank Singh’s purchase by the Punjab Kings was an atmosphere of confusion and rumours, as the team wanted another player going by the same name. But this purchase turned out to be a masterstroke and made one of the players who might get his India debut call very soon. He became the face of the team’s middle-order lineup.

The batter hit 415 runs in the 14 games he played in the competition this season, with a strike-rate of 161. The effect of his knocks made him a superstar for the Punjab Kings as he came out to bat amid tight moments and won them the game when the team had practically no chance of success.

In the 2024 IPL edition, while the batters stole the show, it’s undeniable that the game was shaped by the impact of the ball. Amidst the high-scoring runs and memorable batting innings, some standout bowling performances significantly influenced the top-notch batting displays.

This article will delve into the top 5 bowling highlights of the 2024 IPL edition, shedding light on the bowlers who made a significant impact.

1. Shahbaz Ahmed (Sunrisers Hyderabad) vs Rajasthan Royals- 3/23

With Sunrisers Hyderabad, a team known for its strong batting attacks and high team scores, the absence of their prime-purchased spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, due to an injury was a significant blow. However, they managed to turn the tide in their Qualifier 2 match against the Rajasthan Royals, a crucial game that would determine their path to the final.

They relied on their part-time and all-rounder spinners to exploit the no-dew and turning pitch conditions. One such standout was Shahbaz Ahmed, who played a crucial role in scalping the Royals’ batting order wickets. With an economy of a mere 5.75 and having spin-handy support of Abhishek Sharma, they have triumphed a win over the Royals by 36 runs and made their way to their third IPL final.

2. Matheesha Pathirana (Chennai Super Kings) vs Mumbai Indians- 4/28

The Impact Player rule has been in action since the 2023 IPL edition, and it has stirred a lot of controversies among cricket fanatics and the experienced sports fraternity. Still, this bowling highlight is a prime example of how this rule changes the game’s dynamics.

When Chennai Super Kings set up a target of 207 against a swashbuckling Mumbai Indians batting order, Super Kings’ Pathirana displayed his pace skills and flummoxed Mumbai Indians batting order by scalping four wickets of just 28 runs, with a commendable economy of seven runs. This performance earned him the title of Man of the Match.

3. Mitchell Starc (Kolkata Knight Riders) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad- 3/34

When the top Australian pacer, Mitchell Starc, was bought for a colossal INR 24.5 Crore, making him the most expensive player in the tournament’s history, many critics gave their words on the costly and unnecessary purchase.

But during the Qualifier-1 match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Starc proved his calibre of why he’s the best in the business with his crucial performance during the game by scalping major wickets of the robust Sunrisers Hyderabad batting lineup, by taking three wickets of just 34 runs, at an economy of 8.5, with the swing and pace with the new ball being the highlight.

4. Mayank Yadav (Lucknow Super Giants) vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru- 3/14

IPL has been a breeding ground for young and emerging cricketing talent, domestic or foreign players. With this season witnessing several promising domestic talents, one such talent arises from the pace bowling department. Mayank Yadav is one of the elements of Lucknow Super Giants’ young-blooded and emerging bowling attack, where his bowling speed has done the talking.

His first-ever IPL delivery clocked at a fiery pace of 147 mph, with other deliveries clocking at 155.8 mph. The speed gun displayed his pace and wicket-taking abilities in his second IPL match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he had scalped three wickets at an astonishing economy of 3.5, leading the team to a 28-run win and earning his first-ever MOM award. Though his injury sidelined him for the majority of the season, he has a bright future ahead and is getting a chance to get his maiden international call.

5. T Natarajan (Sunrisers Hyderabad) vs Delhi Capitals- 4/19

Hailed as the Yorker King, T Natarajan has been a valuable asset for the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a long period and has been vital in scalping pivotal wickets. This match acts as one such instance. Giving a colossal target of 267 runs against a powerful batting order of Delhi Capitals, T Natarajan provided some unplayable deliveries.

He took a triple-wicket maiden over in his final over, summing up his quality pace attack. There is a noteworthy mention of T Natarajan being the team’s highest wicket-taker and the tournament’s fourth-highest wicket-taker (19 wickets).

Mayank Yadav, the Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) pacer, is facing a setback in IPL 2024 as he is set to miss the remainder of the tournament due to injury. Despite hopes for a potential return in the playoffs, the situation remains uncertain, adding to the challenges for the player and his team.

