At the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the match unfolded as a test of endurance for the batsmen due to the challenging pitch conditions. Quinton de Kock emerged as the standout performer, notching up the sole half-century of the game with a blistering 81 runs off 56 deliveries. Nicholas Pooran’s explosive innings of 40 runs from just 21 balls, including five crucial sixes in the final two overs, propelled LSG to a competitive total of 181/5.

In response, the RCB batters struggled to find their footing on the unpredictable pitch, eventually succumbing to the opposition’s bowling attack and getting bundled out for 153 runs. Consequently, they suffered a defeat by a margin of 28 runs.

De Kock’s impressive fifty provides the backbone for LSG

Partnering with K L Rahul at the top, de Kock wasted no time in launching an assault, particularly targeting Reece Topley in the opening over. While Rahul watched from the non-striker’s end, de Kock unleashed an array of boundaries. His first six came off Mohammed Siraj’s delivery, effortlessly lofting a length ball over fine leg and into the stands at M Chinnaswamy stadium.

Maintaining his aggression, de Kock struck another maximum off Siraj, this time dispatching a length delivery over deep backward square leg. The opening pair of de Kock and Rahul put together 53 runs in just 33 balls, with de Kock being the more aggressive of the two, contributing 32 runs off 19 deliveries. With a strike rate of 114.64, de Kock’s innings of 81 off 56 balls featured eight boundaries and five sixes.

Mayank brings storm in match with his exceptional performances

Following his stellar debut against the Punjab Kings, the pacer continued his impressive form by wreaking havoc on the RCB batting lineup with his fiery pace.

Entering the attack in the sixth over, Mayank immediately made an impact by dismissing the dangerous Glenn Maxwell. Employing his signature weapon—a blistering bouncer clocked at 151 kph—Maxwell attempted a pull shot but was late, resulting in a simple catch for Nicholas Pooran at mid-on.

In his next over, Mayank produced another sensational delivery to dismiss the highly regarded Australian, Cameron Green. The ball beat Green’s outside edge and crashed into the top of off-stump as he played inside the line.

Consistently clocking speeds of 150-plus, Mayank unsettled the RCB batsmen with his express pace. His third victim, Rajat Patidar, fell to a top-edged pull shot caught at fine leg for 29, highlighting the batsman’s struggle to cope with Mayank’s pace.

Finishing with remarkable figures of 3/14 in four overs, Mayank achieved his second consecutive three-wicket haul in the tournament. Additionally, he set a new record for the fastest delivery in IPL 2024, clocking an astonishing 156.7 kph during the match.

Pooran survived an early scare when he was dropped on just 2 runs by Anuj Rawat, and from there on, he unleashed an onslaught that Bengaluru won’t soon forget. Following his impactful 42 off 21 balls in LSG’s previous match against the Punjab Kings, Pooran escalated his aggression by smashing a whirlwind 40 runs off just 21 deliveries in this encounter, including five towering sixes in the last two overs, completely altering the game’s momentum.

Taking a particular liking to left-arm seamer Topley, Pooran launched three consecutive sixes off his bowling in the 19th over. And to add insult to injury, he targeted Siraj in the final over, dispatching him for two massive shots to propel the visitors to a formidable total.

With a scorching strike rate of 190.47, Pooran stunned the Bengaluru crowd with one boundary and five maximums. LSG’s last five overs proved to be the turning point, as they accumulated 50 runs, with 33 of those coming in the final two overs, featuring Pooran’s destructive hitting.

Fans were left in awe witnessing the remarkable performance by LSG, particularly Pooran’s explosive batting display and Mayank’s performance. As the match concluded, the spectators eagerly anticipated more such electrifying performances from the team in the upcoming games, setting high expectations for the rest of the tournament.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured their second victory of the IPL 2024 season with an impressive 28-run win over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Led by Quinton de Kock’s stellar 81 and supported by Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 40-run innings, LSG posted a challenging total of 181/5. Youngster Mayank Yadav’s remarkable three-wicket haul then played a pivotal role in restricting RCB to 153 all-out in 19.4 overs.

Explosive Start: De Kock and Rahul’s Opening Stand

LSG’s decision to bat first paid off handsomely as openers Quinton de Kock and
captain KL Rahul provided a blistering start, notching up a quickfire 53-run
partnership for the first wicket. Their aggressive approach set the tone for
LSG’s innings and put pressure on the RCB bowlers right from the outset.

The momentum was momentarily halted when LSG skipper KL Rahul fell prey to
Glenn Maxwell after a brisk 20-run cameo off just 14 deliveries. Rahul’s
dismissal brought Devdutt Padikkal to the crease, who struggled to get going
and managed only 6 runs from 11 balls before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj.

De Kock Dominance and Pooran’s Explosive Finish

Meanwhile, Quinton de Kock continued his onslaught, anchoring the innings with
a splendid 81 off 52 balls. Marcus Stoinis played a valuable supporting role,
contributing 24 runs off 15 deliveries before falling victim to Maxwell’s
guile.

