India vs. Australia has been one of the most exciting rivalries in cricket history, delivering unforgettable matches since their first encounter in 1947-48. The contrasting playing conditions in the two countries add a layer of intrigue, making every series unique. Over the decades, many Indian batters have risen to the challenge, dominating Australian bowlers at home and away.

Here’s a look at the top five Indian batters who have scored the most runs against Australia in Test cricket.

5. Virat Kohli – 2042 Runs

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has an outstanding record against Australia across formats. In Test cricket, he ranks fifth among Indians with the most runs against the Aussies.

In 25 matches, Kohli has amassed 2042 runs at an average of 47.48, including eight centuries (the second-most by an Indian vs. Australia) and five half-centuries. His highest score of 186 reflects his dominance with the bat. Kohli's leadership was historic; under him, India secured their first-ever Test series victory in Australia in 2018-19.

4. Cheteshwar Pujara – 2074 Runs

Known for his grit and resilience, Cheteshwar Pujara has been a thorn in Australia’s side. Between 2010 and 2023, Pujara played 25 Tests against them, scoring 2074 runs at an average of 49.38.

Pujara was instrumental in India’s victories in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series, emerging as the highest scorer in 2016-17 and 2018-19, and the second-highest in 2020-21. His tally includes five centuries and 11 half-centuries, proving his consistency across challenging conditions.

3. Rahul Dravid – 2143 Runs

Rahul Dravid, often referred to as The Wall, was a dependable batter for India in tough situations. Against Australia, he played 32 Tests between 1996 and 2012, scoring 2143 runs at an average of 39.68.

Dravid's contributions included two centuries and 13 half-centuries. His memorable 233 at Adelaide in 2003, and his partnership with VVS Laxman at Eden Gardens in 2001, underline his significance in India’s Test cricket history.

2. VVS Laxman – 2434 Runs

VVS Laxman had a special connection with playing against Australia, producing some of his career-best performances. He scored 2434 runs in 29 Tests between 1998 and 2012 at an impressive average of 49.67.

His innings of 281 at Eden Gardens in 2001 remains one of the greatest Test knocks of all time, helping India achieve a famous comeback win. Laxman’s six centuries and 12 half-centuries against Australia further highlight his ability to perform under pressure.

1. Sachin Tendulkar – 3630 Runs

The Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 3630 runs against Australia, the most by any Indian and second-most overall in Test cricket. Tendulkar played 39 Tests against Australia from 1991 to 2013, averaging 55 with 11 centuries and 16 half-centuries.

His innings of 241 not out in Sydney in 2004 showcased his mastery over the Australian bowlers. Tendulkar’s consistency and ability to rise to the occasion made him the Aussies’ biggest challenge for over two decades.

The India-Australia rivalry in Test cricket is more than just a contest—it’s a battle of grit, skill, and legacy. These five batters have left an indelible mark on this storied competition, inspiring generations of cricketers and fans alike.

<![CDATA[Gill’s injury and Rohit’s absence leave India in a tight spot for Perth Test]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/gills-injury-and-rohits-absence-leave-india-in-a-tight-spot-for-perth-test/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/gills-injury-and-rohits-absence-leave-india-in-a-tight-spot-for-perth-test/ Sat, 16 Nov 2024 10:17:38 GMT

India’s preparations for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth suffered a significant blow as Shubman Gill sustained an injury to his left hand during a simulated match at the WACA. Gill, fielding in the slips on the second day, was forced off the field after the incident and did not return for the rest of the session.

While the severity of the injury is yet to be assessed, concerns loom over Gill’s availability for the crucial first Test, which begins on November 22 at the Optus Stadium. This development adds further uncertainty to India’s top-order lineup, already in flux with captain Rohit Sharma potentially unavailable for the game due to personal commitments.

A growing batting dilemma

Gill’s versatility has made him a key part of India’s plans, with the management considering him both as a No. 3 batter and an opening option alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, with Rohit Sharma absent owing to the birth of his second child, India might need Gill at the top of the order.