Head Coach Justin Langer’s Insights

LSG’s head coach, Justin Langer, provided insights into Mayank’s injury and the team’s outlook moving forward. While expressing optimism for Mayank’s recovery, Langer acknowledged the harsh reality of the situation, indicating that it might be challenging for the young bowler to return for the latter stages of the tournament.

Head coach Justin Langer said: “No, we’ll be praying that he can play, hopefully, in the playoffs, but I’m a realist as well. It’ll be probably difficult for him to get up for the back-end of the tournament. He’s had a scan. He’s got a small tear in a similar area to where his last one was. So it’s very unfortunate.”

The severity of Mayank’s Injury

Mayank’s injury, as revealed by Langer, involves a small tear in a similar area to his previous injury, casting doubt over his immediate return to action. Despite the positive signs during his rehabilitation, the setback is disheartening for both Mayank and LSG, considering his impact when he returned to the field earlier in the tournament.

Head coach further stated, “He’s got huge potential. But his rehabilitation was excellent. He went into the game [against MI], had a couple of bowls before the game. He was completely pain free. So it’s very sad for him and it’s disappointing for LSG as well that he might [not[ play the rest of the tournament.”

Mayank Yadav’s Performance in IPL 2024

Mayank had burst onto the scene this IPL with returns of 3 for 27 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and 3 for 14 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), regularly hitting 155kph and making batters hop. He won the Player-of-the-Match award in both games. In his third game, against Gujarat Titans (GT), he bowled only one over before going off and sat out five games before returning against MI. But unfortunately he left the field in his last game after having bowled just 3.1 overs against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday.

Mayank Yadav, the young fast-bowling sensation, faces uncertainty after sustaining an injury during the IPL 2024 match against MI, casting doubt on his participation for the remainder of the season.

Injury Details

Mayank’s comeback game turned sour when he suffered a suspected abdominal strain while bowling against MI. This injury, compounded by his history of setbacks, raises concerns about his availability for the rest of the IPL season.

“Mayank has a tear but it is more likely a Grade 1 tear. It will be cutting it fine but in case LSG qualifies for the play-offs. He might just be able to play the knock-out games. But it is like hoping against hope and right now he is doubtful for the remaining IPL games,” a BCCI source informed PTI on condition of anonymity.

Skipper Rahul’s Statement

KL Rahul, captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), expressed concern over Mayank’s injury, emphasizing the need to prioritize his well-being. Despite the setback, Rahul commended Mayank’s performance on the field.

“I haven’t spoken to Mayank much. He had some pain in his sides. He said thoda dukh raha hai. So, I asked him to go out. He is useful for us. We need to take care of him. He bowled wide yorkers and slower bumpers today which was good to see. We are giving him a free hand,” Rahul said.

Potential Fast-Bowling Contract

Despite the setback, there is a silver lining for Mayank as reports suggest he will likely receive a fast-bowling contract, underscoring his impact in the few matches he played for LSG in IPL 2024. While Mayank’s injury casts doubt on his immediate future, there remains hope for his recovery and potential participation in the playoffs if LSG qualifies.

Mayank made a strong impression in IPL 2024, delivering stellar performances against Punjab Kings and RCB, consistently clocking over 150 KPH and earning accolades for his speed and accuracy.

National Cricket Academy’s Supervision

The proposed contract will involve Mayank under the supervision of the National Cricket Academy’s Sports Science and Medical team, ensuring his injury management and fitness program are handled professionally.

The BCCI’s involvement signifies its commitment to nurturing young talent like Mayank and ensuring their gradual integration into the national setup while prioritizing their fitness and long-term career prospects.

“He will soon be handed a pace bowling contract and once he is in BCCI Pathways structure, his growth will be systematically monitored. The national selection committee and the Indian team management would like to gradually blood him and ensure that he can maintain peak fitness,” the BCCI source added.

Lucknow Super Giants pulled off an impressive victory against the Mumbai Indians by chasing down a target of 145 runs. This win was crucial for Lucknow as it strengthened their position on the points table.

The match started with Mumbai Indians batting first after losing the toss. However, they faced early trouble, losing wickets quickly and struggling at 28/4 during the powerplay phase. It seemed Lucknow’s bowlers were dominating the game, particularly Mohsin Khan.

Mayank Yadav makes comeback with amazing performance

However, Mumbai Indians managed to stabilize their innings with a partnership between Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera. By the halfway mark, they had reached 57/4, thanks to their efforts. However, Mayank Yadav also gave amazing bowling performances that took the heart.

