Rohit Sharma said he needed "to be smart" and "open up all sides of the field" to counter the strong breeze at the Daren Sammy Stadium in a Super Eight game of the T20 World Cup 2024 against an Australia bowling attack that tried to use that same breeze to make life difficult for him. He was smart enough on the day, hitting a 41-ball 92 with seven fours and eight sixes to lead India to a 24-run win and a spot in the semi-finals as the Group 1 toppers.

T20 World Cup Super Eight, Gros Islet

Rohit's ultra-aggressive approach brought him great success during the 2023 ODI World Cup, but he wasn't able to replicate it at the T20 World Cup. Then came the match against Australia. In a high-stakes contest, he smashed 92 off 41 to seal India's semi-final spot. As long as he was at the crease, it was a one-man show. Of India's first 52 runs, 50 came from Rohit's bat alone. He hit Mitchell Starc for four sixes and a four in one over before depositing a Pat Cummins slower ball on the roof of the stadium. In all, he hit seven fours and eight sixes and paved the way for a 200-plus total.

Rohit Performance against Australia :

In Mitchell Starc's second over, Rohit took him for 29 runs in seven balls - 6, 6, 4, 6, 0, wd, 6 - and there needed to be seven balls because, by the end, Starc wasn't too keen on bowling straight.

India could only score five boundaries in their last six overs. Rohit probably knew something like that would happen as the ball got older and the field spread out, so he took it upon himself to go early and go hard. This innings wasn't just about power-hitting. It was about clear thinking.

Hardik Pandya's Thoughts on the 2022 T20 World Cup Performance in 2025

Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya was interviewed recently in the press conference in the year 2025. He talked about his recent match played with Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022. During the event, Pandya revisited one of his most famous statements from that match: ""I don't have the skills of Jasprit Bumrah, but I've the skills of Hardik Pandya". His words from that game still resonate, highlighting his confidence and belief in his own abilities.

Hardik's Confidence
During his interaction, Pandya explained the reason behind the statement he made three years ago. According to him, each player has specific strengths, and his strength as an all-rounder adds value to the team in his own way.
His stand on not comparing himself with others and instead supporting the strengths remains unchanged.

In the second T20I between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on December 30, 2024, Sri Lanka had a strong chance to level the series and create history. Chasing 187, they were 69 runs away from victory with seven wickets in hand after 14 overs, a scenario that was quite promising. Kusal Perera’s brilliant batting gave Sri Lanka hope as they aimed to pull off a thrilling win, which would have tied the series at 1-1. At that stage, the Sri Lankan team seemed confident of chasing down the target.

Kusal Perera's exceptional knock of 48 from 35 balls gave the team a solid chance to pull off an historic victory. He tackled New Zealand’s bowlers with ease, delivering boundaries and rotating the strike effectively. With him at the crease, Sri Lanka seemed to be building a solid platform to chase down New Zealand's total. His resilience was evident as he played through some challenging moments and looked set to guide his team to victory.

The Turning Point: Perera’s Dismissal

However, things took a sharp turn when Perera was dismissed. His departure marked the start of Sri Lanka’s collapse, and momentum quickly shifted in favor of New Zealand. Jacob Duffy, a standout performer for the BlackCaps, claimed 4/15, continuing his excellent form. Sri Lanka, once in control, lost wickets rapidly, and the chase unraveled. New Zealand’s bowlers seized on Sri Lanka’s vulnerabilities, maintaining pressure with every over, ultimately guiding their team to victory as the match slipped away from Sri Lanka.

After Perera’s wicket, the Sri Lankan middle and lower order struggled to build partnerships, and the required run rate started to climb. Despite a valiant effort from other batsmen, the task proved too difficult. New Zealand's bowlers bowled with precision, and the fielding was sharp, making it increasingly hard for Sri Lanka to get back on track. In the end, Sri Lanka’s hopes were dashed, and they lost the match, leaving New Zealand to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Sri Lanka’s Challenge Ahead

This defeat leaves Sri Lanka with a tough task in the final match of the series.they will need to put in a complete performance. While Kusal Perera’s innings was the bright spot for Sri Lanka, the collapse afterward highlights the fragile nature of their batting lineup. The team will need to regroup and find a way to sustain pressure throughout the entire innings in the upcoming match.

New Zealand’s Upper Hand in the Series

For New Zealand, this victory strengthens their position in the series and gives them the upper hand. Their bowling attack, especially after Perera's dismissal, showed their depth and ability to recover under pressure. The Kiwis will look to maintain their momentum in the final match to secure a clean sweep series win, while Sri Lanka will be hoping to bounce back with a more complete performance.

In a shocking development, the South African Police Service which goes by the name of Hawks made headlines by arresting three former South African cricketers, Ethy Mbhalati, Thami Tsolekile, and Lonwabo Tsotsobe for their alleged role in match-fixing during the 2015/2016 domestic T20 Ram Slam Challenge.