Rohit’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, gave birth to their second child on Friday, and the Indian captain had informed selectors of his likely unavailability for the Perth Test. There was speculation that Rohit might travel to Australia early to train with the team before returning for the child’s birth, but he ultimately chose to remain in India.

Compounding the issue, another opening option, KL Rahul, sustained an elbow injury on the first day of the training match and has not participated in subsequent sessions. Rahul was hit by a short ball and did not bat or take the field on Saturday, leaving his fitness in question.

India’s backup plans and the road ahead

With injuries piling up, Abhimanyu Easwaran remains India’s only fully fit opening option in the squad. However, Easwaran’s inexperience at the international level makes him a gamble for the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar opener.

Gill, who batted twice on the first day of the simulation match, showcased his potential by scoring an unbeaten 42 in his second innings after managing 28 in the first. His absence would leave a significant void in India’s batting order, particularly given their recent struggles.

India are already reeling from a 3-0 whitewash in their T20I series against New Zealand, and the batting lineup’s fragility was a glaring issue. Without their captain and with Gill’s fitness uncertain, India’s top order faces a stern test against Australia’s pace-heavy attack in Perth.

The waiting game

As the Indian camp anxiously awaits updates on Gill’s condition, fans and selectors alike will hope for good news. Gill’s injury scare has highlighted the fragility of India’s squad depth, especially in overseas conditions where resilience and experience are crucial.

With less than a week to go before the series opener, India’s management faces tough decisions. Will Gill recover in time? Can Rohit Sharma make a last-minute appearance to stabilize the lineup? And will KL Rahul regain fitness?

For now, all eyes are on the medical updates and last-minute adjustments that could determine India’s fate in the series opener of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Cricket is often celebrated not just for the game but for the moments of humanity and sportsmanship that emerge on the field. Virat Kohli, known for his fierce performances on the cricket field, has a softer, more generous side that he frequently shows off the field. Whether he’s engaging with fans, supporting his family, or maintaining respectful ties with fellow players, the former India skipper continues to demonstrate humility and respect. Recently, Kohli’s genuine nature shone through again when he was spotted outside his residence in a heartwarming exchange with an elderly fan.

A thoughtful gesture outside his residence

As Kohli was returning to his residence after stepping out of his car, he was approached by a fan—an elderly woman who was visibly excited to meet the star cricketer. After a brief, friendly chat, the fan expressed her wish to take a photo with him. Although Kohli appeared to be on a tight schedule, he didn’t hesitate to accommodate her request.

The woman, however, encountered some trouble with her phone as she attempted to take a selfie with Kohli. Recognizing her difficulty, Kohli waited patiently as she tried to navigate the phone. Ultimately, the fan handed her phone to someone nearby, who then captured a cherished photograph of the two together. Throughout the minor confusion, Kohli remained calm and friendly, offering the fan his trademark warm smile, much like his focused yet gentle demeanour on the field.

Preparing to take on Australia

Kohli’s touching gesture has left fans worldwide buzzing with admiration. But even as he engages with his fans off the field, his focus remains firmly on his upcoming responsibilities. Kohli will soon be travelling with Team India to Australia, where he’ll face one of his most formidable opponents in Test cricket. The former skipper will be looking to rediscover his form in the red-ball format, where he’s shown glimpses of brilliance but has not delivered consistently.

With the intensity and challenges of playing in Australia, he’ll be aiming for a strong comeback. Fans are hopeful that his skill and determination will help India achieve success Down Under.

This recent interaction with his elderly fan is a reminder that Kohli’s passion and grace extend well beyond the boundary lines. As he heads to Australia, fans are inspired by the compassion he brings both on and off the field, reinforcing his reputation as a true sportsman.

<![CDATA[Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Why Perth remains a tough start for India against Australia?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bordergavaskar-trophy-why-perth-remains-a-tough-start-for-india-against-australia/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bordergavaskar-trophy-why-perth-remains-a-tough-start-for-india-against-australia/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 11:21:02 GMT

As the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, Team India is set to kick off their campaign with a daunting opener in Perth, a venue historically known for its pace, bounce, and challenge for subcontinental teams. From memorable centuries by Sachin Tendulkar to a remarkable win in 2008, India’s encounters in Perth have been a mix of highs and lows. But as Rohit Sharma’s side aims for a 4-0 series victory to directly qualify for the World Test Championship final, starting in Perth could pose a unique challenge.

