The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) is one of the most popular IPL franchises. The franchise has been a part of the IPL since its inception, having competed in all 17 seasons of the lucrative competition. However, it is currently awaiting its first title. Before the IPL 2025 major auctions, which are expected to occur later this month, RCB retained three players: Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal.

RCB will have three Right To Match (RTM) cards available in the mega auctions, and the franchise owners are hoping to bring back as many players as possible. The squad has had a great 2024 season and wants to convert their maiden IPL title with a significant team restructuring from the Mega Auction, as they have the potential to acquire top players from the under-the-hammer roster. Here are the five top-player recommendations for the side to target in the forthcoming 2025 IPL Mega Auction.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul will be one of the targets of the loyal fanbase-backed squad in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction for apparent reasons. Rahul had a fantastic IPL 2016 with RCB. However, he missed the 2017 season due to injuries and was released before the 2018 Mega Auction. He later played for the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and Lucknow Super Giants, but he could return to his home franchise, which has only kept three players, including a colossal purchasing purse.

Rahul has always been liked by the RCB faithful, partly because he is from Bengaluru, and the team is in dire need of a reliable wicketkeeper batter. Fans should anticipate that RCB will bid quite expensively for Rahul in the blockbuster auction. In the 2024 edition, he has made a commendable 520 runs in 14 matches with four half-centuries.

Mitchell Starc

RCB has historically struggled with a reliable bowling attack, which has been overlooked by their dynamic batting lineup, and Mitchell Starc can help address that gap. Starc's ability to perform in high-pressure circumstances and his previous stint with RCB in 2015 suggest he might be the missing piece in RCB's quest for their first IPL victory. His expertise and talent in T20 cricket make him an excellent choice to command their bowling unit.

In IPL 2024, as the most expensive player in the tournament ever, Starc demonstrated his brilliance by collecting crucial wickets and maintaining an exceptional economy rate during playoffs, further cementing his worth to a club needing bowling consistency. In his triumphant 2024 campaign with the Kolkata Knight Riders, he has taken 17 wickets in 14 matches.

Will Jacks

Will Jacks, another major player for RCB in the 2024 season, had a massive influence after replacing Maxwell in the playing XI. Jack's ability to dominate pacers and spinners and his helpful spin bowling may urge RCB to utilise their RTM to keep him. With his swashbuckling style, he can restore the team's batting glory days, as they have the opportunity to win their first title through a restructure in the upcoming Mega Auction.

In eight matches, the 25-year-old English all-rounder scored 230 runs at a fantastic 175.57 strike rate, including a spectacular 41-ball century against the Gujarat Titans.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj, who has been at RCB since 2018, was also included on the list of players revealed ahead of the mega auction. Siraj grabbed 15 wickets in 14 IPL 2024 matches while maintaining a solid economy rate of 9.19 economy. But as they say, every player has a rough patch in their sporting stint; Siraj will be desperate to come back with a bang through the fierce and intense 2025 IPL.

He is well-known for his ability to take wickets with the new ball, but his recent improvements at death bowling make him an invaluable asset. RCB may use their RTM option to bring him back, as they need a reliable Indian pacer who can spearhead the team's bowling attack and align with its goals by being aware of the Indian conditions.

Rachin Ravindran

Rachin Ravindra, the all-rounder from New Zealand, is one of cricket's hottest prospects, making him a priority target for several prominent teams in the forthcoming IPL 2025 big auction. He had a terrific time with CSK throughout the 2024 IPL season, but now that they have opted not to put him on the retention list, RCB might consider him a top-order alternative to Virat Kohli.

Ravindra has the talent and skill to adjust to varied circumstances with the bat and ball, which should serve him well regardless of where he ends up in the next edition. Though he had a mediocre debut IPL sit-in with the Chennai Super Kings by scoring just 222 runs in ten games, his awareness of the Indian conditions would act as the major USP for the team to acquire his services.

