This was one of the most highlighted moments of the MI vs RCB, IPL 2025 match 20, when the leaders from these two teams faced off against each other. It was Patidar who made the final statement last night.

Hardik Pandya took the responsibility to bowl the 13th over of RCB's innings. Patidar was on the strike; Pandya delivered a good length, well out of the off-stump delivery, which Patidar dealt with his unique version of a ramp shot. The ball passed flying over the wicketkeeper's head for a boundary. In the same over, he managed to pull out another improvised shot for a 4. With those shots Patidar produced, Pandya had nothing to do; that was pure skill and fearless batting execution from the 31-year-old right-handed batter. Rajat bagged 64 off 32, with five 4s and four 6s with a 200.00 strike rate, which helped his team to exceed the total over 200 within the 20-overs limit.

In this Hardik Pandya over, Patidar avoided a possible serious injury. It was the delivery before the second boundary of the over; Patidar again tried something unique but could not execute it as he misjudged the bounce. The ball went straight and hit Patidar's helmet grill; the game paused for a moment, and medical assistants rushed onto the field for precautionary check-ups. Patidar was ready to bat after getting some treatment. At the following delivery of the incident, Patidar replied with the second boundary.

Mumbai Indians tried hard but it was RCB's moment

Batting first, RCB got 221 in exchange of 5 wickets on the scoreboard. Mumbai Indians tried hard to do chase the target. Despite Tilak Varma's 56 and captain Hardik Pandya's 42, Mumbai Indians could not make it to the finish line—RCB won by 12 runs. At the end of IPL 2025 match 20, RCB remains in the third spot with 6 points after 4 games, whereas Mumbai Indians are in 8th place with 2 points in 5 games.

It was the moment for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium last night. RCB pulled out their level best to defeat Mumbai Indians (MI) almost after a decade at their home ground. The match was full of exciting moments, from playing fearless shots to jaw-dropping fielding, a pure team game from the Rajat Patidar-led XI.

In the 20th over of MI's innings, Phil Salt and Tim David combined together to accomplish an infeasible catch near the boundary ropes. It was the very last over of the match; Deepak Chahar was on the strike, facing Krunal Pandya. The former IPL champion side then needed 19 off 5 balls for a historic win over Bengaluru.

Chahar had to go big, and he tried to swing his bat and sent the ball towards deep midwicket. The ball was high in the air; two RCB fielders, Phil Salt and Tim David, both were rushing towards the boundary line. The next thing that happened was forcing the Wankhede crowd to erupt in loud cheer.

In this way they completed the stunning catch

It was a running Salt who first grabbed the ball with his safe hands and then passed it towards his teammate David. David, under pressure, did not make any mistake to complete the catch. Chahar leave the field with a golden duck, and Krunal bagged a total of 4 wickets. Will Jacks, Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, and Deepak Chahar fall short against the Indian spinner.

Batting first, RCB put 221/5 on the scoreboard. Mumbai Indians, in reply, tried to make runs in a quick manner, which made RCB bowlers task much easier.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) were in for a dramatic situation during their battle against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on April 7. The situation was in the 12th over when RCB bowlers had so far managed to keep MI under pressure during their challenging 222-run chase. Suryakumar Yadav, the destructive batter of MI, was not able to get going, scoring just a run-a-ball as the required rate rose steadily.

Drama came to a head when RCB's Yash Dayal and Jitesh Sharma got into a nasty collision while attempting a catch after Dayal's crafty slower ball was mistimed by Suryakumar in a slog attempt. The ball went high into the air, with an easy catch appearing certain. Dayal and wicketkeeper Sharma both went up for it, but with no audible call. Despite getting under the ball, Dayal couldn't hold on after Sharma crashed into him, causing the ball to pop out of his hands.

Kohli’s Frustration and a Timely Breakthrough

RCB skipper Virat Kohli was visibly furious at the missed opportunity, throwing his cap to the ground in frustration. The group had already forfeited a similar opportunity earlier when Krunal Pandya lost the ball from view in the lights, awarding Yadav a boundary.