Early encounters at the WACA ground

The WACA Ground in Perth, often described as Australia’s fastest and most intimidating pitch, has long been a difficult arena for Indian teams raised on slower, lower surfaces. India’s journey at the WACA began in 1977 under captain Bishan Singh Bedi, who led the team to a competitive performance despite a narrow 2-wicket loss. A century by Sunil Gavaskar and a strong showing by Mohinder Amarnath showcased India's skill, even though Australia eventually chased down the target.

One of India’s most unforgettable performances in Perth came in 1992 when an 18-year-old Sachin Tendulkar scored a magnificent 114 against a formidable Australian attack. Despite the team’s overall struggle, Tendulkar’s knock remains one of the most iconic innings in his career, symbolizing India's fighting spirit and skill on foreign soil. Yet, Australia secured a commanding 300-run victory in that match.

India’s landmark victory in 2008

India made history at the WACA in 2008, breaking Australia’s 16-match winning streak with a stunning 72-run victory. The match saw exceptional performances from Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and an inspired young Ishant Sharma, who famously troubled Australian captain Ricky Ponting with a memorable spell. This win not only marked India’s first victory in Perth but also underscored their resilience amid controversies surrounding the previous Sydney Test, known as the “Monkeygate” incident.

The win in Perth was a testament to India’s growing confidence in overseas conditions and set a benchmark for future Indian teams touring Australia.

The move to optus stadium

Since 2018, the Perth Test has been held at the Optus Stadium, which replaced the WACA due to its modern facilities and higher seating capacity. However, the fast, bouncy nature of the pitch remains a challenge. India’s first Test at the new venue, in 2018, saw Virat Kohli’s team fall short by 146 runs despite a gritty century by Kohli himself. Although India ultimately won the series 2-1, the loss in Perth revealed that the city remains a challenging ground for Indian teams.

The Optus Stadium pitch demands precision and adaptability, qualities that will be crucial for India’s top-order batters. With a potent Australian pace attack, including stars like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, India’s batsmen will need to bring their best footwork and technique to counter the conditions.

Can India overcome the Perth barrier in 2024?

Rohit Sharma’s team heads into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener with high stakes: a 4-0 series victory would ensure their direct qualification to the World Test Championship final. Perth's unique conditions, with a surface favoring fast bowlers, present a significant obstacle. The WACA and Optus Stadium have witnessed some of India's most memorable and challenging moments, creating a mixed legacy for Indian cricket.

Australia’s dominance on this surface, coupled with India’s historically inconsistent performances in Perth, could be a psychological barrier. But recent years have seen Indian teams adapt better to such challenges, especially with a stronger pace attack that includes bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who could be well-suited for the Perth pitch.

The Perth Test will be an early litmus test for Rohit Sharma and his men, who aim to make history on Australian soil. Starting a high-stakes series at one of the toughest venues may not be ideal, but it could set the tone for India’s performance in the series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024 promises a thrilling contest between two formidable teams, with Perth’s fast and bouncy pitch adding to the excitement and challenge. As India take on Australia at this iconic venue, fans around the world will be watching to see if Team India can overcome the Perth hurdle once again.

<![CDATA[Sundar & Jadeja shine, but New Zealand take the edge over India]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/sundar-jadeja-shine-but-new-zealand-take-the-edge-over-india/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/sundar-jadeja-shine-but-new-zealand-take-the-edge-over-india/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 13:09:59 GMT

After a day of gripping cricket, New Zealand managed to edge ahead with a lead of 149 runs as India struggled to rein in Mitchell and Young’s strong batting performance. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja led India’s bowling with impactful spells, but New Zealand’s middle-order resilience put them in the driver’s seat.

