India vs. Australia has been one of the most exciting rivalries in cricket history, delivering unforgettable matches since their first encounter in 1947-48. The contrasting playing conditions in the two countries add a layer of intrigue, making every series unique. Over the decades, many Indian batters have risen to the challenge, dominating Australian bowlers at home and away.

Here’s a look at the top five Indian batters who have scored the most runs against Australia in Test cricket.

5. Virat Kohli – 2042 Runs

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has an outstanding record against Australia across formats. In Test cricket, he ranks fifth among Indians with the most runs against the Aussies.

In 25 matches, Kohli has amassed 2042 runs at an average of 47.48, including eight centuries (the second-most by an Indian vs. Australia) and five half-centuries. His highest score of 186 reflects his dominance with the bat. Kohli's leadership was historic; under him, India secured their first-ever Test series victory in Australia in 2018-19.

4. Cheteshwar Pujara – 2074 Runs

Known for his grit and resilience, Cheteshwar Pujara has been a thorn in Australia’s side. Between 2010 and 2023, Pujara played 25 Tests against them, scoring 2074 runs at an average of 49.38.

Pujara was instrumental in India’s victories in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series, emerging as the highest scorer in 2016-17 and 2018-19, and the second-highest in 2020-21. His tally includes five centuries and 11 half-centuries, proving his consistency across challenging conditions.

3. Rahul Dravid – 2143 Runs

Rahul Dravid, often referred to as The Wall, was a dependable batter for India in tough situations. Against Australia, he played 32 Tests between 1996 and 2012, scoring 2143 runs at an average of 39.68.

Dravid's contributions included two centuries and 13 half-centuries. His memorable 233 at Adelaide in 2003, and his partnership with VVS Laxman at Eden Gardens in 2001, underline his significance in India’s Test cricket history.

2. VVS Laxman – 2434 Runs

VVS Laxman had a special connection with playing against Australia, producing some of his career-best performances. He scored 2434 runs in 29 Tests between 1998 and 2012 at an impressive average of 49.67.

His innings of 281 at Eden Gardens in 2001 remains one of the greatest Test knocks of all time, helping India achieve a famous comeback win. Laxman’s six centuries and 12 half-centuries against Australia further highlight his ability to perform under pressure.

1. Sachin Tendulkar – 3630 Runs

The Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 3630 runs against Australia, the most by any Indian and second-most overall in Test cricket. Tendulkar played 39 Tests against Australia from 1991 to 2013, averaging 55 with 11 centuries and 16 half-centuries.

His innings of 241 not out in Sydney in 2004 showcased his mastery over the Australian bowlers. Tendulkar’s consistency and ability to rise to the occasion made him the Aussies’ biggest challenge for over two decades.

<![CDATA[Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Why Perth remains a tough start for India against Australia?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bordergavaskar-trophy-why-perth-remains-a-tough-start-for-india-against-australia/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bordergavaskar-trophy-why-perth-remains-a-tough-start-for-india-against-australia/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 11:21:02 GMT

As the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, Team India is set to kick off their campaign with a daunting opener in Perth, a venue historically known for its pace, bounce, and challenge for subcontinental teams. From memorable centuries by Sachin Tendulkar to a remarkable win in 2008, India’s encounters in Perth have been a mix of highs and lows. But as Rohit Sharma’s side aims for a 4-0 series victory to directly qualify for the World Test Championship final, starting in Perth could pose a unique challenge.

Early encounters at the WACA ground

The WACA Ground in Perth, often described as Australia’s fastest and most intimidating pitch, has long been a difficult arena for Indian teams raised on slower, lower surfaces. India’s journey at the WACA began in 1977 under captain Bishan Singh Bedi, who led the team to a competitive performance despite a narrow 2-wicket loss. A century by Sunil Gavaskar and a strong showing by Mohinder Amarnath showcased India's skill, even though Australia eventually chased down the target.

One of India’s most unforgettable performances in Perth came in 1992 when an 18-year-old Sachin Tendulkar scored a magnificent 114 against a formidable Australian attack. Despite the team’s overall struggle, Tendulkar’s knock remains one of the most iconic innings in his career, symbolizing India's fighting spirit and skill on foreign soil. Yet, Australia secured a commanding 300-run victory in that match.

