After intense and scintillating clashes with the best women's teams in the cricket space, the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup draws its curtains with New Zealand scalping their first-ever title against a promising South African side. In summary of their experience and the emerging players' squad, the White Ferns have surpassed the ten robust arsenals needed to win this tournament after being two-time runners-up.

As mentioned earlier, the tournament has seen the clash of best vs best, with many promising players displaying impeccable calibre and intent. By this, all these players deserve to be a part of one team, which implies their performance. That said, here's the Best Playing XI, the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup edition.

1.Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa)

Laura Wolvaardt has been the face of South Africa's top-order batting, with her captaincy skills being the cherry on the top. Leading her Proteas side for the first time and leading to their second-consecutive Women's T20 World Cup is no minor deal. Her stint of 223 runs in six matches, with a half-century and an average of over 45, has made her the highest run-scorer of the ninth edition of the tournament.

2. Tazmin Brits (South Africa)

Runners-up South Africa's major positive takeaway would be their batting performance, and it is no surprise that the openers have created the foundation for it. With the opening captain, Laura Wolvaardt, the second opener, also fulfilled the expectations in the form of Tazmin Brits. She helped bolster the batting and gave the team the attacking start desired. In her six-match tournament stint, she has made 187 runs, averaging over 38 and one half-century.

3. Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (England)

Dannielle Wyatt has associated with the women's English side as a reliable run-getter. As it implies, she has helped the side make some runs in their group-stage end run. She has scored 151 runs in just four matches, at a commendable average of over 50.

4. Sophie Devine (New Zealand) (Captain)

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine is one of the few women's cricket circle players representing her national side in all the Women's T20 World Cup tournaments. As an experienced campaigner, Devine ended her captaincy stint on a high by leading their White Ferns side to their first-ever Women's T20 World Cup title. Making her the captain of this Best XI squad is a no-brainer. She has made 116 runs in six matches at an average of over 30 in the tournament.

5. Amelia Kerr (New Zealand)

Amelia Kerr has got her recognition for her all-rounder ability. But, this time, her bowling expertise did the trick for the triumphant New Zealand side in the tournament. Kerr has helped her side scalp crucial wickets at the right game time. Being the highest wicket-taker of the tournament, she has taken 15 wickets in just six matches, with one four-wicket haul and made 135 runs

6. Alyssa Healy (Australia) (Wicketkeeper)

Though Alyssa Healy got injured mid-way through the tournament, Alyssa Healy deserves to be on this list. Dealing with the slow and turning pitches, she has made vital decisions in restricting the opposition batters to minimal scores, considering the intensity of the T20I format. In her short three-match stint, she has made 67 runs but has a noteworthy strike rate and an average of over 145 and 34, respectively.

7. Afy Fletcher (West Indies)

Though the 2016 West Indies champions couldn't convert a triumph after a stellar performance, Afy Fletcher is one of the players behind the Carribean's side performance. The right-arm leg spinner dominated in the spin-friendly conditions of UAE and scalped ten wickets in just five matches.

8. Annabel Sutherland (Australia)

Annabel Sutherland did her usual business of being the go-to spin option for the Aussies side. Sutherland deserves to be the second-leading spinner, thanks to her performance in the tournament. She has taken nine wickets in five matches, signifying her impact with the ball and spin.

9. Rosemary Mair (New Zealand)

Rosemary Mair from the champion New Zealand side did the trick by delivering quick and pace deliveries to the batters. In just six appearances of the tournament, she has scalped ten wickets at an economy of just five, with one four-wicket haul.

10. Nonukuleko Mlaba (South Africa)

Nonukuleko Mlaba from the South African side would help robusten this Best XI spinmeister's attack. Known for delivering slow, yet confusing and over-the-top deliveries, Mlaba has scalped 12 wickets in just six matches at an economy of just 5.66.

11. Megan Schutt (Australia)

Megan Schutt symbolises consistency for the Women's Australia pace department. She has been an integral part of Australia's seam assault with her huge inswingers and leg cutter as her signature deliveries, which can be vividly seen in her tournament stint. She has taken eight wickets in five outings at a praiseworthy economy of just four.

England Women clinched a crucial seven-wicket win against South Africa Women in the final-over thriller of the Group B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

After South Africa Women chose to bat first, they scored 124/6 in 20 overs. England Women successfully chased the target in 19.2 overs after losing three wickets.

Stable opening partnership

South Africa had a stable opening partnership of 31 runs between the captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits. At the end of the powerplay, South Africa Women scored 37/1 as Brits lost her wicket after scoring 13 runs.