Early success for Indian bowlers as Sundar and Jadeja shine

India struck early, with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja picking up key wickets to put New Zealand on the back foot. Sundar bowled beautifully, dismissing New Zealand's Tom Latham for 28, his delivery drifting in and breaking past the outside edge to uproot Latham’s off-stump. Ravindra Jadeja, meanwhile, kept things tight from the other end and managed to bag a five-wicket haul, delivering a masterclass of spin on the lively pitch.

Despite India’s early gains, New Zealand’s Mitchell and Young resisted with patience and precision. Young struck a composed 71 before Jadeja claimed his wicket with a well-placed delivery that found its way to Rohit Sharma at slip. Mitchell, however, was the standout performer, posting a gritty 82 with some well-timed boundaries and towering sixes, making India’s bowlers toil for every wicket.

New Zealand's middle-order resilience secure the lead

Daryl Mitchell's steadfast approach paid off, even as wickets fell around him. His powerful hitting displayed both control and aggression, including a massive six off Sundar that reached the top tier, thrilling fans and teammates alike. He and Will Young’s partnership added crucial runs, pushing New Zealand’s total to 235 before Sundar managed a final breakthrough, claiming Ajaz Patel’s wicket after he misjudged a drifting delivery that struck him plumb in front.

While Sundar and Jadeja dominated the wicket tally, India’s bowlers had little answer to New Zealand’s composed middle-order play. Jadeja’s fifth wicket of the innings, however, gave India a glimmer of hope as he bowled Matt Henry with a delivery that spun away sharply. New Zealand eventually closed the innings at 235, leaving India with a deficit of 149 runs to overcome as they prepare for Day 2.

The question of whether India will travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been stirring debate on social media and in cricketing circles. Set to kick off on February 19, 2025, with the final on March 9, the Champions Trophy will be hosted across three venues in Pakistan—Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. With tensions high due to strained political relations between India and Pakistan, fans and analysts alike are keenly watching for decisions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding their team’s participation.

PCB confident of hosting India; Rizwan hopes for a warm welcome

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently expressed optimism about India’s participation in the Champions Trophy, stating that the tournament would proceed as planned with all teams present. Naqvi emphasized Pakistan’s readiness and the country’s hope to see their historic rivals in Pakistani stadiums. Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s newly appointed limited-overs captain, echoed Naqvi’s sentiments, highlighting the warmth and camaraderie that cricket can foster between the two nations.

"Pakistan fans love Indian players; we received love in India during the 2023 World Cup,” Rizwan shared. “We also want India to come to Pakistan and play here. If they come, they’ll receive an awesome welcome.” Rizwan’s remarks, along with Naqvi’s confidence, underscore Pakistan’s desire to bridge gaps through cricket, even as political challenges remain.

Concerns over player safety linger: Harbhajan Singh shares his take

The possibility of India’s participation, however, face hurdles beyond just political factors. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh raised concerns about player safety in Pakistan, which has long been a contentious issue for Indian cricket. “Safety is paramount for our players. If there’s no guarantee of safety, our players shouldn’t travel to Pakistan,” he said in an interview with Times of India. Harbhajan’s views reflect a broader sentiment within Indian cricket circles that the security situation must be thoroughly evaluated before any travel decisions are made.

While the PCB is hopeful for a successful tournament featuring all teams, including India, the ultimate decision rests with the BCCI and the Indian government. Political tensions and security issues will continue to shape the debate leading up to the ICC Champions Trophy, with fans across both nations eagerly awaiting a potential showdown.

India's women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur makes her return to the lineup for the second ODI against New Zealand on October 27 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Harmanpreet, who missed the series opener due to a niggle, reclaims her role as captain, with Smriti Mandhana filling in during her absence. India leads the three-match ODI series 1-0 after a solid 59-run victory in the first game. With Harmanpreet back and promising new talent Priya Mishra making her ODI debut, India looks set to challenge New Zealand again.

Harmanpreet Kaur's comeback after injury

Following India’s early exit from the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Harmanpreet Kaur’s return is much anticipated. The captain had to sit out the first ODI, allowing Smriti Mandhana to step in as captain. Her comeback is expected to boost the Indian side as they aim to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. The match also brings excitement with the debut of wrist-spinner Priya Mishra, known for her recent standout performances.

