India's chances of making it to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final are almost gone, and the fifth Test, against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, is vitally important. Rohit Sharma, the team's captain, is at a major moment in his career today. Rohit Sharma's ability to make some tough calls to strengthen the group, especially after losing the Boxing Day Test by 184 runs.

The choice of players for the playing XI for the Sydney Test is going to cause many discussions.

Shubman Gill's Comeback

Team management had to explain their decision to Shubman Gill about why they didn't pick him for the Melbourne match. They did it to make sure the group was equal but considering his stats, it's a hard choice to ignore him. In 2024, Gill achieved up 866 runs, only sitting behind Yashasvi Jaiswal among Indian batters, placing him firmly as the second-best.

Gill really seems to have a strong argument to rejoin the team, despite being sidelined for that game.

Rohit's Balancing Act

Now, Rohit really needs to think through how to include Gill in the team without messing up everything. Since the Sydney pitch usually helps spinners, having Washington Sundar team with Ravindra Jadeja appears like a sharp and informed move. But, if Rohit decides to leave out a spinner to make room for Gill, the team's bowling might not be as strong unless Yashasvi Jaiswal can actually do a decent job with his occasional leg-spin.

Dropping one of the quick bowlers, Mohammed Siraj who performed well in Sydney, or Akash Deep who isn't taking wickets easily, is another choice. But, making this change would mean the team's left with only two main quick bowlers. In a game they must win, that's a major risk.

Should Rohit Take a Step Back?

Rohit quitting could make space for Gill, and then KL Rahul, who can be trusted, could open again. In Rohit's last five games, he obtained just 31 runs, and in total, 155 runs in 14 games.

This kind of decision would demand significant leadership from Rohit, demonstrating his commitment to prioritizing the team over personal interests.

A True Test of Leadership

The Sydney Test is not only another game. It's really key for India because it could help them qualify for the World Test Championship final. Also, it's a major situation for looking at how good of a leader Rohit Sharma is. No matter what choices he chooses to make, like changing the plan of action or even giving something up himself, it's going to show what captain he is.This might change how things go for India in this vitally important match.

A Memorable New Year's Celebration: Indian and Australian Cricket Teams Attend Prime Minister's Party

As the cricketing world gears up for the final game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Friday, the Indian and Australian teams took a brief respite from the action to attend a grand New Year's party hosted by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Held at the picturesque Kirribilli House in Sydney on Wednesday, the celebration lasted for about 90 minutes, blending cricket, camaraderie, and humor.

At the event, Albanese showed up with his fiancée Jodie Haydon and had some fun by telling funny stories. He really couldn't help making jokes about Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian bowler who's been a strikingly large problem for the Aussie hitters, getting 30 wickets already in the series. Albanese is known to have a pretty sharp sense of humor, and he made sure to share a cheerful moment with the players while he was there.

The crowd thought it was very amusing when the Prime Minister joked that Bumrah was so proficient at cricket, that they may potentially have to make him bowl with his left hand, or only let him take one step before he threw. Everyone really enjoyed the enjoyable event the prime minister brought.

Sam Konstas' Big Moment

At the party, Sam Konstas had a great tim

e when he was able to snap a photo with Virat Kohli, his cricket idol. Everyone knows about Konstas lately because he's been performing well in Australian cricket, especially after scoring a century in the Prime Minister's XI game, and another marvelous 60 runs at the MCG. This was very important for him since there was a nervous moment between him and the legendary Kohli before.

Konstas is a bright light that everyone at the party was noticing.

During the series, there was an incident on the field between them, and because of it, Kohli got his match fee cut by 20% and also obtained a demerit point but it looks like all their hard feelings were gone at the party. Konstas' parents were even able to have a photo taken with Bumrah, which was wonderful, owing to it showed everyone was just there to enjoy themselves and celebrate the event.

Words of Wisdom from Team Leaders

Gautam Gambhir, the Indian head coach, took over for Rohit Sharma and spoke to everyone. First thing, he tipped his hat to Australia for playing so well and making things tough. Even though he didn't say much about how the series might end up, he was focused on India trying very hard to make sure the last test is really fun. Gambhir knows it's not easy playing in Australia, and he said as much.

Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, is extremely excited after the Melbourne Test match. Cummins thinks it was probably the most intense and dramatic game he's ever played, taking an entire five days full of struggle. Since Australia is leading the series 2-1, Cummins is eager to win the last match and keep the series trophy.

Ravi Shastri Calls for Two-Tier Test System Post MCG Epic

Former India cricket coach Ravi Shastri has reiterated his stance on the need for a two-tier system in Test cricket. Shastri's comments come after the historic Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) drew record-breaking crowds. Over five days, a total of 373,691 spectators attended the match, setting a new benchmark for Test cricket in Australia.

A Test for the Ages

The match at the MCG triumphed in the exciting environment, or world, of cricket lovers, really showing why the classic five-day match is still spectacular. Shastri took to The Australian to point out how amazing Test cricket match was, especially when top teams go head-to-head, proving the game's still doing very well.

"To break crowd records that have stood for nearly a century is a testimony to the fact that when the best teams play, the toughest and best format of the game is still alive and thriving," wrote Shastri.

Advocating for Two Tiers

The ex-coach really thinks Test cricket needs to change to stay both competitive and appealing worldwide. He came up with an idea for a two-tier system that puts the best six to eight teams in a top division. Teams that do well in the second division could move up, and the teams that aren't performing very well in the top division could be dropped down.

Shastri said you must have the best 6 or 8 teams play in a two-tier system, where teams can go higher or lower based on how they do. He reckons games won't pull in large groups unless the teams playing against each other are really good.

The Five-Day Debate

Shastri was into keeping test matches five days long. He didn't agree with making them four days just to attract more people to watch. He used the silly ending of the MCG test as proof that five days are the way to go. Shastri had his say on whether test matches should be shorter or not during the entire debate.

"The MCG Test is further proof of why we need five days for a classic Test match," he said.

Revisiting the Two-Tier Proposal

In 2016, the International Cricket Council (ICC) came up with a plan to have a two-tier system for Test cricket but a large number of cricket boards didn't enjoy it and said no, so it was completely stopped. Some people didn't like the idea because they thought it would leave out the weaker teams and stop cricket from becoming popular worldwide.

Shastri thinks that if only the top players compete at the highest level, test cricket would be significantly more interesting for fans. This setup means teams in the second tier would really want to do better to move up the rankings.

A Vision for the Future

Cricket's oldest and most impressive form, Test cricket, is currently facing tough rivals mainly those short and quick T20 matche but there's a push to keep it popular and relevant. Shastri threw out an idea to help with this mission, working to keep Test cricket strong as part of a larger plan.

For people who really love cricket, the MCG test that broke records showed the special characteristics that only test cricket can give. Wanting to make sure the fun stays, Shastri wants to introduce a two-tier system to make sure test cricket stays key in the sport for a long time.

The third umpire in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Sharfuddoula Saikat, raised eyebrows with his decisions in the match that was played on Day 5 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The 48-year-old Bangladeshi umpire made a wrong decision when India’s opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal was given out caught behind though there was no spike on the snickometer.

On the final day of the fourth test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, when Yashasvi Jaiswal got dismissed, it was essentially the moment that sealed the win for Australia, since the match finished dramatically, with a lot of controversies. Jaiswal had a good innings, making 84 runs from 208 balls, and it looked like India could manage a draw to push the series into a final match in Sydney but then, India broke down in the last session, and Australia won an important game by 184 runs, moving ahead 2-1 in the series.