Bosch struggled; no boundary between 7th and 13th overs

While Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch had a 40-run partnership for the second wicket, Bosch struggled to move the scoreboard quickly. After the powerplay to 13th over, South Africa failed to hit one boundary.

After Bosch was out for 18 off 26 balls, Sophie Ecclestone bowled the opponent skipper Wolvaardt for 42 off 39 balls.

Star bowler Ecclestone, Kapp and Dercksen fought hard at the end

Marizanne Kapp (26 off 17 balls) and Annerie Dercksen (20 not out off 11 balls) played some useful innings to take the total to the challenging position. In the last four overs, South Africa Women scored 35 runs.

Among the English bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone was exceptional, as she finished with the bowling figures of 4-0-15-2.

Slow start from England Women

In reply, England had a slow start while the opener Maia Bouchier was dismissed for eight runs in 20 balls. At the end of the powerplay, England Women scored 28/1.

Wyatt-Hodge and Sciver-Brunt successfully controlled the chasing

Although Alice Capsey had good intent, she was dismissed for 19 runs. But the other opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Nat Sciver-Brunt controlled the game very well. They had a 64-run partnership for the third wicket.

While Wyatt-Hodge scored run-a-ball 43 runs, Sciver-Brunt batted till securing England Women’s important win. In the last over, England Women required four runs. After Ayabonga Khaka delivered a dot ball on the first ball, Sciver-Brunt ended the game on the second delivery with a boundary. Sciver-Brunt remained not out for 48 off 36 balls.

In an electrifying opener for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa Women made a resounding statement by defeating West Indies Women by 10 wickets. The defending runners-up showcased their dominance with a record-breaking chase, successfully pursuing a target of 119 runs without losing a single wicket.

Wolvaardt and Brits lead the charge

South African captain Laura Wolvaardt and opener Tazmin Brits provided a powerful start to the innings, laying a strong foundation during the powerplay. Wolvaardt was in excellent form, scoring 59 runs off 55 balls, including seven boundaries. Her partner, Brits, matched her performance with an impressive 57 runs off 52 balls. Their unbeaten partnership ensured a comfortable chase, setting the record for the highest target chased without losing a wicket in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Mlaba’s spell dominates West Indies batters

Left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout performer with the ball, taking four crucial wickets that crippled the West Indies batting lineup. Mlaba dismissed key players early in the innings, including captain Hayley Mathews and the returning Deandra Dottin, finishing with figures of 4 for 20. Her exceptional bowling helped restrict West Indies to a modest total, allowing South Africa to capitalize on their solid start.

Stafanie Taylor’s resilience amidst struggles

Despite the loss, West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor demonstrated resilience and skill as she anchored her team’s innings. Taylor scored a commendable 44 not out off 41 balls, featuring two fours and a six. Her partnership with Zaida James (15 not out) helped the West Indies reach a total of 118 runs, but it ultimately proved insufficient against South Africa's formidable batting display.

South Africa Women’s emphatic victory not only marked a successful start to their World Cup campaign but also set new records, showcasing their intent to reclaim the title.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 runners-up South Africa Women started their campaign in the 2024 edition strongly with a record-breaking 10-wicket win against West Indies Women.

After choosing to bowl first, South Africa Women restricted West Indies Women to 118/6 in 20 overs. In reply, South Africa Women chased the target successfully without losing a wicket in 17.5 overs.

Caribbean openers fell early

West Indies Women’s opening batters, captain Hayley Mathews (10) and Qiana Joseph (4) lost wickets in the powerplay as Marizanne Kapp and Nonkululeko Mlaba took the wickets. At the end of the powerplay, West Indies Women scored 31/2.

Kapp dismissed dangerous Deandra Dottin

While Deandra Dottin started dangerously on her international return, Kapp took her wicket in the early stage. Dotting scored 13 off eight balls with three fours.

Nonkululeko Mlaba’s spell

South African left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba took four wickets. Apart from dismissing the opener Joseph in the powerplay, Mlaba dominated in her second spell, starting from the 12th over. During her second over, Mlaba took two wickets in successive deliveries by dismissing Shemaine Campbelle (17) and Chinelle Henry (0). In her last over, Mlaba picked up the wicket of Aaliyah Alleyne (7), which put West Indies Women in deep trouble at 83/6.