India’s landmark victory in 2008

India made history at the WACA in 2008, breaking Australia’s 16-match winning streak with a stunning 72-run victory. The match saw exceptional performances from Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and an inspired young Ishant Sharma, who famously troubled Australian captain Ricky Ponting with a memorable spell. This win not only marked India’s first victory in Perth but also underscored their resilience amid controversies surrounding the previous Sydney Test, known as the “Monkeygate” incident.

The win in Perth was a testament to India’s growing confidence in overseas conditions and set a benchmark for future Indian teams touring Australia.

The move to optus stadium

Since 2018, the Perth Test has been held at the Optus Stadium, which replaced the WACA due to its modern facilities and higher seating capacity. However, the fast, bouncy nature of the pitch remains a challenge. India’s first Test at the new venue, in 2018, saw Virat Kohli’s team fall short by 146 runs despite a gritty century by Kohli himself. Although India ultimately won the series 2-1, the loss in Perth revealed that the city remains a challenging ground for Indian teams.

The Optus Stadium pitch demands precision and adaptability, qualities that will be crucial for India’s top-order batters. With a potent Australian pace attack, including stars like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, India’s batsmen will need to bring their best footwork and technique to counter the conditions.

Can India overcome the Perth barrier in 2024?

Rohit Sharma’s team heads into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener with high stakes: a 4-0 series victory would ensure their direct qualification to the World Test Championship final. Perth's unique conditions, with a surface favoring fast bowlers, present a significant obstacle. The WACA and Optus Stadium have witnessed some of India's most memorable and challenging moments, creating a mixed legacy for Indian cricket.

Australia’s dominance on this surface, coupled with India’s historically inconsistent performances in Perth, could be a psychological barrier. But recent years have seen Indian teams adapt better to such challenges, especially with a stronger pace attack that includes bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who could be well-suited for the Perth pitch.

The Perth Test will be an early litmus test for Rohit Sharma and his men, who aim to make history on Australian soil. Starting a high-stakes series at one of the toughest venues may not be ideal, but it could set the tone for India’s performance in the series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024 promises a thrilling contest between two formidable teams, with Perth’s fast and bouncy pitch adding to the excitement and challenge. As India take on Australia at this iconic venue, fans around the world will be watching to see if Team India can overcome the Perth hurdle once again.

England batter Joe Root has shared his thoughts on the possibility of surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become the highest run-scorer in Test cricket. Currently in excellent form during the ongoing Test series between England and the West Indies, Root scored a remarkable century in the second innings of the second Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. This performance has elevated him to the eighth spot on the list of all-time Test run-scorers, surpassing West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

With all the players ranked above Root now retired, he has a strong opportunity to advance further up the list. As of now, Root is the leading run-scorer in Test cricket among contemporary players, significantly ahead of his closest rival, Steve Smith.

Joe Root speaks out on targeting Sachin Tendulkar’s record

In a chat with Sky Sports, Joe Root reflected on his Test cricket journey and his place among the all-time greats. “When I walked out at Nagpur, I never imagined reaching this level. I was just happy to play one game. To be mentioned alongside such incredible players feels surreal, like you’re waiting to wake up. I’m very humbled, but it’s a nice feeling,” Root shared.

The interview, hosted by former England fast bowler Stuart Broad, touched on whether Root could surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the No. 1 run-scorer. Root responded that he needs to stay focused and not think too far ahead.

“Who knows? I might hit a lean patch after all this talk,” Root joked. “Honestly, you never know what will happen in the next few games. We just need to keep working hard, step by step, and see where it leads.”

Joe Root: England’s all-time leading run-scorer

Joe Root is one of the most successful batters in cricket history. To date, he has amassed 11,940 runs in 142 Tests at an average of 49.95, with 32 centuries and 62 fifties.

Among English cricketers, Root is the leading run-scorer overall. He has accumulated 19,355 runs in 345 international matches at an average of 48.26. The second-highest English run-scorer, Alastair Cook, trails Root by nearly 4,000 runs.