But RCB did not have to wait for long for their redemption. Just a couple of balls later, Yadav tried another huge shot to complete the over on a high but once again fell short of timing. This time, Liam Livingstone, at long last, did not err, cutting Suryakumar's struggling innings short at 28 off 26 balls, including five boundaries.

Though they dropped it, RCB's ball discipline meant the missed opportunity did not cost them heavily, as they kept mounting pressure in the pivotal middle overs.

Trent Boult (2/57) and Hardik Pandya (2/45) took some, but Jasprit Bumrah was too expensive with 0/21 and conceding runs in the death overs where RCB scored 78 runs, which left MI with a difficult chase under difficult dew conditions.

Post-Match Reactions - MI vs RCB

Krunal Pandya (RCB): "It was always going to be one of us winning. Hardik batted well, but I'm glad we came out on top. With Santner at the crease and the short leg-side boundary, I used my experience and played with a clear plan."

Hardik Pandya (MI Captain): "It was a hit-fest and we were just two hits short. The bowlers struggled on this pitch, but I am not going to be too hard on them. Tilak was exceptional, particularly after suffering a hit prior to the match. Powerplays and death overs proved to be the difference. Delighted to have Bumrah back."

Rajat Patidar (RCB Captain & Player of the Match): "It was a hard-fought game and credit to our bowling unit. It is not easy to defend here, but they played flawlessly. Special credit to Krunal for bowling an exceptional last over in pressure."

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar should thank his luck and modern cricketing gear, as he had just avoided a possible serious injury during the clash of the two juggernauts of the Indian Premier League, match number 20—Mumbai Indians (MI) vs. RCB.

During the third delivery of the 13th over of RCB's innings, MI skipper Hardik Pandya, then with his bowling duties, the ball went straight to Thudd in Patidar's helmet grill, which pushed him into a discomfort position for a while. Medical assistants rushed into the field for precautionary check-ups. Patidar was ready to bat after taking some treatment, and the match went on. At the following delivery of the incident, Patidar replied with a solid boundary. In fact, he executed a perfect ramp shot to send the ball to the fence.

A delivery later, the right-handed batter again tried to do some heroics, but he missed the ball. Patidar misjudged the bounce this time. In this over, despite the incident, RCB fetched 11 runs without any hesitation.

RCB put a fighting total of 221 runs against MI

The match witnesses a returning Jasprit Bumrah from a long injury spell and MI's former leader Rohit Sharma, who missed their previous game. Bumrah produced a 4-over spell without claiming any wickets but didn't allow the batter to run freely. The star Indian pacer offered only 29 runs in his 4 matches with an economy rate of 7.25.

Despite losing the match to Phul Salt (4), RCB batters did not show any intention to gear down. Virat Kohli scored 67 off 42, giving his team the solid foundation for a mammoth total on the scoreboard. Fearless Patidar scored 64 with a 200.00 strike rate, and at the lower order, it was Jitesh Sharma who stitched a 40-run innings, allowing RCB to put 221 on the scoreboard.

Kohli, the face of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has been a one-franchise player since the inception of the IPL in 2008. With images of the enthralling match between RCB and Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 7, Kohli reminisces about a bygone era where he reflects on his IPL journey from a struggling youngster to the highest run scorer in the history of the IPL.

He has played 255 matches in IPL and has scored an astonishing pre-MI game figure of 8101 runs at an average of 38.76. Now, at 36, he is still the rock of the RCB side, having shown loyalty to the franchise for 18 years. However, his initial years in the tournament were a disappointment. Sharing his thoughts on the show ‘Kohli has been given up’ on RCB first winning the IPL, he mentioned how he could not get used to the format during the first three seasons of the tournament.

