The third match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 took place between Namibia and Oman at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados. The Namibia vs Oman game ended in a tie and the first super-over decided the winner – Namibia. Jan Frylinck, David Wiese and Erasmus helped the team win the nail-biting match.

Namibia won the toss and opted to bowl first. Batting first, Oman lost their opener Kashyap Prajapati on a golden duck, courtesy of Ruben Trumpelmann. It was a full-length delivery and that trapped him in front of the middle stump as well. The next ball showed the dismissal of Aqib Ilyas who was hit in the boots by an inswinger as well. And, Namibia had the best possible start.

Ruben Trumpelmann claimed a four-fer

However, Naseem Khushi too got out for a mere 6. But then, Zeeshan Maqsood (22 off 20) and Khalid Kail (34 off 39) started to steady the ship. But that didn’t last long as Bernard Scholtz removed Zeeshan soon after the powerplay. Later, Ayaan Khan scored 15. But the lower middle-order couldn’t do much in front of a strong bowling attack.

Ruben Trumpelmann did exceptionally well with the ball and he claimed a four-fer and finished with 4 for 21. On the other hand, David Wiese also claimed 3 wickets for 28 runs as well. Gerhard Erasmus too picked up 2 scalps and their collective efforts restricted the opponents to a below-par score of 109 in 19.4 overs. Notably, Trumpelmann becomes the FIRST player to take a wicket on the first ball of a World Cup innings twice (ODIs+T20Is) – vs Scotland in 2021 and vs Oman in 2024 as well.

While chasing, Namibia had a poor start as their opener Michael van Lingen got out for a 2-ball duck. However, Nikolaas Davin (24 off 31) and Jan Frylinck (45 off 48) joined hands to steady the ship. They added 42 runs for the second wicket whereas Gerhard Erasmus scored 13 off a6 as well.

David Wiese’s all-round brilliance helped Namibia win the Super Over

However, the game took a turn towards the end of the innings where Mehran Khan struck in the 18th over and removed Smit for 8, conceding only 4 runs. David Wiese hit a six in the penultimate over and the equation came down to 5 needed in the final over.

However, Mehran Khan came to bowl the final over and he started with a wicket. He bowled the in-form Jan Frylinck and the second delivery went for a dot as well. He then trapped Zane Green in front of the stumps as well. However, David Wiese and Malan Kruger took the match to the Super Over.

Meanwhile, David Wiese and Erasmus started the Super Over whereas Bilal Khan bowled the over. Wiese scored 10 runs in the first two balls whereas Erasmus finished with two boundaries and they finished with 21 runs in the over. While chasing, David Wiese dismissed Naseem Khushi for 2 and a tight over saw them manage only 10 runs and Namibia registered a convincing win.

However, this is not the first time that Oman played a Super Over and faced the same fate. In the T20 World Cup qualifiers vs Nepal, they played against Nepal and co-incidentally, they scored 21/0 and the opponents scored 10/1 as well.

After the win, David Wiese, Player of the Match said: “Lost a couple of years tonight, don’t know how many I have left in me now. Just been that kind of an emotionally draining game. (On his Super Over bowling) I had a feel for the wicket and knew what I had to execute in the Super Over.

The pitch was difficult, was a bit two-paced and different to what we expected. I think we adapted well and it was surely a pitch where you had to spend some time out there. I think if we were chasing 180, we would have had to attack without thinking too much about the pitch, so tough to say what would have been a par total on this wicket.”

<![CDATA[T20 World Cup 2024: SWOT analysis of Canada team]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/t20-world-cup-2024-swot-analysis-of-canada-team/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/t20-world-cup-2024-swot-analysis-of-canada-team/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:30:00 GMT

Cricket may not be the first sport that comes to mind when you think of Canada, but the country has a surprisingly rich history with the game. But over the past two to three years, the Canadian cricket team has played a relatively small number of T20 matches. In 2023, they participated in just 6 matches, and in 2024, they have played 4 games so far, losing all of them. This lack of match practice is a disadvantage, but it also offers a fresh start for the team to turn things around in the upcoming World Cup.

Canada’s Cricket Statistics

To date, the Canadian cricket team has played 89 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), winning 24 of them. In T20 Internationals, they have played 58 matches, with a higher success rate of 30 victories. Currently, Canada is ranked 17th in ICC ODIs and 22nd in T20Is. These statistics reflect the team’s potential, particularly in the T20 format, where they have shown greater competitiveness.

The primary challenge for Canada has been the limited number of matches played in recent years. This scarcity of competitive play hampers the team’s ability to build cohesion, develop strategies, and gain valuable experience. The lack of regular participation in ICC group-stage competitions further compounds these difficulties, affecting their overall performance and growth in international cricket.

SWOT Analysis of Canada’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad

Strengths

Canada’s strengths lie in their key batters and the promising young talent in the squad. Players like Navneet Dhaliwal provide a steadying influence, while the younger players bring energy and potential that could surprise their opponents.

Navneet Dhaliwal stands out as a key player with an impressive batting record. His ability to anchor the innings and score crucial runs will be vital for Canada’s campaign. The young talent in the team also adds a dynamic element with the potential to make significant contributions.

