England Women delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Scotland Women by ten wickets in their Group B encounter at Sharjah in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Chasing a modest total of 109, the English openers made light work of the target, reaching it in just 10 overs. This win cements England’s place at the top of the Group B points table, having won all three matches so far.

Safe start for Scotland but struggle against English bowlers

After Scotland Women opted to bat first, openers Saskia Horley and Sarah Bryce provided a steady start, reaching 29/0 at the end of the powerplay. Horley was the first to depart after a 38-run partnership, dismissed for 13 by Nat Sciver-Brunt.

Wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce fought to stabilize the innings but fell for 27 off 31 balls, stumped by Amy Jones off Sophie Ecclestone’s bowling. Captain Kathryn Bryce took charge with a determined 33 off 28 balls, including four boundaries, but received little support from the other end. Scotland Women finished with 109/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

England women’s bowlers dominate

Among the English bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone was outstanding, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs in her four overs. Ecclestone's efforts, along with contributions from Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean, kept the Scottish batters in check. Scotland’s innings was further dented as captain Kathryn Bryce’s resistance ended when she was bowled by Dean.

Alisa Lister provided a brief spark, hitting the only six for Scotland in the tournament, but was dismissed for 11, leaving Scotland with a sub-par total.

English openers make easy work of the chase

England’s opening duo of Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge came out with attacking intent, and by the end of the powerplay, they had already reached 66/0. Both openers completed their half-centuries in style, with Wyatt-Hodge hitting 51* off 26 balls (seven boundaries) and Bouchier smashing 62* off 34 balls (12 boundaries). The English duo wrapped up the match in just 10 overs without losing a wicket, underlining their dominance.

This commanding win takes England Women to the top of Group B, with three wins from three matches and a net run rate of +1.716. South Africa Women, who have played four matches, also have six points but with a slightly lower net run rate of +1.382. Meanwhile, West Indies Women, with four points from three matches and a net run rate of +1.708, must secure a victory in their upcoming match against England Women to keep their hopes alive for a semi-final berth.

ENG-W vs SCO-W Match Preview

There just three more group phase matches left in this tournament, and this is the final game for Scotland Women, who will be determined to put on a strong performance. Whether England Women can enable them to do so remains to be seen, but in their most recent game, there was proof that Heather Knight's side is finding strong performance levels that will be difficult to stop! Injuries to two of Australia's top players on Friday will give England Women a boost, but they will also be wary of putting players at risk in this match.

In a Group B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies Women claimed their first win by comfortably beating Scotland Women by six wickets at Dubai. After restricting Scotland to 99/8 in 20 overs, the Caribbean side chased the target in just 11.4 overs, losing four wickets in the process.

Afy Fletcher's three-wicket haul stifles Scotland

West Indies' spinner Afy Fletcher was the standout performer, claiming three crucial wickets for just 22 runs. Fletcher's disciplined bowling in the middle overs broke the backbone of Scotland's batting lineup. She dismissed key players Ailsa Lister (26), Priyanaz Chatterji (0), and captain Kathryn Bryce (25), ensuring that Scotland couldn't accelerate their scoring after a solid start.

Qiana Joseph's counter-attack leads West Indies to victory

West Indies lost early wickets in the chase, with their top order faltering. However, Qiana Joseph's counter-attacking knock of 31 runs off 18 balls turned the game in favor of her team. She helped West Indies recover from the loss of three wickets within single digits, setting up the chase for Deandra Dottin (28*) and Chinelle Henry (18*) to finish off the game with ease.

Kathryn Bryce and Ailsa Lister's partnership not enough for Scotland

Scotland’s captain Kathryn Bryce (25) and wicketkeeper-batter Ailsa Lister (26) forged a crucial 46-run partnership for the third wicket after early setbacks. Despite their efforts, Scotland struggled to build momentum, with the West Indies bowlers applying constant pressure. A few dropped catches gave them brief hope, but ultimately, they were unable to post a competitive total.

West Indies finished the chase in 11.4 overs, securing a much-needed victory and gaining confidence for the upcoming matches in the tournament.

Openers fell early

The Scottish batters fought hard in the first half of the first innings. At the end of the powerplay, they scored 25/2. Although both the openers, Saskia Horley (11) and Sarah Bryce (2), were dismissed cheaply, Captain Kathryn Bryce and Ailsa Lister had a good partnership.

Bryce and Lister had a good partnership

For the crucial third wicket, Bryce and Lister added 46 runs. Although they were not fast scorers, their slow partnership created a tense situation for the Caribbean players. Also, it should be noted that West Indies dropped Lister three times before Afy Fletcher dismissed her in the 13th over for 26 runs off 33 balls.

Afy Fletcher took three wickets

In the 13th over, Fletcher took wickets in two consecutive deliveries by dismissing Lister and Priyanaz Chatterji (0). In her next over, Fletcher dismissed captain Bryce for 25 off 31 balls.

There were no other 20+ scores for the Scottish side. They were restricted to a two-digit total. While most of the Caribbean bowlers were disciplined, Fletcher took three wickets for 22 runs in her four overs.

Three out of the top four were dismissed cheaply

In reply, West Indies lost three out of their first four batters in single-digit scores. Captain Hayley Matthews (8), her opening partner Stafanie Taylor (4), and Shemaine Campbelle (2) couldn’t add much.

Qiana Joseph's style helped the West Indies to chase comfortably

However, No. 4 Qiana Joseph’s counter-attacking style helped the Caribbean team not come under pressure in any situation. While Joseph scored 31 off 18 balls, Deandra Dottin (28*) and Chinelle Henry (18*) comfortably finished the game.

Among the Scottish bowlers, only Olivia Bell managed to claim more than one wicket (3-0-18-2).

West Indies women face Scotland women in a crucial Group B match, as both teams look to get their World T20 campaigns back on track after suffering crushing defeats in their opening matches. Scotland's women were battered by Bangladesh in their first match, while the West Indies women were crushed by last year's finalist South Africa in their opener. The West Indies cannot afford consecutive losses, especially against minnows like Scotland. And, for their own sake, the Scottish women will aim to deliver a complete performance against the West Indies.

Sarah Bryce’s fighting knock not enough for scotland

Scotland's hopes rested on the shoulders of wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce, who played a valiant unbeaten knock of 49 off 52 balls. However, she received little support from her teammates, with only skipper Kathryn Bryce (11) and Priyanaz Chatterji (11) reaching double digits.