<![CDATA[IPL 2025: Players retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2025-players-retained-by-royal-challengers-bengaluru-rcb/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2025-players-retained-by-royal-challengers-bengaluru-rcb/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 12:25:11 GMT

Three times IPL runners-up Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have announced their retention on the retention deadline.

Four out of the last five seasons, including the IPL 2024, RCB reached the playoffs but couldn’t reach the final. They finished as the runners-up in 2009, 2011, and 2016 after losing the finals against Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, respectively.

RCB also participated in the now-defunct Champions League T20 three times, where they reached the semi-finals in the 2010 edition and finished as the runners-up in the 2011 edition.

Although RCB were eliminated from the Eliminator at the IPL 2024, it was one of their great seasons. At the end of their eighth match of the season, RCB won only one and had two points. From that hopeless situation, RCB made a remarkable comeback in the tournament by winning all their last six league-stage games and qualified for the Eliminator in an inspiring way.

South African cricketer Faf du Plessis has been leading RCB since IPL 2022. Only in three matches during the IPL 2023, Virat Kohli led the RCB when Faf played as the impact player.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru player retention

RCB retained three players for INR 37 crore. They retained two capped players and one uncapped player. RCB will start the mega auction with INR 83 crore.

(Capped)

Virat Kohli (Indian): INR 21 Crore

Rajat Patidar (Indian): INR 11 Crore

(Uncapped)

Yash Dayal (Indian): INR 5 Crore

Right-to-Match (RTM) card availability for the mega auction

3 capped players or 2 capped + 1 uncapped players

“Of course, to all the fans and followers of our great game, a massive thank you! Cricket and cricketers wouldn’t be the same without your support and good wishes.”

The guard of honour and the fans’ enthusiastic participation underscored the respect and admiration he commanded.

<![CDATA[IPL 2024: RCB Review: How did RCB overcome their early-season setbacks in the IPL 2024 campaign?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/ipl-2024-rcb-review-how-did-rcb-overcome-their-early-season-setbacks-in-the-ipl-2024-campaign/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/ipl-2024-rcb-review-how-did-rcb-overcome-their-early-season-setbacks-in-the-ipl-2024-campaign/ Fri, 24 May 2024 13:45:44 GMT

Royal Challengers Bengaluru impressive run in the 2024 Indian Premier League came to a halt on Wednesday with a four-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator held in Ahmedabad. Despite being favorites due to their six-match winning streak, RCB fell short as Riyan Parag (36) and Shimron Hetmyer (26) successfully chased down the 173-run target with an over to spare. Nevertheless, RCB can take pride in their season, having risen from the 10th spot on the table to make a strong playoff push.

Despite the eventual defeat, their turnaround from being written off by many was commendable. Throughout the season, RCB had several standout performances that made their campaign memorable. There were numerous moments that captured the attention of fans and analysts alike. From stunning individual feats to crucial team efforts, RCB showcased resilience and talent. Each of these moments contributed to RCB’s thrilling journey, which, despite its early end, left a lasting impression on the tournament.

Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar impresses

He may not have had the ideal start with RCB, but England youngster Will Jacks quickly adapted to the big stage in India. Initially, Jacks struggled with scores of 8 and 7 against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. However, he bounced back impressively in the following game against Kolkata Knight Riders, smashing a 29-ball fifty. A few matches later, Jacks further showcased his talent with an unbeaten century against Gujarat Titans, helping RCB secure their second consecutive win at that point in the season.

Similarly, Rajat Patidar made a significant impact with multiple fifties, tallying five in total, which is his highest in a single season. Patidar provided much-needed flexibility to RCB’s middle-order and consistently stepped up when it mattered most. His contributions, along with Jacks’ resurgence, played crucial roles in RCB’s campaign, highlighting the depth and potential within their squad.