Stafanie Taylor guided to the respected total

The no.3 position batter Stafanie Taylor played an important role for the Caribbean team in managing the first batting total of 118/6. With the help of two fours and one six, Taylor scored 44 not out off 41 balls. Also, she got support from Zaida James (15 not out) as both had a 35-run partnership for the unbroken seventh wicket.

Captain provided a powerful start

Captain Laura Wolvaardt provided a powerful start for South Africa Women in the chasing. The openers, Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits took the scoreboard to 43 runs at the end of the powerplay. Out of seven fours in the powerplay, Wolvaardt hit six boundaries to score 29 off 20 balls.

Openers secured a record-breaking victory

South African openers never lose their control of the successful chasing. West Indies Women had hard luck as none of their bowlers managed to create any chance.

Both the South African openers completed their half-centuries. Captain Wolvaardt scored 59 not out off 55 balls with seven fours and Britz scored 57 not out off 52 balls with six fours.

 • It was the highest target chase without losing a wicket in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history. South Africa Women also held the previous record by successfully chasing 114 runs target (117/0 in 17.5 overs) against Bangladesh Women at Cape Town in 2023.
 • South Africa Women also became the first to record a ten-wicket victory twice in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

While most sides have seen the inclusion of young and emerging players in their squad, West Indies has taken the other path and followed the experienced campaigner's route, which will be interesting to check out. Hayley Matthews will captain the West Indies' 15-member team for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024, which includes Deandra Dottin, who recently reversed her international retirement. Dottin, along with Stafanie Taylor and vice-captain Shemaine Campbelle, is one of the team's most experienced players, having played over 100 T20Is for the West Indies.

Comprising Nahida Akter, Shorna Akter, Rabeya, Sultana Khatun and Fahima Khatun, there are several left and right-hand as well as off-break and leg-break options in their 15-player squad which will do the trick of scalping some pivotal wickets against the intense sides.

Pakistan Women's team would be under the helm of the 22-year-old Fatima Sana, who has taken up the responsibility from the experienced former captain Nida Dar. With a decent squad and a new captain, Pakistan will be up against the robust contenders of India, Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand.

Top 3 players to check out from South Africa in the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup:

Laura Wolvaardt

Laura Wolvaardt would be one of the pivotal players who would bring the experience element to the Proteas squad. Also, with her captaining the team in a major tournament, it will be interesting to see how she would perform in the tournament.

As a top-order batter, Laura will be seen bolstering the team's batting unit, and it will be interesting to see her as one of the top run-getters for the South African side in the tournament. And to give a limelight on her T20I stint, she has made 1765 runs in 35 matches, at a commendable average of over 35.

Marizanne Kapp

Marizanne Kapp has been among the best South African players to be remembered in the history of women's Proteas side. Predominant for her hostile pace, aggressive calibre and reliable yet impactful batting, Kapp has been a vital contributor with her all-rounding skills and demeanour.

Her contributions to the Delhi Capitals in the WPL act as the cherry on top, where she unleashed her best bowling attack for her side. And no doubt, she would be one of the players to check out from the Proteas squad. In her T20I stint, she has made 1532 runs and scalped 83 wickets in 107 matches.

Seshnie Naidu

Seshnie Naidu, an emerging leg-spinner, has got her tournament call-up following outstanding performances for the U19 team. Seshnie's cricketing career began at nine when she joined her primary school's mini-cricket squad. Despite her youth, Seshnie responds maturely to the challenges of worldwide competition.

Her approach leading up to the World Cup is to keep improving her talents, trust her ability, and, most importantly, enjoy the event. As the title says, Naidu has the potential to become a rising star in female cricket, thanks to the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup. She only took one wicket in three matches but may make a difference in future games by gaining experience.

<![CDATA[INDW vs SAW: Player Analysis: Tazmin Brits Capitalizes on India's Sloppy Performance]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/indw-vs-saw-player-analysis-tazmin-brits-capitalizes-on-indias-sloppy-performance/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/indw-vs-saw-player-analysis-tazmin-brits-capitalizes-on-indias-sloppy-performance/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 11:52:20 GMT

As a former javelin thrower who has secured Gold for South Africa at numerous sporting events, Tazmin Brits approached the Indian bowlers with fierce determination at the start of her innings. Despite her aggressive intent, her initial efforts did not yield success, and she narrowly escaped an early dismissal when Jemimah Rodrigues missed a crucial run-out opportunity. The early stages of her innings were fraught with challenges, as she faced two overs of pace with the ball moving significantly.