<![CDATA['I would say that not even Tendulkar and myself would come close to that talent' Brian Lara names most talented player]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/i-would-say-that-not-even-tendulkar-and-myself-would-come-close-to-that-talent-brian-lara-names-most-talented-player/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/i-would-say-that-not-even-tendulkar-and-myself-would-come-close-to-that-talent-brian-lara-names-most-talented-player/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 05:04:00 GMT

Two of cricket’s finest batters, India’s Sachin Tendulkar and West Indies’ Brian Lara, broke numerous records during their illustrious careers, many of which still stand. Tendulkar is the all-time leading run-scorer in both Tests (15,921) and ODIs (18,426), while Lara holds the record for the highest score by a batter in Tests (400) and First Class Cricket (501). Despite their mutual admiration, Lara recently named a player he believes was even more naturally gifted than himself and Tendulkar: his former teammate Carl Hooper.

Lara’s admiration for Carl Hooper

In a candid revelation, Lara expressed his awe for Hooper’s raw talent, stating, “In terms of raw talent, Carl Hooper was the best player I have ever seen.” He also mentioned that legendary West Indies batter Vivian Richards held Hooper in high regard. “Viv Richards never discouraged anyone because he didn’t want them to be great like him. His sternness was just who he was, but he never wanted you not to do well. Viv loved Carl much more than he loved me, that’s for sure. But the way Viv shows love didn’t resonate with Carl,” Lara added.

“Carl was easily one of the best players I’ve ever seen. I would say that not even Tendulkar and myself would come close to that talent. Separate Carl’s career from playing to captaining and his numbers are very different. As a captain he averaged near to 50, so he enjoyed the responsibility. It’s sad that only as a captain did he fulfil his true potential,” Lara wrote.

“There were players in my time who challenged, or at least went past the 300 mark – Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya. They were pretty much aggressive players,” Lara told The Daily Mail.

“How many aggressive players do you have playing today? Especially in the England team. Zak Crawley and Harry Brook. Maybe in the Indian team? Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill. If they find the right situation, the records could be broken – both of them,” he added.

Potential record breakers

While reflecting on his career, Lara also identified current players who could potentially break his record of 400 runs in a Test innings. Recently, Lara picked two players each from England and India whom he believes have the capability to surpass his monumental score. Although he did not specify the names in this particular interview, his previous mentions often include talents like Joe Root and Ben Stokes from England, and Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from India, considering their remarkable batting prowess.

Lara’s acknowledgment of these modern-day cricketers highlights the evolution of the game and the continuous emergence of extraordinary talent. His admiration for Carl Hooper and recognition of current players underline the rich legacy of cricket and its enduring appeal.

<![CDATA[On this day: India's first One Day International at Leeds fifty years ago]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/on-this-day-indias-first-one-day-international-at-leeds-fifty-years-ago/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/on-this-day-indias-first-one-day-international-at-leeds-fifty-years-ago/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 16:59:44 GMT

A One Day International (ODI) is a limited-overs cricket match between two international teams, each with ODI status given by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Unlike Test matches, ODIs have a set number of overs per team, and each team plays only one innings.

India played their first ODI in 1974. Since then, 255 players have represented India in ODIs. India has played 1,055 ODIs, with 559 wins, 443 losses, 9 ties, and 44 no results. Their first series win was against England in 1981.

They won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and 2011, and were runners-up in 2003 and 2023. India also won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 and shared the title with Sri Lanka in 2002. They have won the Asia Cup seven times.

Sachin Tendulkar debuting at 16 is India’s youngest ODI player, while Farokh Engineer debuting at 36 is the oldest. Anil Kumble is India’s top wicket taker in ODIs with 337 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar is the top run scorer with 18,426 runs and holds the record for most ODIs played (463) and most Man of the Match awards.

Rohit Sharma’s 264 runs against Sri Lanka is the highest individual ODI score. Sourav Ganguly holds the highest score by an Indian in a World Cup match with 183 runs against Sri Lanka.

India’s irst ODI match

On this day in 1974, India played its first ODI against England at Leeds, marking an important moment in Indian cricket history. Although ODIs started in 1971, it took three years for India to join this format.

England won the toss and decided to field first. India began steadily, with openers Sunil Gavaskar and Sudhir Naik putting together a 44-run partnership. Naik was the first to go, dismissed for 18 by Robin Jackman. Gavaskar followed soon after, bowled for 28 by Geoff Arnold.

Gundappa Vishwanath was out for a low score by Bob Woolmer, leaving India at 60/3. Ajit Wadekar and Farookh Engineer then had a 70-run partnership. Engineer was bowled by Chris Old for 32. Wadekar, who scored India’s first ODI fifty, was eventually out for 67 to Jackman at 181/5.

