The three-match T20I series between India and Sri Lanka began on Saturday, July 27, in Pallekele. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first against the world champions.

New captains lead the way

This match starts a new chapter for both teams as they have new T20I captains. Suryakumar Yadav has taken over from Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I captain after Rohit retired from the format. Charith Asalanka is the new captain for Sri Lanka, following Wanindu Hasaranga’s resignation after their poor T20 World Cup performance, where they didn’t advance past the group stage.

“We are going to bowl first. The pitch looks good, and we want to see how it plays. We’re going with a 6-5 batters-bowlers combination. I want to give each player specific roles, so we’re using five bowlers. You can expect more wins and consistency,” said Asalanka after winning the toss.

Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson left out

India’s new team management surprised everyone with their team selection. Allrounder Shivam Dube and star batter Sanju Samson were left out of the Playing XI for the series opener. Dube played in all eight of India’s games at the T20 World Cup last month, and Samson was also part of the squad.

Despite some good performances, Dube seems to need to prove himself to the new management. Instead of Dube, the team has given young Riyan Parag another chance to shine in international cricket.

Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer who starred in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory, is on the verge of fulfilling his long-standing dream of playing Test cricket. The 25-year-old has consistently expressed his aspiration to compete in Test matches.

Following his standout performances in the T20 World Cup, Singh is now poised for his debut in the Test squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Rohit Sharma and the team are scheduled to play a five-match Test series against Australia from November to December this year, and Singh’s impressive form suggests he will receive his maiden Test call-up.

Arshdeep Singh’s first Test call-up is approaching for the upcoming tour of Australia

Indian selectors are considering adding the left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh to the Test squad, given his outstanding performances in limited-overs cricket. Impressed by his exceptional showing in the T20 World Cup 2024, the selectors are eager to include him in the team for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Singh ended the T20 World Cup 2024 as one of the joint-leading wicket-takers, alongside Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi, with 17 wickets. Reports suggest that the national selectors have advised him to play a few matches in the upcoming Duleep Trophy to strengthen his chances of earning a Test call-up.

A source close to the situation told the Times of India: “Arshdeep has demonstrated impressive swing in white-ball cricket for India. He might be asked to participate in some domestic red-ball games, starting with the Duleep Trophy on September 5, to improve his selection prospects for the Australia tour. There’s a strong possibility that he could become India’s key player, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, in Australia.”

The source also mentioned, “The selectors are particularly interested in adding another left-arm pace option to the white-ball squad, which is why Khaleel Ahmed was included in the Zimbabwe tour and has been selected for both the ODIs and T20Is in Sri Lanka.”Currently, both Khaleel and Arshdeep are with Team India in Sri Lanka. They will participate in the upcoming three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The tour begins with the first T20I match on July 27 in Pallekele.

Riyan Parag and Harshit Rana are set to be developed as future stars

Riyan Parag has reportedly been included in both white-ball squads for the Sri Lanka tour due to an injury to middle-order batsman Tilak Varma. The Indian selectors aim to develop Parag, who is known for his solid all-round skills, including decent bowling, exceptional fielding, and explosive batting.

Similarly, Harshit Rana has received his maiden call-up to India’s ODI squad, thanks to his impressive ability to bowl yorkers, slower balls, and other variations in the death overs, making him a valuable asset in white-ball cricket. The selectors are focusing on grooming Rana, Parag, and Khaleel Ahmed for the future as the Indian team navigates a transition phase, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja having retired from T20I cricket.

During India’s tour of Zimbabwe, Riyan Parag had a heartwarming moment when his father Parag Das gave him his debut India cap. This was a historic milestone as Riyan became the first player from Assam to play for the Indian team.

Riyan, a young all-rounder received his debut India cap from his father, who is a former first class cricketer for Assam. The father and son shared a joyful hug, making it a dream come true moment as Riyan prepared to represent India in the first T20I against Zimbabwe.

This achievement is significant as Riyan is the first player from the Northeast to play for the country. His journey began with his appearance for India at the U-19 World Cup in 2018. The following year, he joined the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has since become a key player for the team.

Parag’s Impressive Performance in IPL 2024

Riyan’s exceptional skills were evident in the last domestic season. He led the charts in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20, scoring 510 runs at a strike rate of 182.79 and taking 11 wickets. His impressive performances continued in the Deodhar Trophy, where he scored 354 runs in five matches and took 11 wickets.

