In the 12th match of IPL 2025, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced off against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium. MI came out victorious, winning by 8 wickets. MI was stellar with the ball, and when it came time to bat, easily met the target.

KKR Innings: Struggles Against MI's Bowling Attack

  • KKR won the toss, but their decision to bat first cost them as MI’s bowlers went on the attack from word go. 
  • Like many other teams, KKR also struggled against the disciplined MI pace attack and had to settle for a meagre 116 runs at the end of 16.2 overs. 
  • Skipper Ajinkya Rahane did put up some fight, scoring 32 runs off 27 balls, but the rest of the team floundered.

  • With an incredibly low target set of 117, KKR already lost the match when the MI Indians were at a whopping 121 runs with only 2 wickets lost at the 12.5 overs mark. 
  • Rickelton made MI proud with an undefeated, brilliant score of 61 at 45 balls.
  • With a stunning six to cap off the striking performance, Suryakumar Yadav ensured that MI emerged victorious by finishing with 27 runs off just 9 balls.
  • Defensively, KKR's Andre Russell, who each claimed two wicket, couldn't rein in the MI scorers, so the KKR bowling attack remained inadequate.

First ball, first wicket for Mumbai Indians; history had been written when Kumar dismissed KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane. Along with Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell fall prey to the 23-year-old left-arm medium pacer. Crowds at the Wankhede stadium were on their feet when he completely fooled Russell to hit the stumps. A historic evening for Ashwani Kumar, a historic night for the Indian Premier League. 

But it was not the first time that a Mumbai Indians bowler cleared a batter on their debut match. According to the stats, before Kumar, there were 2 more MI bowlers who did wonders before. Kumar became the third bowler for the Mumbai Indians to take a wicket on IPL debut. Ali Murtaza and Alzarri Joseph bagged a wicket on their very first IPL delivery. 

Back in 2019, Alzarri Joseph had a fairytale beginning for the Mumbai Indians in his IPL career. He delivered a maiden and dismissed David Warner in his debut over. Veteran Batter Dismissed by Andre Russell After Scoring 13 Runs

Mumbai Indians (MI) romped to victory in the IPL 2025 season courtesy of an eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede Stadium - this match marking both MI's and KKR's first of the season. MI’s Impact Player for the night, Rohit Sharma, did not have the best of nights at the plate, getting dismissed after scoring a mere 13 runs off 12 balls that included a single boundary before being eliminated by Andre Russell.

Rohit Sharma's Short Innings

Rohit began nicely and hit a six off Harshit Rana during the second over. But his innings ended during the sixth over when KKR brought Andre Russell into the game. On his second legal delivery, Russell got the big steak from Rohit, which was a minor blow to MI's means but not something they couldn't recover from.

MI, post Rohit’s early dismissal, managed to chase down the target with some overs to spare, registering their much-required win in IPL 2025.

Mumbai Indians left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar was the first Indian bowler to take a four-wicket haul on debut in the Indian Premier League. Left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday, March 31, and took 4/24.

The 23-year-old Punjab lad, who took the place of Satyanarayana Raju in the MI playing XI, fantastically began his IPL career. Ashwani bowled out KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane on his very first ball in the IPL, making him the fourth MI bowler to achieve the feat.

Following bowling one over of the powerplay, Ashwani was reintroduced to the attack to bowl the 11th over, and the seamer gave a fitting reply by taking two wickets.

Mumbai Indian's impressive young fast bowler Ashwin Kumar made a dream IPL debut by grabbing four wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede Stadium. The left-arm medium-pacer completely destroyed KKR's batting team with the bowling figures of 4/24, as the Mumbai Indians emerged winners. With his impressive bowling exuberance, Ashwin made his presence felt straight away by getting KKR's skipper Ajinkya Rahane out at his very first ball. He followed that up with an aggressive spell in which he removed Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey one after the other without allowing them to settle down. Along with those, his most important wicket and the final nail in KKR's coffin was that of Andre Russell, whom he got out, thus KKR's resistance came to an end.