However, Tazmin Brits managed to survive this tricky period, gradually finding her rhythm and emerging stronger. Her resilience in those early overs allowed her to build a solid foundation, which she later capitalized on, showcasing her ability to adapt and thrive under pressure. This transformation marked a pivotal moment in her innings, setting the stage for her eventual match-winning performance.

In-depth Analysis of Tazmin Brits Innings Build-up

Lucky for Brits, her skipper Laura Wolvaardt kept the scoreboard ticking with her blistering strokeplay, just as she has done throughout the tour, whether in One-Day Internationals (ODI) or the one-off Test. Wolvaardt’s 22-ball 33 seemed effortless, as if she were batting on a completely different wicket. Observing her captain’s composed and effective approach, Brits perhaps realized that it would be more beneficial to allow the ball to come to her rather than forcing her shots. This adjustment in strategy became evident once Harmanpreet Kaur introduced spin into the attack.

Brits initially struggled against Pooja Vastrakar, finding it difficult to make solid contact with the ball. However, it was against Vastrakar that she finally found her rhythm, smashing a delivery down the ground to reach her 10th T20I fifty. She began to access the areas behind the wickets skillfully, often shimmying back and using her bat swing to great effect. This newfound confidence allowed her to showcase her prowess on the off side, executing precise cuts behind square.

When the time came to unleash her full potential, Brits did not hesitate to target the opposite end as well. She cleared the fence with ease on multiple occasions, demonstrating her ability to strike powerfully and accurately. This combination of strategic play and aggressive hitting underscored her adaptability and skill, making her a formidable force against the Indian bowlers and contributing significantly to her team’s success.

Tazmin Brits initially struggled to find her rhythm, managing only 1 run off her first 10 balls. However, she quickly turned things around, scoring 15 runs in her next 10 balls, followed by 20 runs in the subsequent 10. From there, she accelerated impressively, adding 45 runs off her final 26 balls. In total, Brits delivered a match-winning performance with her highest T20I score of 81 off 56 balls, showcasing her ability to adapt and capitalize on the opportunity against a sloppy Indian side.

Marizanne Kapp, who came in at number three, initially timed the ball with precision, while Tazmin Brits had to work harder for her runs. Kapp’s fluent stroke play helped build a solid partnership, with the duo putting on nearly 100 runs for the second wicket. However, once Kapp was dismissed, Brits realized the importance of her role as the set batter and knew she had to anchor the innings. Her wicket at that crucial juncture could have left her team short by 10-15 runs or more.

Brits’ task was made easier when Richa Ghosh dropped a straightforward catch, allowing her to continue her innings. India’s subpar fielding and missed opportunities, particularly letting a set batter like Brits off the hook multiple times, proved costly. Had they been sharper in the field, the visitors might have struggled to surpass 150 runs. Instead, these lapses enabled Brits to capitalize and ensure her team reached a competitive total.

India’s strong performances from Jemimah Rodrigues and Smriti Mandhana weren’t enough as they failed to chase down 190 against South Africa in Chennai on Friday. Tazmin Brits led the visitors with an impressive 81 off 56 balls, securing a 12 run victory for South Africa in the 1st T20I.

India’s winning streak in T20Is ended as they lost the first game of a three match series to South Africa by 12 runs in a high scoring contest. Coming off a 5-0 series win against Bangladesh, India was confident but their bowling fell short in this series opener.

Despite winning the ODI series 3-0 and the lone Test match against South Africa, India struggled in the T20I. Contributions from Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah Rodrigues couldn’t close the gap to the 190 run target. The loss also marked India’s first defeat in the multi format series against the visiting South African team.

South Africa takes the lead in threematch series

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged the team’s shortcomings “We dropped too many chances in the field and played too many dot balls in the middle overs. They bowled well, but we needed to keep the momentum going.” Her statement highlighted the critical moments where India faltered despite a strong start.

India opted to bowl first, hoping to capitalize on early conditions. However, Renuka Singh and the other new ball bowlers couldn’t secure early wickets. Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits formed a strong opening partnership, putting pressure on the Indian bowlers right from the start.

South Africa’s strong start and key partnerships

Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav managed to strike in the 8th over, removing Wolvaardt. However, Brits and Marizanne Kapp added 96 runs for the second wicket, with Kapp scoring 57 off 33 balls while Brits dominated with her 81. This partnership was crucial in setting up a formidable total for South Africa.

Brits’ late innings surge helped South Africa post a challenging total. Only Pooja Vastrakar and Radha Yadav took two wickets each for India, while the other bowlers struggled. Spinners Deepti Sharma and Asha Sobhana leaked 84 runs between them in 8 overs without taking a wicket.