The inclusion of young, promising players is a major asset for Canada. These players bring fresh energy and enthusiasm, and their performances in the T20 World Cup could pave the way for a brighter future for Canadian cricket.

Weaknesses

Canada’s irregular participation in ICC group-stage competitions is a major drawback. This lack of consistent competition limits their ability to build a strong, cohesive team and gain the experience needed to perform well at the international level.

The team’s inconsistency in performance further hampers its progress. While it has shown potential in individual matches, it needs help maintaining this level of performance consistently.

Opportunities

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is a golden opportunity for Canada to showcase their talent and compete against some of the best teams in the world. A strong performance in the tournament could elevate the profile of cricket in Canada and attract more support and resources.

The GT20 Canada tournament plays a crucial role in the development of Canadian cricket. By attracting top international players and providing a platform for local talent, this tournament helps Canadian players gain valuable experience and exposure.

Threats

Canada’s historical inconsistency and lack of dominance in international cricket pose a threat to their performance. Their non-test status and limited resources further exacerbate these challenges, making it difficult for them to compete against more established teams.

Canada’s non-test status and limited resources are major hurdles. Without the benefits and infrastructure available to test-playing nations, Canada faces an uphill battle to develop their players and compete at the highest level.

Canada’s Campaign Schedule

Canada’s journey in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will see them facing formidable opponents. Their schedule includes key matches against top teams, providing them with opportunities to test their skills and potentially pull off some upsets.

Ireland’s selectors made a significant announcement on Tuesday as they unveiled a 15-man provisional squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. This squad, unchanged from their recent series against Afghanistan, reflects the team’s confidence and continuity as they gear up for the global tournament.

“We have an intensive block of T20 cricket coming up this month ahead of the T20 World Cup – we have seven games in 15 days as preparation for the tournament. We will not be treating those seven games as warm-ups, though, we’ll be aiming to win as many of those games as possible.”

<![CDATA["Bowlers should dominate the batters mentally…": Kuldeep Yadav on non-stop hitting]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bowlers-should-dominate-the-batters-mentally-kuldeep-yadav-on-non-stop-hitting/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bowlers-should-dominate-the-batters-mentally-kuldeep-yadav-on-non-stop-hitting/ Mon, 06 May 2024 19:18:45 GMT

IPL 2024 has witnessed a dynamic shift in the dynamics between bowlers and batters, with the resurgence of big-hitting and record team totals. Amidst this landscape, Kuldeep Yadav sheds light on the mental challenges bowlers face and the importance of maintaining courage and confidence.

Kuldeep Yadav’s Insights: Courage Amidst Challenges

Speaking at a recent press event in Delhi, Kuldeep emphasizes the need for bowlers to exhibit courage in the face of relentless attacks by batters. He underscores that bowlers have ample opportunities to take wickets, even in high-scoring encounters. Teams in IPL 2024 are adopting aggressive strategies, particularly in the powerplay overs, aiming to maximize run-scoring opportunities. Kuldeep observes a shift from cautious batting to aggressive intent, challenging bowlers to adapt and showcase resilience.

“Every team is now trying to attack in the powerplay and score as many runs as possible. It slows down a bit in the middle overs because of the open field, so the batters are playing more freely in the powerplay. Those days are gone when teams used to target 45-50 runs in the powerplay. But I think the bowlers must show more courage. If a batter goes for the attack, then a bowler also has more chances of taking wickets,” Kuldeep said at a press event in Delhi recently.

Jasprit Bumrah: Setting the Standard

Jasprit Bumrah is a prime example of bowler dominance in IPL 2024, combining wicket-taking prowess with impeccable economy rates. His ability to dictate terms to batters exemplifies the mental stronghold bowlers can establish on the field.

“I feel that the bowlers are trying more to read the batters’ mind instead of sticking to their strengths. They are trying to bowl where the batter looks a little weak. But I think a bowler should understand his strengths and back his strengths. You can see Jasprit Bumrah, who backs his strengths. The way he bowls, any batter is on the back foot. He dominates the batters mentally. All these things become very important.”

Kuldeep Yadav’s Performance and Perspective

While Kuldeep’s stats may not reflect Bumrah’s dominance, his performances highlight his resilience and adaptability. Despite challenges, Kuldeep remains a vital asset for his team, contributing with crucial wickets and valuable insights.

Kuldeep attributes his growing confidence to his evolving approach towards bowling. He emphasizes the importance of self-belief and understanding one’s strengths, echoing Bumrah’s approach to dominating batters mentally.

“If you are not confident then you will be in a defensive mindset,” he said. “On the other hand, if you are confident, then you are ready to bowl even in the powerplay. I am now ready for all the challenges and always look to take wickets. My self-confidence has increased, and I have a lot of faith in my skills. I see how the batter is batting and how I have to bowl to him. I think where should I bowl to him so that he has a little difficulty in hitting.

“Sometimes you can get hit even on good balls, like it happened to me during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. [Heinrich] Klaasen and Abhishek hit sixes on good balls. But I believed in my skills, and I also got wickets that day. Now I enjoy my bowling more and I have learned all this from experience.”