Towards the end of their innings, Tim David’s explosive hitting and Wadhera’s steady batting helped Mumbai reach a competitive total of 144/7. Despite the tough bowling from Lucknow, especially Mohsin Khan’s impressive performance, Mumbai put up a fight.

Marcus Stoinis and KL Rahul’s partnership bring the win

In response, Lucknow’s innings began with a setback when Arshin Kulkarni was dismissed early by Nuwan Thushara. However, Marcus Stoinis and KL Rahul built a strong partnership, hitting boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Though Mumbai tried to break through, Hardik Pandya managed to dismiss Rahul and Deepak Hooda. Stoinis, the star of the match, played a crucial innings, but Mohammad Nabi got him out eventually.

As the match progressed, Lucknow lost a few more wickets, but Stoinis’ half-century had already laid a solid foundation. Even though Mumbai tried hard to defend their total, Lucknow’s balanced batting lineup ensured they secured a win with four wickets in hand and four balls remaining.

However, amidst the celebrations, there was a moment of concern for Lucknow when Mayank Yadav had to leave the field due to an injury scare. Mayank, known for his pace, had returned to the team after missing several games due to injury. His absence would have been felt, but Lucknow managed to overcome this hurdle and clinch a memorable victory on home ground.

Mayank Yadav, the express pace bowler for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), encountered another injury scare during IPL 2024 while playing against the Mumbai Indians.

Mayank Yadav’s Injury

Mayank walked off the field after bowling an incomplete fourth over, signaling an injury concern. He had sent down 3.1 overs, conceding 31 runs and taking one wicket before leaving the field. This injury possibly aggravated the same spot that had sidelined him for five games earlier due to abdominal soreness.

Prior History

Before this setback, Mayank had only played three matches in IPL 2024 due to the previous injury. LSG captain KL Rahul mentioned that Mayank complained of pain in his side after delivering the first ball of his fourth over. Consequently, the decision was made not to risk aggravating his condition further.

Post-Match Assessment

LSG head coach Justin Langer expressed concern about Mayank’s injury, mentioning that despite his perfect rehabilitation and pain-free bowling in the past week, the soreness persisted. The team plans to conduct a scan to assess the extent of the injury.

“Looks like he is sore in the same spot. His rehab has been perfect, he bowled pain-free in the last week and looked in great condition. But we’ll have a scan and find out tomorrow,” LSG head coach Justin Langer said after the game.

Mayank’s Performance

Mayank showcased remarkable talent in his initial IPL matches, earning the Player-of-the-Match awards in games against Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite limited experience in domestic cricket, he impressed with his pace and effectiveness on the field.

During the match against Mumbai Indians, Mayank bowled aggressively, consistently crossing the 150km mark. His first delivery struck Nehal Wadhera’s helmet, displaying his raw pace. However, after completing three overs, he left the field, with Naveen-ul-Haq taking over for the remaining balls of his over.

Despite not showing visible discomfort initially, Mayank was substituted as the Impact Player at the innings break. This decision aimed to prevent further aggravation of his injury and ensure the team’s well-being.

<![CDATA[IPL 2024: Klusener is not sure about Mayank Yadav's comeback to LSG]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2024-klusener-is-not-sure-about-mayank-yadavs-comeback-to-lsg/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2024-klusener-is-not-sure-about-mayank-yadavs-comeback-to-lsg/ Fri, 19 Apr 2024 08:10:20 GMT

Mayank Yadav’s future with LSG remains uncertain as the team awaits his return. The young pace sensation has been making headlines in the ongoing IPL 2024, notably delivering the fastest ball of the tournament at a staggering 156.7 kmph.

Despite his promising start, Yadav’s journey has hit a roadblock due to a side strain, causing him to miss the team’s recent matches. Assistant coach Lance Klusener expressed apprehension about Yadav’s fitness, emphasizing the team’s cautious approach towards his recovery.

Klusener opens up about Yadav’s fitness

While Yadav has shown progress in training, with videos surfacing of him bowling in the nets, Klusener refrained from confirming his immediate return to the playing XI. “I am not sure regarding his participation in tomorrow’s match against Chennai. He has been bowling in the nets, but his fitness is our priority,” he added.

Amidst the uncertainty, former Australian cricketer Tom Moody believes Yadav could still be in contention for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad later in the year.