After Eknath Solkar’s dismissal, Brijesh Patel and Syed Abid Ali added 52 runs, taking India to 246. Ali was dismissed by Woolmer for 17. Patel’s 82 off 78 balls helped India reach a total of 265.

Chris Old was England’s best bowler, taking 3-43. Arnold, Woolmer, and Jackman each took two wickets, and Tony Greig took one.

England’s chase turning points and key players

Chasing 266, England’s Dennis Amiss was out for 20 by Eknath Solkar, leaving England at 37/1. David Lloyd and John Edrich steadied the innings with a 47-run partnership before Solkar dismissed Lloyd for 34. Mike Denness was dismissed for 8 by Madan Lal, caught by Srinivas Venkataraghavan.

England was at 96/3, but Edrich and Keith Fletcher built an 83-run stand. Bedi dismissed Fletcher for 39. Edrich, ten runs short of a century, was the fifth wicket to fall at 212, dismissed by Venkataraghavan.

Despite Tony Greig’s dismissal for 40 by Bedi, Alan Knott (15) and Chris Old (5) guided England to a four-wicket victory.

Eknath Solkar was India’s best bowler with 2-31.

Although India lost their first ODI, they have improved steadily over the years and by the 2020s, they became a formidable force in international cricket.

India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win marked the end of an era as captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20 cricket. Their coach, Rahul Dravid, also ended his tenure on a high note, finally achieving a world title.

After the celebrations, Rohit Sharma took to Instagram to write a heartfelt note. He praised Dravid for his efforts and highlighted how, despite his legendary status, Dravid was always approachable for the players.

Rohit Sharma’s heartfelt note

“You are an absolute stalwart of this game but left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time,” said the Indian captain.

Rohit shared a funny story in his note, mentioning how his wife always called Dravid his “work-wife.” Despite the joke, Rohit expressed pride in his relationship with the cricket legend.

“I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I’m lucky to get to call you that too,” Rohit Sharma added.

Rahul Dravid’s legacy

Even though Rahul Dravid had an incredible playing career, he never won an ICC trophy. Unlike Sachin Tendulkar, who won the ODI World Cup 2011, Dravid and many other legendary players missed out on a World Cup title. Rohit Sharma is happy he could achieve this for Dravid, as India won the T20 World Cup 2024.

“This was the only thing missing from your arsenal and I’m so happy that we got to achieve it together. Rahul bhai it has been an absolute privilege to get to call you my confidant, my coach and my friend,” Rohit Sharma concluded.

Indian cricket fans are looking forward to a new generation of players who can meet the high expectations set by Rohit Sharma and his teammates. They hope these players will bring even more success. The BCCI has not yet announced India’s new Head Coach.

Life comes full circle for Indian cricket in the West Indies. From our lows in the 2007 ODI World Cup to becoming a cricketing powerhouse and winning the T20WC in 2024. Very happy for my friend Rahul Dravid, who missed out on the 2011 World Cup win but his contribution to this T20 World Cup victory has been immense. I am so so happy for him,” Tendulkar posted on X.

“What can one say about @ImRo45? Superb captaincy! To put the 2023 ODI World Cup loss behind and to keep all our players motivated towards the T20 World Cup is commendable. @Jaspritbumrah93’s Player of the Tournament award as well as @imVkohli’s Player of the Match award are both well-deserved. They were just superb when it mattered. Along with Rahul, Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour also made their international debuts in 1996. It was wonderful to see Team India excel under the guidance of this class of ’96. A total team effort. Hearty congratulations to all the players, coaches, support staff, and @BCCI,” he again added.

Along with him, veterans like Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir also congratulated the Indian team.

“Congratulations Team India on becoming the T20 World Champions. Been the best team in the tournament remaining unbeaten throughout,” the current head of the National Cricket Academy VVS Laxman wrote on X.

“Great composure and character shown by the team to win this from the situation we were in with 5 overs remaining. Every player deserves credit for giving it their all and rising to the occasion and wonderfully led by Rohit,” he said.

Former head coach Anil Kumble and India captain wrote, “Congratulations team India! Wonderful victory.” Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also lauded all the players for winning the T20 World Cup.