Kuldeep’s Contribution Beyond Bowling

Beyond his bowling prowess, Kuldeep’s dedication to improving his batting skills showcases his versatility as a cricketer. Influenced by Rohit Sharma’s guidance, Kuldeep’s commitment to batting adds depth to his role within the team.

“Rohit bhai does not talk to me much about bowling because I am doing what he wants from me with the ball,” Kuldeep said. “He was concerned about my batting. He told me to improve my batting. I worked on it during the Test series against England [at home earlier this year] and he was impressed by my hard work. He used to be with me in the nets and speak to me about the nuances of batting. This helped me a lot and now I am enjoying my batting as much as my bowling.”

As the T20 World Cup approaches, Kuldeep Yadav’s performance becomes crucial for Team India. With expectations riding high, Kuldeep aims to deliver impactful performances both with the ball and the bat, further solidifying his position in the squad.

In the realm of cricket, narratives often unfold in unexpected ways. Just over a month ago, doubts loomed over Rishabh Pant’s participation in the Indian Premier League. Fast forward to today, and he stands on the brink of potentially assuming a leadership role in the Indian cricket team, especially with the T20 World Cup looming large.

Rishabh Pant: A Resilient Player

Pant’s journey back to prominence is a testament to his resilience. After enduring a prolonged absence due to injury following a harrowing accident in December 2022, Pant has not only recovered but has also showcased his mettle on the field. His previous stint as the captain of the Indian team during the five-match T20I series against South Africa in June 2022 underscores his leadership potential.

Contenders for Leadership

However, Pant’s ascent to a leadership position is not without competition. Hardik Pandya emerges as another formidable contender. Despite Pandya’s prowess as an all-rounder and his previous designation as the vice-captain for the World Cup, his recent performance in the IPL has raised questions. Questionable decisions and public criticisms have marred his captaincy for the Mumbai Indians, potentially tilting the scales in Pant’s favour.

Selection Challenges

As the national selectors convene to finalize the squad for the T20 World Cup, several selection dilemmas loom large. The composition of the top and middle order remains a point of contention, with stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav anchoring the lineup. Including players like Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson or KL Rahul further complicates matters.

The battle between Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi in the spin department intensifies while Kuldeep Yadav holds fort as the specialist spinner. Yuzvendra Chahal’s stellar IPL performance may not guarantee him a spot in the squad.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh seem like certainties in the pace bowling department. However, the lack of standout performers in the IPL pacer pool may open doors for Sandeep Sharma, known for his effectiveness on slower pitches.

The cricketing world has been abuzz with speculations regarding Virat Kohli‘s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Kohli, a stalwart of Indian cricket, has been an indispensable part of the national team since his debut. Still, recent reports have cast doubt on his inclusion in the squad for the prestigious tournament.

Reports of Potential Exclusion

In a surprising turn of events, a report speculated that Kohli might be dropped from the T20 World Cup squad. This news sent shock-waves across the cricketing fraternity, as Kohli’s absence from the global event would be unprecedented, given his track record and stature in the game.

Confirmation of Kohli’s Inclusion

Amidst the swirling rumors, a statement from BCCI chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, provided a sigh of relief to Kohli’s fans. Agarkar hailed Kohli’s fitness and emphasized his crucial role in shaping the future of Indian cricket. His endorsement reinstated faith in Kohli’s participation in the T20 World Cup.

Ajit Agarkar’s Endorsement of Kohli’s Fitness

Speaking on the SportifywithPRG podcast, Ajit Agarkar lauded Kohli’s dedication to fitness throughout his illustrious career. He emphasized that Kohli’s commitment to maintaining peak physical condition has set a benchmark for aspiring cricketers in India. Agarkar’s words underscored the pivotal role of fitness in modern cricket and highlighted Kohli’s influence on the younger generation.

“Look at Virat. He is one of those guys who has set a benchmark. 10-15 years into his career, he has only gotten fitter. And you can see the results. If someone like him sets an example, puts forward certain things than you need, certain fitness levels you need, gradually it has progressed. BCCI has been instrumental as well with all the academies that have happened. You learn a lot quicker. Boys today at 15-16 are a lot fitter than what they were and they should be now with the amount of knowledge, awareness and facilities available,” Agarkar said on the SportifywithPRG podcast.

Kohli’s Performance in the 2024 IPL

Amidst the speculation, Kohli showcased his prowess in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) while leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With stellar performances and consistent run-scoring, Kohli demonstrated his form and ability to excel on the cricketing stage.

Despite his impressive run tally, Kohli’s strike rate came under scrutiny, particularly after a comparatively slow century against Rajasthan Royals. Critics questioned his approach, reigniting the age-old debate over strike rate versus consistency in T20 cricket.

Controversy and Criticism

The controversy surrounding Kohli’s participation escalated when former cricketers Ravi Shastri and Kevin Pietersen questioned his place in the T20 World Cup squad. However, Kohli responded in typical fashion, letting his performance on the field do the talking.
