ST vs MS Match Preview

Melbourne Stars secured their debut in the BBL finals until the 2019-20 season by overcoming a 0-5 start with five consecutive victories. They will now face third-placed Sydney Thunder for the knockout final at Engie Stadium on Wednesday night. Surprisingly, the Stars' last loss came against the Thunder on December 28. Since then, the Stars have been unstoppable, led by dynamic captain Glen Maxwell. In contrast, the Thunder have had some inconsistent performances. Given their present momentum, the Stars are expected to be favorites in this knockout clash.

ST vs PS Match Preview

Sydney Thunder return to their home venue in search of a win after two consecutive losses. They have won each of their two matches at Sydney Showground Stadium this season. Skipper David Warner is in excellent form and has consistently scored at the top. He requires support from his prospective partner. In his most recent appearance, Sam Konstas started alongside him but failed to make an impression. The Scorchers' performance has been inconsistent in both departments. Batting performances have fluctuated from one extreme to the other, while bowlers continue to be ineffective.

Sydney Thunder will have a slight advantage over the visitors and will be the favorite in our match prediction. Considering the team combination, Sydney Thunder is expected to win this match.

Top Picks – Sydney Thunder

 • David Warner – The pressure would be on David Warner if the Sydney Thunders look to improve their performance this season. Despite not playing much cricket, Warner remains one of the most lethal T20 batters.
 • Daniel Sams – Daniel Sams was the lone bright spot in the Sydney Thunders' disappointing season last year. With 12 wickets, he was his team's leading wicket-taker.

ST vs HH Probable Winners:

Last season, the Sydney Thunder struggled to get started, winning only one game and completing eighth on the table. They encountered the Hobart Hurricanes multiple times and were outplayed both times, with Adelaide completing the double over them. In fact, the Thunder have not defeated the Hurricanes over their last five meetings. In contrast, the Hobart Hurricanes enjoyed a slow start this year but eventually found their groove, winning four straight games to secure a playoff spot. Considering the team combination, Hobart Hurricanes is expected to win this match.

<![CDATA[Former Australia all-rounder comes out of retirement to help injury-hit Sydney Thunder]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/former-australia-all-rounder-comes-out-of-retirement-to-help-injury-hit-sydney-thunder/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/former-australia-all-rounder-comes-out-of-retirement-to-help-injury-hit-sydney-thunder/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 09:55:08 GMT

In an unusual turn of events, Sydney Thunder assistant coach and former Aussie all-rounder Dan Christian has decided to step in as a replacement player to help an injury-hit Sydney Thunder franchise remain afloat in the BBL-14 season. By doing so, he will make his way to an elite group of players who have participated in the BBL earlier aged 40 and beyond including the likes of Brad Hogg, Brad Hodge, Peter Siddle, Fawad Ahmed, and the late Shane Warne.

The call was made following an infamous on-field collision between Dan Sams and Cam Bancroft, the former being ruled out for the rest of the tournament. Sams, on the other hand, continues to be under the supervision of the medical staff amidst stringent concussion protocols and is expected to be back at a later stage in the tournament. With effectively two men short, Dan Christian's inclusion was perhaps the only option open for the team management to fill the massive void.

More about the stalwart all-rounder

Prior to taking up the coaching responsibilities for the Thunder, Dan was last seen in action as a professional cricket player for the Sydney Sixers a couple of seasons ago. The 41-year-old allrounder has not been involved in any form of professional cricket since the semi-final loss to the Brisbane Heat in the BBL-12 season but has been maintaining his fitness actively with UNSW and has regularly taken part in the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Dan confirms that he will remain available for Sydney Thunder for the remainder of the tournament and wishes Sams and Bancroft a swift recovery after their accident.

"The incident with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was extremely unfortunate, but I'm really grateful for the opportunity it's presented. I wish them all the best with their recoveries and hope they'll be back on the park soon."

Dan Christian's immediate impact in the ongoing BBL clash with Brisbane Heat

The Australian all-rounder has made a resounding re-entry to professional cricket during the 25th fixture of the BBL-14 edition between Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat. He played a vital role with the bat and helped Thunder reach a respectable score of 173. The 41-year-old launched a brutal counter-offensive towards the backend of the innings and slammed an unbeaten 23* off 15 which featured two sixes.

His blistering cameo serves as a powerful reminder that the cricketer-turned-coach still has some cricket left in him. However, Dan's potential with the ball did not come to light as, at the time of writing, the innings interval was currently underway.

David Warner's Hilarious LBW Mix-Up in BBL 2024-25

At a Major Bash League (BBL) game on January 3, 2025, something amusing happened that cricket fans enjoyed. The match was between the Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers. Australian cricketer David Warner ended up being the main part of a strange happening. Warner thought he was out because the ball hit his leg instead of the bat and started walking off the field but then they said he wasn't out and called him back.

What Happened?

In the middle of trying to score 178 runs which the Scorchers had set for them, the Thunder team witnessed a silly event. Warner thought the ball from spinner Matthew Spoors, which hit him on the pads in the 10th over, was going to knock the stumps over. Without even looking to see what the umpire thought, he started heading back to the pavilion, thinking he was out.

Everyone was surprised, especially Warner, when for a review of the umpire's call. The field umpire initially believed Warner wasn't out but when they checked with ball-tracking technology, it turned out the ball only hit the stumps lightly. At the start, it seemed unsure if the review would change anything.

Realizing his premature walk-off, Warner returned to the crease, bringing laughter and smiles to players and spectators alike.

Fans React

All over the internet, people and cricket buffs were posting videos of Warner's mix-up, and it spread inordinately speedily. This proved that cricket can be a little relaxed at times, showing even stars like Warner make mistakes now and then. The official BBL Facebook page even threw in a joke, saying it was obvious Warner wasn't focused.