Finding His Groove

Kohli, in a recent Star Sports interview, expressed the difficulty of dealing with IPL mashed into the time-restrictive format: “Achieve this goal I was not able to crack the nut for the first three seasons. I was playing different roles, but from 2010 I started performing a little better. I think my career saw some upward change in that phase and after 2011.” I started playing often at number three, which provided me with more consistency and clarity." Kohli's record against the Mumbai Indians makes for impressive reading.

He has scored 855 runs in 32 innings against them, at an average of 30.53 and a strike rate of 126.05. He has five half-centuries against MI, based on a high of a fluent 92 at Wankhede Stadium in 2018. As Kohli prepares for another encounter with the five-time champions, fans will hope to witness such a knock from the RCB great once more.

In a nail-biting contest at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 7, 2025, Mumbai Indians (MI) took on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Match 20 of IPL 2025. RCB's explosive opener, Phil Salt, has been in excellent form for the team in the past few games. However, his stint at the crease was cut short, thanks to a masterclass from MI’s veteran pacer Trent Boult. The game, which was filled with expectation, had Salt step out to start the innings with his partner, looking to set the tone for RCB's run chase or first innings, depending on the toss.

The drama was played out in the very first over. Salt, who has a reputation for his ferocious stroke play, got off the mark in style by dispatching a boundary to Boult's opening delivery—a stylish cover drive that announced his arrival. The Wankhede crowd was full of life, anticipating fireworks from the Englishman. But Boult, with all his experience, had different ideas. On the very first ball after that, he produced a peach of a delivery that came back in, thudding into Salt's leg stump. Salt, who was out for a mere 4 runs off 2 balls, walked back to the pavilion, leaving RCB in disarray soon. This dismissal gave MI a vital edge and set the stage for a dogfight-like battle.

Trent Boult's sendoff of Phil Salt wasn't only a piece of glory for MI; it was proof of his sustained excellence in the IPL. This scalp was Boult's 31st in the opening over of an IPL game, establishing his record as a new-ball master. For RCB, Salt's departure early on mounted pressure on the middle order to steady the innings, and MI took advantage of the momentum. As the game went on, Boult's initial strike continued to be a turning point in this high-intensity encounter.

MI vs RCB, IPL 2025: RCB is ready to take on a tie against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru outscored MI on only one occasion, which was back in 2015 and now 2025—a decade. In this long time, RCB was never able to defeat the Mumbai Indians at their home ground, Wankhede Stadium. This time things are looking much different.

Mumbai Indians, the 5-time IPL title winners, are finding their consistent form, and RCB, yet to achieve their first IPL silverware, is in a better shape from the beginning of the tournament. According to head-to-head stats of the last 5 encounters between these two rivals, RCB has better numbers than the Mumbai-based team. Royal Challengers Bengaluru was better than MI in 3 matches out of the last five, while Mumbai won 2. But in the last two faceoffs, he had the better hand, and both of the matches were in Wankhede.

RCB is now looking better than before; the side looks very much balanced and gains much-needed momentum, which can drive the team for a long run.In 2015, Wankhede Stadium witnessed the high-scoring, neck-to-neck rivalry and an all-time record-breaking partnership between two players, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

This was how RCB outclassed MI at Wankhede

The South African batter's unbeaten 133 off 59 balls innings was well accompanied by Virat Kohli's unbeaten 82 off 50 balls knock. In total, Kohli and Villiers hit eight 6s and 25 boundaries together. Bowlers like Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah had no clue that they had to stop that rampage. RCB put 235/1 on the scoreboard before Mumbai Indians went all-out to accomplish the near-impossible task. Two West Indies batters, Lendl Simmons & Kieron Pollard, were toying with RCB bowlers. At the end, RCB claimed their only victory in Wankhede by 39 runs.

Virat Kohli is now beyond his prime days, and AB has already retired. RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, will face Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians. After losing 3 in 4 matches, MI is now at the 8th spot of the IPL 2025 points table, and RCB, with 2 wins and one loss, is at number three.