These arrests were made after a whistleblower came forward in October 2016 to reveal the details of the heinous act of the trio. Following that development, a detailed investigation was launched by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit in a bid to assess the depth and gravity of the crime.

Details of their match-fixing charges

In a statement released on Friday, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) confirmed the arrests. Tsolekile and Tsotsobe were detained on November 28 and 29, respectively, while Mbhalati was apprehended on November 18.

Mbhalati made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court with his case now being deferred to 20 February 2025. While for Tsolekile and Tsotsobe, the duo has been charged with five counts of corruption under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act. Their respective cases have also been deferred to 26 February 2025.

Cricket South Africa’s crackdown on match-fixing scandals

The arrest of Mbhalati, Tsolekile, and Tsotsobe is not the first major scandal to be unmasked by Cricket South Africa (CSA). Prior to this corruption scandal, former Proteas cricketer Gulam Bodi was also identified and punished by the national cricketing body with a five-year jail term whereas Jean Symes and Pumi Matshikwe were given suspended sentences after pleading guilty in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Lieutenant General and head of the DPCI Godfrey Lebey praised the efforts of the investigation team for identifying the culprits and getting to the bottom of this match-fixing plot. “Corruption undermines the integrity of sport, and the Hawks are determined to safeguard the values of fairness and professionalism in all areas of society. We thank Cricket South Africa for their cooperation and commitment to addressing this scourge.”

This development solidifies Cricket South Africa's stance towards combating corruption in sports and highlights just how determined the cricketing body is to maintain the integrity of the game.

<![CDATA[Ni Made Putri Suwandewi gets a surprise call-up from Perth Scorchers]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ni-made-putri-suwandewi-gets-a-surprise-callup-from-perth-scorchers/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ni-made-putri-suwandewi-gets-a-surprise-callup-from-perth-scorchers/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 13:12:18 GMT

In their quest to explore exotic talent, the Perth Scorchers management stumbled upon a rare cricketing commodity during their visit to Bali earlier this year. Perth Scorchers women's coach Becky Grundy and high performance boss Kade Harvey were mighty impressed by what Ni Made Putri Suwandewi had to offer. Suwandewi, aged 29 is a rookie pacer who made her international debut for Indonesia in 2019. Gifted with a menacing inswinger and deceptive slower delivery, Suwandewi maintains a jaw-dropping economy rate of 2.97 RPO which is by far the best from anyone in the history of women's T20I cricket.

With veteran quick Piepa Cleary forced to wait on the sidelines due to a knee injury, the door was left ajar for the young Indonesian quick to feature in one of Australia's biggest cricketing carnivals. She has been signed in as an Associate rookie for the Scorchers ahead of the upcoming WBBL season. As per the current WBBL guidelines, franchises are allowed to enlist players from the Associate nations and then place them outside the 15-player squad.

More about the Indonesian fast-bowling sensation

Suwandewi has been a standout player for Indonesia and has starred in numerous international fixtures for her country in recent times. Ever since making her T20I debut, Suwandewi has snapped an unbelievable 49 wickets in 40 T20I wickets at a stunning average of 8.18. Moreover, her career-best economy rate also makes her a tough contender with the ball as well.

The rookie fast-bowling sensation straight away left a lasting impression upon her arrival in Perth on Saturday where she quickly garnered the attention of some of the key members of the coaching personnel during a routine training exercise. Suwandewi also confessed that she had been observing the WBBL closely and expressed her desire to play her part in it someday. Despite being short in stature, Suwandewi is armed with all the necessary traits a premium fast bowler should possess making her a force to reckon with.

What does the Perth Scorchers team management think of Suwandewi?

During a conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Harvey, the high performance coach for the Scorchers showered heaps of praises on Suwandewi. Harvey believes that the 26-year-old is truly capable of performing on the big stage and expects her to play a decisive role for their side in the forthcoming WBBL edition. Her natural ability to extract sharp inswing movement coupled with a highly deceptive slower ball were some of the major traits that stood out for Harvey. While observing her closely during the training session, Harvey also learned that Suwandewi has great control over her length and can fire in the yorkers at will.

Both Grundy and Harvey expressed their gratitude for acquiring the services of this young Associate pacer and truly recognized her importance to the side and what she brings to the table. The duo has acknowledged that the availability of international players through the course of the tournament will certainly be an ongoing challenge which is where Suwandewi's presence could prove quite handy. Despite hailing from an underprivileged cricket background in Indonesia, the depth of Ni Made Putri Suwandewi's skill makes her a rarity in modern-day cricket.

Scorchers will open their account against Melbourne Starson on October 27 at the WACA where she is expected to work alongside the T20 WC-winning captain Sophie Devine who will take charge of the Perth-based outfit this season.