Yash Dayal’s remarkable turnaround

Back in April, Yash Dayal was struggling with his line and length, conceding over 50 runs in consecutive games against SRH and KKR. Despite taking two wickets against KKR, Dayal was particularly expensive in the death overs, giving away six boundaries. However, in the next match against SRH, the 26-year-old found his rhythm and confidence, finishing with impressive figures of 1/18. He built on this performance with disciplined displays against GT (2/21) and DC (3/20).

Dayal’s moment of reckoning came against CSK when he was tasked with defending 16 runs in the final over. Rising to the occasion, he successfully held off the opposition, securing a crucial victory for RCB and ensuring their place in the playoffs. This turnaround highlighted Dayal’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

Cameron Green’s late resurgence

Expectations were high for Cameron Green after RCB acquired the Australian all-rounder for Rs 17.50 crore from Mumbai Indians (MI). Although he showed promise with the ball, Green initially struggled to find form with the bat. However, as RCB began their late-season resurgence, Green’s batting performances also improved. An unbeaten 37 against SRH in Hyderabad, where he also took 2/12, marked the beginning of his turnaround.

He continued this form with a solid 46 against PBKS and an unbeaten 32 against DC. Green’s most impactful innings came against CSK, where his unbeaten 38 played a crucial role in keeping RCB in contention for an IPL playoff spot. Had Green found his rhythm with the bat earlier in the season, RCB might have peaked sooner, potentially changing the course of their campaign.

As Royal Challengers Bengaluru got knocked out of the IPL 2024 Eliminator, it would probably mean the end for Dinesh Karthik’s cricket career. Karthik hinted he might have played his last Indian Premier League match after RCB lost the IPL 2024 Eliminator to Rajasthan on Wednesday. But there is no official announcement of retirement from the player yet.

However, Karthik took off his gloves and acknowledged the applause from the crowd after the heartbreaking defeat in the playoffs match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

DK on his retirement plan

Dinesh Karthik, the seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman, had previously mentioned about the retirement from his cricketing career after the IPL 2024 season. Although he hasn’t officially announced his retirement, his demeanour during the Eliminator suggested otherwise.

An emotional response from crowd

As Karthik walked off the field amidst thunderous applause from the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, emotions ran high among fans and spectators. Moreover, one of the greatest finishers of IPL history, Dinesh Karthik also was seen receiving a Guard of Honour from his teammates.

Reflections on Karthik’s Career

Amid the IPL 2024 Eliminator against Rajasthan Royals, Dinesh Karthik etched his name in the annals of IPL history by becoming the second-most capped player in the league, alongside Rohit Sharma.

Early years

Dinesh Karthik’s IPL journey began with the inaugural season 2008 when he donned the Delhi Daredevils jersey. His early years laid the foundation for a remarkable career in the league.

He started his IPL career with Delhi Capitals and played for them from IPL 2008 to 2010. He moved to Punjab Kings for a year and represented Mumbai Indians in IPL 2012 and 2013. Karthik returned to Delhi for a year in 2014. He had a one-year stint with RCB in 2015. Karthik was part of Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016 and 2017. He was part of Kolkata Knight Riders from IPL 2018 to 2021. The wicketkeeper-batsman led KKR from IPL 2018 to the middle of 2020. He was replaced by Eoin Morgan

One Last Time

Ahead of the 2022 edition of the league, Dinesh Karthik was released by KKR and was available for the IPL Mega Auction. He was bought by RCB for INR 5.5 crore. In the IPL 2022 mega-auction, Karthik returned to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru camp, marking his second stint with the franchise. His role as a finisher proved instrumental in RCB’s campaign.

In IPL 2024

Karthik played 15 matches in IPL 2024, scoring 326 runs at an average of 36.22. He struck at 187.36, pulling off the role of the finisher to perfection. He notched two half-centuries, hitting 27 fours and 22 maximums. With the glove, he took four catches and effected one stumping. Karthik played some memorable knocks during the campaign, but his best came against Sunrisers Hyderabad when he smashed 83 off 35 balls, albeit in a losing cause. In his last match, Karthik scored 11 off 13 deliveries as RCB posted 172 on board.