Moody said, “He is definitely in the conversation. Whether you take that risk punting on him or not is another conversation because you also need to consider what skillset you need in that reserve fast bowler – is it someone who is a powerplay bowler, or someone who has the ability to bowl at the death, all those subtle skillsets are important when you are talking about a T20 World Cup.”

Uncertainty looms over Yadav’s return

Mitchell McClenaghan, former New Zealand bowler, echoed similar sentiments regarding Mayank Yadav’s potential inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad. McClenaghan emphasized the significance of Yadav’s form in the IPL 2024, highlighting the proximity of the World Cup, which begins just six days after the IPL concludes. McClenaghan stressed the importance of considering players in top form for such major tournaments, regardless of their previous international experience.

He acknowledged Yadav’s remarkable performance, winning two consecutive games for his team in the IPL, and suggested that if Yadav maintains his form and continues delivering match-winning performances, he could certainly be in contention for a spot in the national squad. While acknowledging that it might be a long shot, McClenaghan emphasized the unpredictability of cricket and the potential for emerging players to make a significant impact on the global stage.

In the fast-paced world of the Indian Premier League (IPL), player fitness and team strategy play crucial roles in steering a team toward victory. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), one of the formidable teams in the league, find themselves at a crossroads as they navigate through the challenges posed by injuries to key players, especially their fast bowler, Mayank Yadav. On the eve of their next fixture against the Delhi Capitals, head coach Justin Langer shared insights that put the spotlight on the team’s immediate future without Yadav.

Mayank Yadav’s Recent Performance and Injury

Mayank Yadav, known for his pace and precision, has been a vital asset to the Lucknow Super Giants’ bowling lineup. His recent performances have not only garnered praise but have also raised expectations for the team’s prospects in the IPL 2024 season.

However, during LSG’s clash with the Gujarat Titans, Yadav’s game was cut short as he walked off the field after bowling just one over. The diagnosis: “soreness in the lower abdominal area,” a concern that has put his participation in the next two games in doubt.

“He felt a little bit of tightness at the top of his hip leading into the last game, but that was about a one-out-of-ten pain, and we thought that there were clinical signs. Everything through the doctors and the physios seemed perfectly okay. He bowled that first over [against Titans] and started feeling something in his hip. But we had an MRI scan, and there is a very, very small swelling in there. So we are very hopeful he’ll start building himself up and be back bowling again soon.” Langer said in a press conference on Thursday.

Justin Langer’s Take on the Situation

Head coach Justin Langer, in a recent press conference, shed light on Yadav’s condition and the team’s plan moving forward. Langer revealed that despite Yadav feeling a slight discomfort before the game against the Titans, the medical team had given him the green light to play.

Unfortunately, the discomfort escalated, leading to an MRI that revealed a minor swelling. Langer’s optimism about Yadav’s swift recovery and return to the bowling lineup underscores the fast bowler’s importance to the team’s strategic framework.

Langer further added, “That’s the plan [to have Mayank fit for the match against Chennai Super Kings on April 19]. We want him to play every game if possible. But he’ll be working towards it; he’s working very hard every day to be ready for whatever our next game is. He won’t play tomorrow; it’s unlikely… with the very short turnaround, it’s unlikely that he plays these two games. But he’s certainly working towards playing whenever he possibly can.”

Mayank Yadav, the rising star of the Lucknow Super Giants in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, is facing a setback due to an injury. Known for his remarkable pace and promising talent, Yadav’s absence will be felt in the upcoming matches.

Statement from Lucknow Super Giants CEO

Colonel Vinod Bisht, CEO of Lucknow Super Giants, addressed the situation, stating that Yadav experienced soreness in the lower abdominal area. As a precautionary measure, the team is managing his workload for the next week, aiming for his swift return to the field.

“Mayank felt soreness in lower abdominal area and as a precaution we are managing his work load over next week. We hope to see him soon in the field,” CEO of Lucknow Super Giants Colonel Vinod Bisht said in a statement on Monday.

Impact on Matches Against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders

Unfortunately, Yadav’s injury sidelines him for the crucial matches against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders scheduled on April 12 and April 14, respectively. His absence will be a blow to the team’s bowling lineup, considering his recent form and contributions.

In the recent encounter against GT, Mayank Yadav’s performance was subpar as he bowled only one over, conceding 13 runs. His subdued intent and slower bowling speed, clocking under 138 kmph, raised doubts about his fitness.