The highlight of LSG’s innings was Nicholas Pooran’s explosive batting display
in the latter stages. Pooran’s unbeaten 40 off just 21 balls provided the
finishing touches to the inning and propelled LSG to a formidable total of 181
runs.

RCB’s Chase and Collapse

In response, RCB’s chase got off to a promising start, with Virat Kohli and Faf
du Plessis stitching together a solid partnership. However, a flurry of
wickets, including Kohli’s dismissal for 22 runs, derailed RCB’s innings.
Mayank Yadav’s exceptional bowling performance, which included the key wickets
of Maxwell and Cameron Green, further compounded RCB’s woes.

Yadav’s Heroics and Pooran’s Brilliance

Mayank Yadav emerged as the star performer for LSG, claiming three crucial
wickets to dismantle RCB’s batting lineup. His exceptional bowling display
earned him plaudits and played a decisive role in securing victory for his
team. Nicholas Pooran’s stunning direct hit to dismiss Mayank Dagar exemplified
LSG’s fielding prowess and capped off a comprehensive win. Mahipal Lomror, who added 33 runs off 13 balls was scalped by Yash Thakur.

RCB vs LSG Match Preview

The IPL has entered its third week, with a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants. When LSG visited the Chinnaswamy Stadium last year, tempers flared. LSG’s bowlers got them home on the last ball after Pooran and Stoinis annihilated the RCB bowlers in pursuit of a 200-plus target. The match was also full of drama, with Kohli colliding with Naveen ul Haq on the field and Gambhir after the game. Both teams need a win to advance in the tournament, but RCB more so. RCB has only won one of its three games, and a loss in this match will send them to the bottom of the table.

43rd Match, IPL: Royal Challengers Bangalore 126 for 9 (du Plessis 44, Kohli 31, Naveen 3-30) beat Lucknow Super Giants 108 (Gowtham 23, Hazlewood 2-15, Karn 2-20) by 18 runs

On the batting paradise at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants scored 425 runs in 40 overs in their previous meeting. On Monday night, LSG served a dark soil pitch on their home ground where the ball grasped and held into the surface. The outcome: 234 runs were scored in 39.5 overs, with RCB winning by 18 runs.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis set the tone by adding 62 runs in nine overs after Faf du Plessis chose to bat. However, the innings never really moved beyond first gear. Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi, Amit Mishra and K Gowtham joined to bowl 13 overs of twisting and got 5 for 73 between them. Naveen-ul-Haq, who bowled his cutters into the pitch, also reaped the benefits, taking three wickets at the end to keep RCB at 126 for 9.

LSG’s response was a nightmare of a start. After seven overs, they were 38 for 5 and 77 for 8 when Marcus Stoinis and Gowtham also fell in consecutive overs. KL Rahul was at that point LSG’s only hope. In the second over of the game, he injured his right leg and hobbled off the field. However, by the time he reached No. 11, LSG required 24 from 8 balls.

It was abundantly clear that Rahul would not attempt to cross the wickets. He played three dots, one of which was a free hit. After that, he saw Amit Mishra trying to score 23 in the last over.

RCB’s slow start

After RCB scored just 20 runs in the initial three overs, du Plessis and Kohli attempted to break the shackles. Kohli followed with a four after du Plessis struck Naveen for a straight six in the fourth over. However, in the subsequent two games, Krunal and Bishnoi only gave up ten goals, and RCB won the powerplay with 42 points.

Bishnoi gets Kohli and Maxwell

When Kohli made the decision to skip the match against Bishnoi, Du Plessis and Kohli had reached 62 in 8.5 overs. He was nowhere near the ball, which also turned into a googly and beat Nicholas Pooran on the inside edge for an easy stumping.

No. 3 Prior to Gowtham’s dismissal, Anuj Rawat only scored nine. As a result, RCB’s arguably best spin batter, Glenn Maxwell, was placed in the middle. On his fifth ball, he attempted to  reverse-sweep a Bishnoi legbreak just to get hit on the thigh and be given out lbw.

Mishra had Suyash Prabhudessai caught at long-off in the 15th over thanks to a great diving catch by Gowtham, leaving RCB 90 for 4.

Rain but no runs

Dinesh Karthik started play by hitting Naveen over midwicket for four after a brief period of rain stopped play for about 25 minutes. He got Mishra to pull a half-tracker for a six in the 17th over, and du Plessis also tried to take Mishra on, but he missed. Krunal rushed to one side from point and finished the tumbling get close to additional cover.

RCB had been hoping Karthik would deliver a few last-minute blows, but Yash Thakur ended their hopes. In the 19th over, Wanindu Hasaranga hit a ball back toward Thakur, who fielded it and hit the ball directly at the non-striker’s end, putting Karthik short of the wicket after he had run a long way.