In the Ranji Trophy, he scored 378 runs at an average of 75.60 in four matches, including two centuries. In IPL 2024, he earned the Orange Cap in the initial games and finished the season as the highest scorer for his team and third overall, with 573 runs at a strike rate of 149.22.

Along with Riyan Parag, two other young talents, Dhruv Jurel and Abhishek Sharma, also made their India debuts in the first T20I against Zimbabwe on July 6. Shubman Gill was leading the team, won the toss and chose to bowl first in the series opener.

The Indian Premier League, a veritable breeding ground for cricketing talent, has once again brought a group of promising players to the fore. The just-concluded 2024 edition was a platform for these emerging Indian players, who could potentially bring about a sea change in the national cricket team.

Here’s a rundown of the top five Indian players who, based on their IPL performances, could be on their way to their first international call.

1. Nitish Kumar Reddy (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Sunrisers Hyderabad has uncovered yet another cricketing treasure in the form of Nitish Kumar Reddy, a pace-bowling all-rounder. This sought-after combination frequently piques the curiosity of Indian cricket selection. At the age of 21, Reddy has distinguished himself by his ability to flourish in high-pressure circumstances and guide the innings to a successful completion.

The youngster also won this year’s Emerging Player of the Year title, scoring 303 runs in 15 matches at an average of 33.67. He took three wickets with the ball and had the best bowling stats of 2/17. Nitish played a significant part in enabling the team’s third IPL finale match.

2. Abhishek Sharma (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Having associations since 2019 with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Abhishek Sharma paid back the trust after a memorable cricketing display as the team’s opener. With his opening partner, Travis Head, Sharma has created havoc with the bat by making a sound and aggressive start towards the team’s high-scoring total, with their highest team total of 287/3 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru being one of them.

He has smashed 484 runs in 16 matches, with a strike rate of over 200. As an all-rounder, he also has the potential to turn the ball and scalp some crucial wickets. It would be interesting to see how he performs as an opener when he gets his maiden international call in the future.

3. Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals)

Riyan Parag has been a part of Rajasthan Royals for an extended period, but his performance has gradually declined season by season. With numerous trolls and backlash, Parag gave a befitting reply to such haters with his all-rounding performance in the recent season. He acted as the medium of robust to the team’s middle-order batting and helped in scalping crucial wins for the team.

He emerged as the team’s best run-scorer in IPL 2024, achieving the third-highest total tally with 573 runs at a strike rate of 149.21 throughout 14 innings. With a sophisticated approach and a relaxed attitude, Parag’s proficient tactics have created a lasting impression, which implies that a call-up to the Indian squad may be approaching.

4. Mayank Yadav (Lucknow Super Giants)

Though Mayank Yadav’s IPL career was cut short owing to repeated ailments, the speed phenom made the most of his opportunities while still in the league. Mayank’s blazing speed and pinpoint precision in his maiden match astounded the crowd.

Despite bowling only 12.1 overs in the competition and taking seven wickets with a fantastic economy rate of 6.98, Mayank’s early exit from the IPL 2024 did not herald the end of his career. With his impressive quickness and intriguing talent, he is undoubtedly on selectors’ radar for future possibilities.

5. Shashank Singh (Punjab Kings)

During the 2024 IPL auction, Shashank Singh’s purchase by the Punjab Kings was an atmosphere of confusion and rumours, as the team wanted another player going by the same name. But this purchase turned out to be a masterstroke and made one of the players who might get his India debut call very soon. He became the face of the team’s middle-order lineup.

The batter hit 415 runs in the 14 games he played in the competition this season, with a strike-rate of 161. The effect of his knocks made him a superstar for the Punjab Kings as he came out to bat amid tight moments and won them the game when the team had practically no chance of success.

<![CDATA[IPL 2024: Fans criticise Gavaskar for lashing out at Riyan Parag]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2024-fans-criticise-gavaskar-for-lashing-out-at-riyan-parag/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2024-fans-criticise-gavaskar-for-lashing-out-at-riyan-parag/ Sat, 25 May 2024 07:05:25 GMT

Riyan Parag bowed out of IPL 2024 as the third-highest run-scorer of the tournament, with 573 runs from 16 matches. However, his performance in the crucial Qualifier 2 match against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) left many, including former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, fuming. Parag scored just six runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by SRH’s impact substitute Shahbaz Ahmed.