Karthik played 257 IPL matches, notching 4842 runs and remaining unbeaten 50 times, which is almost once every five innings. His average in the tournament has been a modest 26.32, but his strike rate has been fairly impressive at 135.36. He has scored 22 half-centuries, with the highest score of 97*. He scored 466 fours and 161 sixes, taking 145 catches and making 37 stump outs. His consistency and adaptability have earned him a revered status in the league. Karthik finished in the top 10 run-getters list in the history of the IPL.

He is the league’s second best wicketkeeper behind MS Dhoni with 174 dismissals – 145 catches, 37 stumpings. Dhoni heads with 190 dismissals – 148 catches, 42 stumpings.

Karthik formerly played for Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He also captained Kolkata Knight Riders between 2018 and 2020.

The IPL 2024 Eliminator witnessed an enthralling showdown between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), with both teams battling it out for a spot in the Qualifier 2 encounter. Skipper Sanju Samson’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss set the stage for a captivating clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Sanju Samson’s tactical decision to opt for fielding first aimed to capitalize on the dew factor, a crucial consideration in night matches. While RCB retained their lineup, RR welcomed back Shimron Hetmyer into their playing XI, adding depth to their batting order.

First Half Highlights: RCB’s Innings

RCB’s openers, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, adopted a cautious approach in the initial overs, respecting Trent Boult’s swing. Their focus on rotating the strike while seeking boundaries laid a solid foundation for the innings. A strategic time-out marked the conclusion of the first phase of RCB’s innings, with the team posting a steady total of 56/1. The departure of du Plessis, caught splendidly by Rovman Powell, brought Cameron Green to the crease, adding depth to RCB’s batting lineup.

Despite losing Kohli’s wicket to Yuzvendra Chahal, RCB’s middle order, led by Cameron Green and Rajat Patidar, displayed resilience, stitching together crucial partnerships. However, Ravichandran Ashwin’s pivotal oversaw the departure of Green and Glenn Maxwell, altering the momentum in RR’s favour.

Second Half Highlights: RR’s Bowling Display

Despite facing challenges, Avesh Khan’s persistent bowling paid dividends, as he accounted for the dismissals of Patidar and, later, Dinesh Karthik. A controversial umpiring decision spared Karthik, prolonging RCB’s innings.

Death Overs Drama

Mahipal Lomror and Karthik sought to propel RCB’s total with aggressive stroke play as the match approached its climax. However, Avesh Khan’s fiery spell yielded crucial breakthroughs, ensuring RR restricted RCB to a competitive total of 172/8.

The eve of the IPL 2024 Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was marked by intrigue and speculation. Amidst the anticipation of the Royal Derby clash, an unexpected turn of events unfolded, raising questions about the cancellation of RCB’s practice session and its underlying reasons.

Pre-Eliminator Drama

As the cricketing world awaited the high-stakes showdown, the spotlight shifted to an unforeseen development involving the apprehension of four individuals by the Gujarat Police at the Ahmedabad airport. The timing of this incident, just before the crucial match, added a layer of uncertainty to the proceedings.

The Gujarat Cricket Association’s Clarification

Anil Patel, the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), played a pivotal role in dispelling the rumours surrounding RCB’s practice session cancellation. His statements shed light on the true reason behind the decision, providing clarity amidst the confusion.

“There was no terror threat. We had made provision for both the Rajasthan Royals and RCB to practice at the Gujarat College ground. RCB were supposed to practice from 2 to 5 pm, before they changed it to 3-6 pm, as the light is good till 6.30 pm in the summer in Ahmedabad. RCB skipped their practice session due to the prevailing heatwave in the city. We had told RCB that they can use the indoor practice facility there, or at the indoor facility at the Narendra Modi Stadium. However, RCB didn’t want to practice because of the heatwave,” stated Patel.