The left-handed batter got into a conflict when he tried to hit a ball down the leg side from Pat Cummins and ended up being caught by Alex Carey. At first, umpire Joel Wilson said he wasn't out but then Cummins did not agree and asked for a review. The review got passed to another umpire from Bangladesh named Sharfuddoula Saikat. When they looked at the replay, you could definitely see the ball brush against Jaiswal's gloves. Although, what was abnormal was when they checked the monitor, it didn't show any spikes or sudden changes, which was unexpected

Snicko doesn't match visual feedback

Sharfuddoula saw something strange with Jaiswal's glove and an unusual change in how the ball moved, so he didn't simply go with what the evidence showed. Instead, he looked at more camera angles. He told Wilson to change his original decision because he spotted a dent on Jaiswal's glove, along with how abnormal the ball's path looked, even though the evidence didn't show any obvious hit.

Jaiswal was understandably upset and tried to reason with the umpires, but Wilson and his colleague Michael Gough stood by the decision, marking the beginning of the end for India as it broke apart their last solid batting partnership.

The good part is, Sharfuddoula is going to be the umpire in the final test at the SCG too. People have really noticed how intelligent and informed he is when making decisions because he seems to have a good gut feeling regarding them. He's not new to this at all he's been an umpire in 130 international games, with 15 of those being test matches and he's been the TV umpire 67 times. This experience makes him one of the umpires who's been around the scene for quite a while, knowing his material in cricket.

Irfan Pathan Expresses Disappointment with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has been outspoken about his thoughts on the performances of key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in recent matches, especially in the Test series against Australia. Pathan highlighted that these players failed to meet the expectations placed on them, especially during crucial moments in the series. He mentioned how their underwhelming performances had an impact on the team's overall results, reflecting his concern about their form.

“A player who has made about 20,000 runs—yet the way Rohit is struggling now, it seems his form is not supporting him at all. What’s happening now is that he is the captain, so he is playing. If he were not the captain, he might not be playing right now. You would have had a set team. K.L. Rahul would have been playing at the top. Jaiswal would have been there. Shubman Gill would have been there. If we talk about reality, considering how he is struggling with the bat, there might not have been a place for him in the playing XI.”

Controversial Debate Between Pathan and Manjrekar

Irfan Pathan was also involved in a heated discussion with fellow cricket analyst Sanjay Manjrekar regarding a controversial run-out involving Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The two former cricketers had a difference of opinion, which escalated into a heated argument during their debate on air. This incident drew attention, as both analysts are known for their candid commentary, but this spat reflected deeper frustrations about team selections and on-field decisions.

Comments on Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma's Leadership

In a separate conversation, Pathan expressed dissatisfaction with Hardik Pandya’s performances, along with remarks on Rohit Sharma's leadership. He discussed the challenges of managing expectations when captains and key players fail to perform in critical situations. Though Pathan has always been a strong advocate for Indian cricket, his comments reflected a sense of frustration with the state of affairs in the team, particularly regarding leadership and individual performances.

These instances illustrate Pathan's direct approach when analyzing Indian cricket, showing his willingness to speak his mind about players and leadership without hesitation.

If you're looking for more detailed information, I would recommend checking major sports news outlets like Business Standard, Republic World, or other cricket-specific platforms where these discussions have been elaborated in articles.

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal created a new history in Australia after scoring 80+ runs in both innings of the Melbourne Test.

While most of the Indian batters have struggled in the ongoing Australia tour, Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who just celebrated his 23rd birthday last Saturday (December 28), has impressed with his confident batting in this series despite some early dismissals.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century in the Perth Test

Opener Jaiswal scored 161 runs during India’s second innings of the Test series opener at Perth Stadium (Perth), where India won by 295 runs. Although he scored only one double-digit score in the next four Test innings of this tour (24), Jaiswal impressed in the tough Melbourne Test with his two 80+ scores.

Jaiswal scored 82 and 84 runs in Melbourne Test

In reply to Australia’s first innings total of 474 runs in the Melbourne Test, Jaiswal scored 82 runs in India’s first innings. Chasing down the 340-run target in the fourth innings of the Test match, Jaiswal once again proved his caliber to perform in a challenging situation and scored fighting 84 runs.

To achieve this record, Jaiswal even broke the Australian record. While he started the Test match at the age of 22 years and 364 days and ended it at the age of 23 years and 2 days, Jasiwal set a new record for the youngest player to score 80+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia.