Chasing 176, Rajasthan Royals (RR) struggled to find boundaries, going 22 balls without a four or six before Parag decided to take on Shahbaz. His attempted aggressive shot resulted in a top-edge, caught by Abhishek at deep mid-wicket.

“Seriously, seriously? What’s the use of all the talent if you are not going to think?…”

Gavaskar, on commentary duties, was critical of Parag’s approach, questioning the utility of his talent if he wasn’t going to “think” through his decisions. Parag’s dismissal was pivotal as it sparked a collapse for RR, who lost three wickets in the space of 15 balls. This collapse ultimately led to their downfall, as the 2008 champions couldn’t recover and SRH secured a 36-run victory to advance to the final.

“Seriously, seriously? What’s the use of all the talent if you are not going to think? What kind of shot is that, seriously? So much talent. If you don’t have the temperament, it won’t work. So what if you had a few dot balls? You can still make up for it,” Gavaskar was heard as saying on commentary.

Shahbaz Ahmed, who came in as an impact substitute, was the star for SRH. He contributed 18 runs and took three crucial wickets, returning figures of 3-23. His performance earned him the player of the match accolade, with SRH skipper Pat Cummins revealing it was coach Daniel Vettori’s decision to bring in Ahmed.

Earlier in the game, SRH, known for their record IPL totals of 277 and 287 this season, struggled with their batting until Heinrich Klaasen boosted the score with his fourth fifty of the season. Rajasthan’s Trent Boult made early inroads by dismissing Abhishek in the first over and taking two more wickets in the fifth, sending back Rahul Tripathi (37) and Aiden Markram (1).

Fast bowler Avesh Khan also played a key role, taking two wickets in two balls, prompting SRH to bring in Shahbaz Ahmed. Despite the early setbacks, SRH managed to post a defendable total and, with Shahbaz’s crucial contributions, secured their place in the final. Fans on Twitter shared mixed reactions, with some criticizing Gavaskar’s harsh words for Parag, while others echoed the former captain’s sentiments about the young player’s approach.

Fans criticize Gavaskar for harsh comments on Parag

Following Sunil Gavaskar’s scathing remarks on Riyan Parag’s dismissal, fans took to Twitter to express their discontent. Many felt Gavaskar was overly harsh, arguing that he overlooked Parag’s consistent performances throughout the tournament.

Many felt that Gavaskar’s comments on Parag’s temperament were unwarranted and ignored the context of the match and Parag’s crucial contributions to his team throughout the season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are set to clash in IPL 2024 Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 24. This match is crucial as both teams aim for their second IPL title. SRH, led by Pat Cummins, comes off a heavy defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 1, while Sanju Samson’s RR triumphed over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator.

3 players to be in focus from RR

Trent Boult: RR’s Bowling Spearhead

Trent Boult has been a standout performer for RR this season, taking 13 wickets in 15 matches with an economy rate 8.06. His ability to strike early with the new ball makes him a formidable force.

See Also: GCA clarifies main reason for RCB skipping practice, denies terror threat

Boult’s career in the IPL is decorated with impressive figures, having taken 118 wickets. His spell of 4-0-16-1 in the Eliminator against RCB highlights his ability to keep runs in check while taking crucial wickets. In the recent Eliminator, Boult’s economical bowling laid the foundation for RR’s victory, and his consistency will be vital in the upcoming clash against SRH. If Boult can get early wickets in quick succession, he can significantly hinder SRH’s ability to post a competitive total. This would put RR in a strong position to qualify for the IPL final.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: The Aggressive Opener

Jaiswal’s strike rate is over 145 against SRH, indicating his aggressive style. This season, he has scored 393 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 152.32, including a century.

Jaiswal has been crucial for RR despite ups and downs, especially in providing a strong start. His 45 runs off 30 balls in the Eliminator were pivotal in setting the tone for the chase. Jaiswal’s partnerships at the top, especially with Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Sanju Samson, have been instrumental in building solid foundations for RR’s innings. If Yashasvi Jaiswal provides another steady start for RR in this must-win game against SRH, then RR can either post a big total on the board or chase down any target with confidence.

Riyan Parag: The Uncapped Hero

Riyan Parag has emerged as a vital player for RR, scoring 567 runs at an average of 56.70 and a strike rate of 151.60. His promotion to number four has paid off, making him the top run-scorer for RR this season.