Details of Practice Session Arrangements

Patel provided insights into the logistics of the practice sessions initially planned for RR and RCB at the Gujarat College ground. Despite accommodating RCB’s scheduling preferences, the practice session was ultimately cancelled due to weather conditions.

Initially, RCB’s practice slot was scheduled from 2-5 pm, but it was later shifted to 3-6 pm, considering the ample daylight available in Ahmedabad during the summer season, lasting until around 6:30 pm. Patel disclosed that RCB decided to forgo their practice session due to the prevailing heatwave in the city.

Indoor Practice Facilities Offered

Given the scorching temperatures, the GCA offered RCB the use of indoor practice facilities at the Gujarat College ground or the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. However, RCB declined these options, opting to abstain from practice altogether.

The Mayhem in Chinnaswamy! In an absolute Indian T20 League classic, Bengaluru has defied all odds and pulled off the impossible, edging out Chennai to secure a playoff spot. Despite the looming threat of rain and a brief passing shower, Bengaluru needed to win by at least 18 runs but surpassed expectations by securing a 27-run victory. This remarkable triumph, marked by six consecutive wins, clinched them the fourth and final playoff berth.

Spare a thought for Chennai, who staged a roaring comeback in the latter stages of the match. The formidable duo of Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni nearly snatched victory, but it wasn’t meant to be. As a result, the reigning champions are now out of the competition, marking a dramatic end to their campaign.

Understanding Adjusted On-batter Impact on CSK Innings

What a game this was for the home side, Bengaluru. Backed by a vociferous crowd, their players stepped up and got the job done. They had a target to defend, and only one number mattered: 201. They managed to keep Chennai 10 runs short of that mark. The hosts got off to a fine start with the ball, as Glenn Maxwell dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad on the very first delivery and soon after claimed Daryl Mitchell.

Despite some resistance in the middle, Bengaluru picked up multiple wickets in quick succession, almost losing the plot in the final four overs. Yash Dayal bowled a pressure-packed final over after both Mohammed Siraj and Lockie Ferguson had conceded heavily in the previous two overs. Dayal gave away a six off the first ball but held his nerve, conceding just one more run. This performance marked a great redemption story for the pacer after his previous season’s mishap against Rinku Singh.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Chennai, and perhaps this was MS Dhoni’s last dance a speculation we face almost every year. Dhoni and the team gave it their all but were undone by a few injuries and some great cricket from the opposition in the latter half of the season. Rachin Ravindra had a modest maiden season in the Indian T20 League, but he showed his prowess in the big game. Alongside Ajinkya Rahane, he steadied the ship after losing two early wickets.

Once Rahane fell, Rachin had to take on the bowlers more aggressively, especially since Shivam Dube couldn’t get going. It all went downhill when Rachin was run out, triggering a mini-collapse and leaving Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni with too much to do. The duo did manage to hit a few lusty blows, but Dhoni getting out in the 20th over was the final nail in the coffin.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru reminded us why sports are so unpredictable and thrilling. In a jaw-dropping turn of events, RCB, led by Faf du Plessis, made an incredible run to the playoffs by stringing together six consecutive wins. Their most remarkable feat was ending the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a must-win IPL 2024 league game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 18. With a phenomenal batting display, RCB posted 218 runs and defended their target by 27 runs, effectively stopping CSK from making it to the playoffs.

Miraculous Run to Playoffs

RCB orchestrated what might be the greatest comeback in the history of the Indian Premier League by winning six consecutive matches to secure a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs. Led by Faf du Plessis, RCB defeated Chennai Super Kings by 27 runs in a virtual eliminator at their home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. They will now compete in the IPL 2024 Eliminator.

From managing only one win in their first eight matches to clinching seven victories in their final 14 games, RCB never lost the unwavering support of their fans. The franchise dedicated this historic win to their loyal supporters, the 12th Man Army, who stood by the team through thick and thin.