Mandhana and Rodrigues lead India’s chase

In response, India had a strong start with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana adding 56 runs quickly. However, Shafali fell for 18, and Dayalan Hemalatha couldn’t maintain the scoring rate, managing just 14 off 17 balls. Mandhana’s dismissal for 46 in the 10th over shifted momentum away from India.

Despite Jemimah Rodrigues unbeaten 53 and captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 35, India couldn’t reach the target. The high-scoring thriller ended with South Africa taking a 1-0 lead in the series, showcasing their resilience and tactical superiority in crucial moments.

India’s women’s cricket team showcased their dominance in a clinical 10-wicket victory over South Africa at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This match not only highlighted India’s prowess but also solidified their unbeaten record against South Africa in Test cricket, making it 3-0.

Day 1: Strong start for India

India’s innings began on a strong note with solid partnerships that set the foundation for a formidable total. Smriti Mandhana was a standout performer, scoring a brilliant 149 runs. Her partnership with Shafali Verma was particularly noteworthy, as they built a solid opening stand that put India in a commanding position early on.

Day 2: Consolidation and Dominance

On the second day, India continued to build on their strong start, with contributions from the middle order solidifying their position. Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma played crucial roles, ensuring that India posted a formidable total. By the end of the day, India had taken a significant lead, putting immense pressure on South Africa.

South Africa’s struggle in the first innings

South Africa’s first innings was marked by early wickets and consistent pressure from India’s bowlers. Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Sneh Rana were particularly effective, picking up crucial wickets and ensuring that South Africa never got into a rhythm. Despite a few resistance efforts, South Africa was bundled out for a modest total.

With a lead of 337 runs, India had a psychological edge over South Africa. This commanding lead not only put India in a strong position but also allowed their bowlers to attack without fear of conceding too many runs. Key performances from the Indian batters ensured that the team maintained their dominance.

South Africa’s resilient fightback

Despite the daunting task ahead, South Africa showed resilience in their second innings. The experienced duo of Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus put on a 190-run partnership for the second wicket, showcasing their grit and determination. This partnership was the highlight of South Africa’s innings and gave them a glimmer of hope.

Laura Wolvaardt’s heroics

Laura Wolvaardt’s century was a standout performance in the match. Scoring 122 runs off 314 balls, Wolvaardt became only the third batter in women’s cricket to score hundreds in all three formats. Her innings was a masterclass in patience and technique, earning her accolades and comparisons with cricketing greats.

Sune Luus’ contribution

Sune Luus played a crucial role alongside Wolvaardt, scoring a vital 109 runs. Her innings was marked by strategic shot selection and resilience. Luus’ performance was instrumental in helping South Africa avoid the follow-on and put up a fight in their second innings.

Marizanne Kapp and Nadine de Klerk’s efforts

Marizanne Kapp and Nadine de Klerk contributed significantly to South Africa’s total, with scores of 31 and 61 respectively. Their efforts were crucial in ensuring that South Africa wiped off the deficit and set a target for India. Kapp’s aggressive approach and de Klerk’s resilience were key highlights of their innings.

Despite suffering from lower limb cramps, Sinalo Jafta’s determination saw her return to bat and contribute to South Africa’s total. Her effort epitomized the fighting spirit of the South African team, even in the face of adversity.

India’s bowling prowess

India’s bowlers were exceptional throughout the match. Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad were the standout performers, picking up crucial wickets at key moments. Rana’s 10-wicket haul in the match was particularly noteworthy, making her only the second Indian bowler after Jhulan Goswami to achieve this feat in a Women’s Test.

Sneh Rana became just the second Indian to register a ten-wicket match haul in Women’s Tests. The off-spinner picked eight wickets in the first innings helping bowl out the visitor for 266 before picking up two more in the second innings to achieve the feat.

Jhulan Goswami is the only other bowler to have picked up ten in a match for India Women, doing so against England at Taunton in 2006.

The final run chase

India’s run chase was a straightforward affair. Despite Smriti Mandhana not coming out to bat, Shafali Verma and Shubha Satheesh ensured that India crossed the finish line with ease. Shafali, continuing her fine form from the first innings, remained unbeaten on 24 runs, guiding India to a 10-wicket victory.

Shafali Verma’s impact

Shafali Verma’s consistent performance was a highlight of the match. Her scores of 205 in the first innings and 24 not out in the second were crucial in India’s victory.

With the Test series concluded, India will now focus on the upcoming 3-match T20I series against South Africa, starting on July 5 at Chepauk.