RCB bounce back

Mohammed Siraj has been deadly with the new ball this season, and he indeed struck early, having Kyle Mayers gotten at mid-on with the second wad of the pursuit. LSG were two for one after two overs.

Krunal hit Siraj for three progressive fours in the third to make a definite difference, yet LSG lost four wickets in the following four overs. Krunal was quick to go, chipping Maxwell to long-off. Josh Hazlewood bowled out Ayush Badoni, who had replaced Thakur as an Impact Player and started the inning.

With his first ball, Wanindu Hasaranga dealt a blow, pulling Deepak Hooda out of the crease with a googly and leaving him stumped. Pooran began with a first-ball six yet when he attempted to go for one more success against Karn Sharma, he holed out to deep square leg.

LSG slip further

LSG continued to appear to be attacking the target. Gowtham hit Karn for a six and four, and followed it with one more six off Hasaranga. That diminished the condition to 64 required from the last ten overs. However, Karn sliced Stoinis’s attempt to go big against him to long-off. Gowtham was run out in the following over as well due to his careless running while returning for a second run.

Rahul leaves it too late

LSG required 49 in the last five overs with two wickets close by. Mishra and Naveen were in the center; The dugout’s padding still covered Rahul. The required rate kept going up, and by the time Rahul got there, it was too late because Mishra couldn’t get the boundaries and he couldn’t run.

BCCI observed Avesh Khan‘s forceful response after the last chunk of the IPL 2023 match between Lucknow Super Monsters and Imperial Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru and reproved the LSG pacer. On Monday, he was found guilty of violating the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

Avesh Khan of Lucknow Super Giants has received a warning for breaking the Code of Conduct

Avesh confessed to even out 1 offense 2.2 of IPL’s Set of principles and acknowledged the approval.

“The Match Referee’s decision is final and binding for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct,”

the IPL stated in a release.

When No. 11 Avesh Khan walked out to bat in the high-pressure situation, LSG needed one run off the final ball. The experienced Jaydev Unadkat had made an easy catch on the previous ball but had lost his composure. Avesh now had to find a way to sneak out on his own and get his side home.

However, the drama had just begun. RCB medium pacer Harshal Patel stopped on his delivery stride to attempt to inflict a run-out after seeing non-striker Ravi Bishnoi set off for a single, but miraculously missed the stumps. Bishnoi got through. However, this didn’t stop the youthful LSG leg-spinner from taking another early advantage. This time, Harshal bowled a normal delivery rather than another run-out.

Avesh tried to swing for his life, but he didn’t hit the ball. Avesh also set off after observing Bishnoi’s desperate attempt to sneak in a break. Bishnoi and Avesh were able to reach home in time to secure a dramatic LSG victory because RCB goalkeeper Dinesh Karthik failed to collect the ball on the first chance.

Avesh took off his helmet and threw it to the ground as soon as he reached the non-striker’s end. It was this very act that resulted in the censure from the BCCI.

After the high-octane match between RCB and LSG, disciplinary action was not taken against Avesh. After his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate, captain Faf du Plessis of the RCB was given a fine of 12 lakh rupees.

“The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 15 against the Lucknow Super Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Monday. As it was the team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, captain Faf du Plessis was fined ₹12 lakh,”

IPL said.

Shardul Thakur’s enterprising knock and KKR’s mystery spinners have raised concerns over RCB’s batting depth and death bowling. LSG though will be happy with how their spinners managed to choke SRH, and with how Krunal Pandya performed in particular. They still have questions with regards to Quinton De Kock’s inclusion, but those are rather happy headaches.

KL Rahul, Kyle Mayers, Quinton De Kock, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Nicholas Pooran/ Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni/Avesh Khan, Krishnappa Gowtham, Mark Wood, Yash Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi

RCB Playing XI

RCB vs LSG Key Players

Mohammad Siraj

Mohammad Siraj looks menacing with the new-ball. Barring a few wides in the death, he was pretty good in the back end too. His pace though has been very sharp and he has been getting the ball to pitch and move from some really good areas making him a really tough character to pick in the powerplay.

Kyle Mayers

With his explosive hitting and medium pace up front, Kyle Mayers has made himself a tough candidate to leave out. He gives the Lucknow management a happy headache with Quinton De Kock coming back, leaving Lucknow wondering who to leave out.

Rivalries to Watch out For

KL Rahul vs RCB: KL Rahul’s record against RCB is a rather good one. His striker-ate against them is pretty high at 147, and his century against them in 2020, remains fresh as it was an incredible display of aggression and capitalization of opportunities. He knows the Chinnasamy as well as anyone, and Bangalore will be keeping an eye on him despite his below par returns so far.

RCB vs SRH Match Tips

RCB and LSG have produced some nice games in the past with RCB coming out on top. With a small ground ahead though, LSG will feel they are in with an advantage, although they are playing away from home.

Match Prediction: Lucknow Super Giants Win the Match