Match Build-Up

The match between RCB and CSK was highly anticipated, with significant stakes for both teams. RCB needed a victory to secure a playoff spot, while CSK aimed to defend their title by qualifying for the playoffs. The weather added an element of unpredictability, with rain threatening to delay the game. However, the excellent drainage system at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium ensured the match started on time despite a brief shower before the toss.

RCB’s Batting Performance

Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli set the tone for RCB with a stellar opening partnership. Du Plessis initially struggled, but Kohli was aggressive from the start. After Kohli’s dismissal, Faf du Plessis took charge, allowing Rajat Patidar to settle in at No. 3. Unfortunately, du Plessis was run out bizarrely when Mitchell Santner’s fingertips deflected a straight drive onto the stumps. Despite this setback, Patidar and Cameron Green forged a crucial partnership, adding 71 runs in just 28 balls. Their efforts were instrumental in pushing RCB’s total to a formidable 218.

Virat Kohli’s Record-Breaking Innings

Kohli’s innings were nothing short of spectacular. He scored 47 off 29 balls, including four sixes and three boundaries, bringing his sixes tally for the season to 35. His fearless batting and milestone of becoming the first player to score 3000 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium energized the team and the fans.

CSK’s Struggles in the Chase

CSK’s chase got off to a shaky start with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s early dismissal for a duck. Shivam Dube, one of their key batters, also struggled, managing only seven off 15 balls. Despite these setbacks, CSK posted 58 for 2 in the powerplay but lost momentum in the middle overs, scoring just 71 runs and losing four wickets.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja’s spirited partnership provided a glimmer of hope for CSK. Coming together at 129 for 6, they added 61 runs in just 26 balls, bringing CSK close to the target. Dhoni’s six off the first ball of the final over sent waves of excitement through the stadium. However, Yash Dayal’s next delivery removed Dhoni, leaving Jadeja with too much to do.

Match Analysis

Several key moments and decisions shaped the outcome of this match. Kohli and du Plessis’s opening partnership laid a solid foundation, while the middle-order contributions from Patidar and Green were pivotal. On the bowling front, RCB’s ability to take wickets at crucial junctures and Dayal’s last-over heroics sealed the victory.

The match was rich in statistics and records. Kohli’s record for the most runs at a single venue, and his sixes tally were highlights. RCB’s total of 218 was one of their highest of the season, and their six-match winning streak was unprecedented. Yash Dayal’s redemption story also added to the narrative.

Impact on the Tournament

RCB’s victory secured their place in the playoffs, making them the first team to do so with 14 points. This late surge has positioned them as strong contenders for the title. For CSK, the defeat was a significant blow, as they needed to avoid a big loss to qualify for the playoffs. Their title defense ended abruptly, highlighting the ruthless nature of the competition.

As RCB heads to the playoffs, its focus will be on maintaining its winning momentum. Its next challenge will be the Eliminator in Ahmedabad, where it will face either Rajasthan or Hyderabad. The team’s strategies and player performances will be crucial in determining its further progress in the tournament.

IPL 2024: RCB vs CSK, Match 68: Who said what at the toss?

Faf du Plessis – We would have fielded as well, but we put up a good score when we batted first last. Losing the toss isn’t ideal, but we’ll take a lot of confidence from the last 5 games. The set-up is great, last match before the knock-out stage, the scenario is nicely set-up and we’re happy to play our last league game in front of our fans. Not thinking a lot, we’ll take it as it comes and do our best.

Ruturaj Gaikwad – We’ll bowl first. The wicket looks good, conditions are overcast and we will look to make the most of the movement in the first 2-3 overs. It looks a bit damp, but we’ll go with great intent. Every game in the IPL is must win, nothing changes for us, we’ll take it ball-by-ball, try and win the small processes. We’ve won some crucial games to go ahead of the pack in the middle. Just one change – Moeen isn’t available, Santner replaces him.
