India Legends skipper Sachin Tendulkar has penned a heartfelt message after the team won the Road Safety World Series title on Saturday. Squaring off against the Sri Lanka Legends in the final, Naman Ojha’s brilliant hundred ensured that Tendulkar and his men became two-time Road Safety World Series Champions.

The India Legends got off to a poor start as Nuwan Kulasekara cleaned up the Master Blaster with a peach of a delivery. They lost Suresh Raina shortly after and were under serious pressure. However, promoting Vinay Kumar up the order proved to be a masterstroke.. He played an important knock of 36 and allowed Ojha to unleash as well. The wicketkeeper remained unbeaten on 108 runs from 71 balls as India Legends posted a strong score of 195 runs from their 20 overs.

Sachin praises Naman Ojha for his outstanding performance in Finals

In response, the Sri Lanka Legends struggled to get going and lost Sanath Jayasuriya early on. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and found themselves 85 for 6 in 12.1 overs. As the India Legends bowlers were right on the money. Ishan Jayaratne and Mahela Udawatte put on a good partnership with the former scoring a valiant half-century. Once Udawatte was dismissed, the Sri Lanka Legends tail folded quickly and the India Legends by 33 runs and the trophy.

India Legends captain Sachin Tendulkar reserved special praise for Naman Ojha and Irfan Pathan for their stellar performance in the semi-final win over Australia Legends in Raipur on Thursday. Both Ojha and Irfan starred with the bat as the India Legends reached the finals of Road Safety World Series 2022 with a five-wicket win over Australia Legends.

Chasing a target of 172 runs in 120 balls, India Legends were off to a cautious start as Naman Ojha opened the innings with Sachin Tendulkar. The duo shared a stand of 38 runs for the first wicket. Ojha remained not for 90 off 62 balls (5 sixes). While Irfan smashed an unbeaten 37 off 12 balls (4 sixes) of 50 off just 22 balls to guide a win.

India in finals of Road Safety World Series, led by Sachin Tendulkar

Cameron White and Brad Haddin resumed the Australia Legends’ innings and straightaway got into the act. The pair remained unbeaten, putting up a partnership of 40 runs in 18 balls as they led Australia Legends to a score of 171/5. The fans were eagerly waiting for a match-up between Tendulkar and Brett Lee. But the Master Blaster’s innings came to a premature end in the PowerPlay. Tendulkar attempted a paddle scoop off Nathan Reardon, leaving his leg-stumps exposed. Missed the ball completely to get clean bowled for 10 off 11 balls.

The maestro had resigned from international cricket in 2013 however when you see him batting, it doesn’t look like Sachin has called time on his profession. On Thursday, the 49-year-old crushed 40 runs off only 20 balls against England Legends, including three monstrous sixes.

Opening the batting against England Legends, Tendulkar got off the mark through a single. In the over against Chris Tremlett, Tendulkar chose to go wild as he crushed him for 6,6 and 4. The second six has now gone viral on social media as it saw the Master Blaster moving down the track and crushing it over the boundary fence.

The match between India Legends and England Legends was reduced to 15 overs for each side. Batting first, India Legends posted 170/5. Tendulkar scored 40 while Yuvraj Singh stayed unbeaten on 31 off only 15 balls.

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar will lead defending champions India Legends in the second edition of the Road Safety World Series, starting September 10. The organizers confirmed the availability of the batting great, who was part of the inaugural edition as well. Tendulkar took fans down memory lane last year when he hit 2 half-centuries in 7 matches in the inaugural edition of the Road Safety World Series.

The second edition of RSWS, a 22-day tournament, will be played across various venues. The tournament opener will be held in Kanpur while Raipur will host the two semifinals and the final. Other venues include Indore and Dehradun. New Zealand Legends will be the new team to join the Road Safety World Series.

Sachin Tendulkar to captain India Legends in Road Safety World Series

The organizers are yet to confirm the squads. New Zealand players will join Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh, and England during the event played primarily to create awareness of road safety in the country and around the globe. And the Ministry of Information and Technology and Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India.

Speaking about Road Safety World Series, Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Government of India, said. “The Road Safety World Series is an excellent initiative to create awareness towards road safety through cricket. For that to happen, we have to create awareness among the people. “I strongly believe this series will be able to do and achieve the goal of saving lives on Indian roads.”


Union Sports Minister and former BCCI chief, Anurag Thakur said: “I am sure the Road Safety World Series will drive social change and work as an ideal platform to influence people’s mindset towards their behavior on the road and road safety.”