Former Australian cricketer Doug Walters was the previous record holder with 242 and 103 during the 1969 Sydney Test against West Indies, while he started the Test match at the age of 23 years and 55 days.

Youngest Indian batter to score 50+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia

The 23-year-old Jaiswal became the youngest Indian batter to score 50+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia. Virat Kohli was the previous record holder when the 26-year-old scored 115 and 141 runs in the 2014 Adelaide Test.

Third youngest among the overall visitors

Meanwhile, after the 20-year-old Bangladesh cricketer Hannan Sarkar (76 and 55 in the 2003 Cairns Test) and the 22-year-old South African Roy McLean (81 and 76* in the 1953 Melbourne Test), Jaiswal became the third-youngest visiting batter to record 50+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia.

Only Indian opener to score 80+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia

Jaiswal was the fourth Indian opener to score 50+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia. However, the young left-handed batter was the first among them to score 80+ runs in both innings of a Test match in Australia.

Rohit Sharma on Rishabh Pant: "He Needs to Figure Out the Right Way to Do Things"

India's captain, Rohit Sharma, noted how Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batter, plays the game with high risk, after a major loss in the Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Rohit pointed out that, even though Pant has been a major help to the team before, it's important for him to mix his natural way of playing with what the team needs at the moment.

Pant got out in both innings of the game, and people weren't happy with the manner he chose his shots attempting to hit the ball over the fielders off Scott Boland, he was caught by a fielder far away at third in the first innings, only scoring 28 runs from 37 balls then, in the second innings, after hitting a ball that bounced high from Travis Head straight to a fielder far away on the grass, he was out for 30 off 104 balls. When India was trying hard to tie the game, Pant's exit was a major issue because it ended a strong partnership he had going with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Rohit's Mixed Reactions to Pant's Approach

Rohit shared with the reporters after the trade, it has only just taken place; we haven't discussed it yet. We are unhappy because we didn't win, and the manner things turned out but what Rishabh Pant really needs to do is understand what's expected of him. Instead of us all pointing it out, he must work out the best approach for himself.

The Indian captain highlighted the duality of Pant's playing style, which has often been a double-edged sword for the team. "In the past, he has given us a lot of success doing what he does. As a captain, there's a kind of mixed reaction to that. Sometimes you want to back that thought of him playing the way he plays, and sometimes when things don't look good, it frustrates everyone. That is what it is, that's the reality," Rohit explained.

He discussed how it's key to understand the industry situation and to weigh the risks. You must deal with winning and losing - keeping it balanced is important. Being a captain, it's tough to converse regarding this material when you've also seen a large amount of success from it. But, thinking through the complexities of the best approach is on him. It also depends on the trade's specific moments. When there's a chance of something going wrong, do you risk it? Or do you make a careful choice so the other team doesn't get a chance to catch up? He must decide that on his own.

Gavaskar's Criticism

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was among those who criticized Pant's shot selection. Gavaskar was particularly unhappy with Pant's dismissal in the first innings, where he holed out to deep third while attempting a scoop, a risky shot given the match context.

"That was not the shot to play at that time," Gavaskar said during commentary, adding that Pant's approach put unnecessary pressure on the team, especially when they needed stability.

Pant's Potential and the Way Forward

Rohit acknowledged Pant's talent and match-winning ability, but stressed the need for introspection and adaptability. "I've known Rishabh for a long time, [I] understand his cricket as well. In terms of conversations, no way I can say I've not had a chat with him or he doesn't understand what the team expects. He understands that. But things that he does give him results as well - it's just the fine line between telling him not to do those things or telling him to do those things."

India's collapse on the final day - losing seven wickets in the last session to be bowled out for 155 - highlighted the importance of game awareness and calculated risk-taking, especially from senior players like Pant. While his fearless batting has turned games in India's favor before, the challenge lies in channeling that aggression judiciously.

While Australia and India are fighting in the thrilling Melbourne Test, the former cricketers are busy bringing their experienced minds to make the game more interesting. On the final day of the Melbourne Test, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar sparked controversy when Scott Boland was busy delivering his first over of the fourth innings of the match.