Parag’s 36 off 26 balls in the Eliminator against RCB showcased his ability to handle pressure. His consistency and ability to finish games make him a key player. Parag’s presence in the middle order provides stability and firepower, which is crucial for RR’s success. His ability to score quickly and maintain partnerships will be vital against SRH.

Sent into bat, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scored 172/8. In reply, Rajasthan Royals (RR) chased down the target of 173 with six balls to spare.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag shine as RR defeat RCB in IPL eliminator

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a 30-ball 45, while Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer chipped in with quick-fire contributions of 36 and 26, respectively. Earlier, Rajat Patidar top-scored for RCB with 34 off 22 balls. In-form opener Virat Kohli made 33 off 24 balls before falling to wily leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, while Mahipal Lomror scored a brisk 17-ball 32. Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bowled beautifully, finishing with excellent figures of 2/19 in four overs, taking the wickets of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell off successive balls. Avesh Khan took 3/44 in his four overs.

The match started with Rajasthan Royals winning the toss and opting to bowl first. RCB lost its first wicket when Faf Du Plessis was caught by Powell off Trent Boult for 17 runs. RCB reached 50 runs in six overs at the end of the powerplay.

Virat Kohli’s milestone and Ashwin’s brilliant bowling fail to bring results

Virat Kohli became the first batsman to score 8000 runs in IPL history before being dismissed for 33 by Chahal, leaving RCB at 56/2. Patidar was dropped by Jurel on 6, and RCB stood at 82/2 after 11 overs. Ashwin then took a crucial breakthrough, dismissing Cameron Green for 27, caught by Powell, and Glenn Maxwell for a duck on the very next ball, leaving RCB at 97/4.

Patidar fell for 34 to Avesh Khan, taking RCB to 122/5. Dinesh Karthik was caught by Jaiswal off Avesh Khan for 11, making it 154/6. Lomror’s quick 32 off 17 balls ended with his dismissal by Avesh Khan, and RCB finished their innings at 172/8.

Rajasthan Royals started their chase with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tom Kohler-Cadmore. RCB dropped two catches in the first five overs. Kohler-Cadmore was dismissed for 20 by Ferguson, leaving RR at 47/1 after six overs at the end of the powerplay. Cameron Green got Jaiswal out for 45, and Karn Sharma stumped Sanju Samson for 17, making it 86/3. Dhruv Jurel was run out by Virat Kohli for 8, leaving RR at 112/4. Parag then hit two sixes and a four off Green’s over, bringing momentum back to RR.

Despite these late wickets, RR chased down the target with six balls to spare, securing a four-wicket victory and advancing to the second eliminator.

Punjab Kings registered a convincing win by 5 wickets over Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati in the 65th match of the ongoing IPL 2024 on Wednesday, May 15. Sam Curran smashed a quick fifty and the bowlers helped the team win.

RR players failed to do well with the bat

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bat first. RR had a poor start as their opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got out for a mere 4. However, Kohler-Cadmore and Sanju Samson tried to steady the ship but they couldn’t do much. Riyan Parag played yet another good knock of 48 off 34. On the other hand, R Ashwin also scored 28 off 19 with 3 fours and 1 six.

Their efforts helped them post a decent total of 144 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. Sam Curran, Harshal Patel and Rahul Chahar claimed 2 wickets each.

Sam Curran scored a quick fifty

While chasing, PBKS lost their in-form opener Prabhsimran Singh for a mere 4. However, Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw tried to steady the ship and added 30 runs within 5.3 overs before the latter got out. Soon Shashank Singh also got out for a duck.

However, after their dismissals, middle-order batters Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma stepped up. While Sam scored a quickfire 63 off 41 with 5 fours and 3 sixes, Jitesh Sharma scored 22 and Ashutosh Sharma’s quick 17 helped them to win the match by 5 wickets and 18.5 overs in hand.

Sanju Samson said after the match: “We needed a few more runs. I think we were 10-15 runs short. It was a 160 kind of a wicket. We would have easily got more than 160 (had we played better), that’s where we lost the game. Would have been nice to have one more bowling option. I am getting used to five quality bowlers. We have to sit back and accept that we are going through failures, have lost four games on the trot. Got to find out what’s not working out for us as a team.

Somebody needs to step up, we have so many match-winners in the team. This is the time we need to show character. We need to score more runs. We thought 160-170 would have been a good score. We are not used to playing on such wickets this season where 200-plus totals are getting scored easily. We had to play smart cricket and build those partnerships today. Hopefully the result goes in our way (in the upcoming games.)”