Hosts Australia set a big fourth innings target of 340 runs for India in the Melbourne Test. While the baggy greens needed ten wickets to win the match and put the five-match Test series position at 2-1 in their favour, the visitors needed to draw the Test match to continue their series victory hope.

Jaiswal and Pant kept patience after the first wickets fell cheaply

After India lost their first three wickets of the fourth innings of the Melbourne Test for only 33 runs, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant controlled the situation with their patient batting.

India scored 112/3 at the tea break of the fifth day of the Melbourne Test. The visitors didn’t lose a wicket in that second session, where Jaiswal scored 63 runs not out and Pant scored 28 runs not out.

The Melbourne Test has reached the thrilling fifth day, where the hosts Australia are desperate to secure the series by winning it, and the visitors India are slowly looking to the draw result. While Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was frustrating the hosts along with Rishabh Pant, Aussie left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc brought the bail-switching trick.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 is in an interesting position as the series is level at 1-1 before the last day of the ongoing fourth Test in Melbourne. Thanks to late partnerships in their second innings, Australia set a challenging 340-run fourth innings target for the visitors India in the Melbourne Test.

In the fourth innings of the Melbourne Test, the visitors India lost their first three wickets for just 33 runs. In a troubled situation, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant were handling the situation very calmly.

While Jaiswal frustrated the Aussies as the 22-year-old became a strong wall for the hosts’ victory, the left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc brought the bail-switching trick, which the Indian players have done in their tricky period in recent Test matches.

After Starc switched the bails off the wickets in the non-striker end, the non-striker end batter Jaiswal brought back the bails in their previous positions.

Marnus Labuschagne lost his wicket after bail-switch tricks in the Brisbane Test

In this Test series, we have already seen one lucky bail-switching moment for Team India, where Mohammed Siraj switched the bail and Marnus Labuschagne switched back those bails during the second day of the Brisbane Test. In the very next over, Nitish Kumar Reddy took Labuschagne’s wicket as the former Indian captain Virat Kohli grabbed a good catch at slip.

At the tea of the fifth day of the Melbourne Test, India were battling at 112/3, where Jaiswal was not out at 63 runs off 159 balls and Pant was not out at 28 off 93 balls.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's Fighting 50 Keeps India in the Hunt at MCG

Yashasvi Jaiswal did an amazing job taking care of things against Australia in their Test series, hitting his second 50 in a row at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Despite usually playing very intensely in the game, now he paused a bit, taking 127 balls to reach his 50. Jaiswal really stayed with patience and kept going through the tough times, which isn't what you'd expect from him since he's characterized by that aggressive batting. By hitting 7 great boundaries, he made the Australian bowlers very upset. Jaiswal's intelligent and informed play could mean India still has a chance to win the game, which was looking pretty intense.

Jaiswal somehow managed to stay calm against the tough Australian bowlers, especially with Mitchell Starc approaching toward him hard. Even though he had to dodge and miss clearly 17 times, it showed how intense the pressure was--but he got lucky too, especially when an lbw call that could have made him leave the field wasn't given.

Because of that, he remained and scored 50 more runs. This half-century was his slowest yet, even slower than the one where he took 123 balls in Perth. That just goes to show: even when things are utterly tough and difficult, and it appears as if everything's against you, a little bit of luck and not giving up can make a major difference.

Jaiswal hit over 50 runs in the second innings, which was of significant consequence not simply for him but it also greatly aided India in their series. By doing this, he took the spot as India's top run-getter in the current test series against Australia, achieving up 321 runs across four games. This means he's scoring runs at an average of 53 per match. He even achieved a remarkable 161 runs in just his second time at bat in Perth. Throughout the series, his steady performance while batting has been vitally important for India.

Earlier in the first innings at the MCG, Jaiswal had scored a classy 82 runs before being run out following a mix-up with Virat Kohli. Despite the unfortunate dismissal, his solid contribution added to his growing reputation as one of India's promising young talents in international cricket.