Rising Star: Priya Mishra makes her debut

India has handed the debut cap to wrist-spinner Priya Mishra, whose remarkable five-wicket haul for India A in Australia recently caught the selectors' attention. In that match, Priya recorded figures of 5/14 in just five overs, leading her team to a 171-run victory while defending a target of 243. Her recent performance and promise as a wicket-taker make her a strong addition to the playing XI. To accommodate Harmanpreet and Priya, Dayalan Hemalatha and Renuka Singh were rested.

In an intense match, Priya Mishra showcased her skills with the ball, securing key moments for India. After a brilliant start, she claimed her first international wicket by dismissing Halliday, thanks to a stunning catch by Radha Yadav, who ran back, dived, and took it mid-air, surprising everyone. Mishra also caused a run-out earlier, getting Lauren Down out after deflecting a powerful drive with her fingertips. Despite a few missed fielding chances and boundary hits, including a fierce sweep from Green and a clean 50 from Bates, Mishra’s efforts kept the pressure on New Zealand, highlighting her growing impact in the team.

Changes in New Zealand’s lineup

The White Ferns has also reshuffled their lineup due to a major setback as Melie Kerr, their star performer in the Women’s T20 World Cup and Player of the Tournament, suffered a quadriceps tear. Kerr’s absence prompted the inclusion of Fran Jonas and Lea Tahuhu in place of Kerr and Molly Penfold. Kerr’s all-round prowess will be sorely missed as she finished the recent T20 World Cup with record-breaking 15 wickets.

India took control of the series in the first ODI, defeating New Zealand by 59 runs. Setting a target of 228, India kept the pressure on the White Ferns, with Kerr shining in a valiant effort, claiming four wickets for 42 runs and scoring an unbeaten 25 off 23 balls. However, her efforts weren't enough, as New Zealand fell short in their chase. India now seeks to extend their lead, with New Zealand hoping to bounce back as Sophie Devine chose to bat first in the second ODI.

New Zealand have set a challenging total of 259/9 in their 50 overs, putting India in for a tough chase on a pitch where slower deliveries have proven tricky. Bates and Plimmer gave New Zealand a strong start with an 87-run opening partnership, with Bates reaching her half-century. Deepti Sharma broke the stand, sparking a phase where India took three quick wickets for just 41 runs. Later, Sophie Devine ramped up the scoring with powerful boundaries, finding support from Green to help New Zealand finish with a solid score. India will need to bat smartly to chase down this target.

India Women (Playing XI): Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Yastika Bhatia(w), Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Jemimah Rodrigues, Tejal Hasabnis, Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Saima Thakor, Priya Mishra

New Zealand defeated India by 113 runs in the second Test of the ongoing three-match series at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune on Saturday, October 26. With this historic victory, the Kiwis claimed their first-ever Test series win in India, marking the first time they've won back-to-back Tests on Indian soil. The victory also ended India’s home Test series winning streak, which had remained unbroken since 2012.

New Zealand's impressive performance comes on the heels of their eight-wicket triumph in Bengaluru, giving them a 2-0 lead in the series. This accomplishment is particularly remarkable as it was achieved without the presence of their star batter, Kane Williamson.

Santner’s spin dominates as Jaiswal’s resistance falls short

All-rounder Mitchell Santner was the standout performer for New Zealand, taking an incredible 13 wickets across both innings. Santner wreaked havoc in India’s lineup, dismissing seven Indian batsmen for 53 runs in the first innings and six more in the second, delivering a match-winning performance on a spin-friendly track.

India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal top-scored in the second innings with an impressive 77 runs off 65 balls, showcasing resilience against New Zealand’s relentless bowling attack. However, Jaiswal’s efforts couldn’t prevent India from facing their second straight defeat in the series.

New Zealand's remarkable success in this Test series has halted India’s impressive unbeaten home run and signaled a turning point for the Kiwis, who came into this series after losing their previous four Test matches.

India maintain Top spot in WTC points table despite series loss

Despite the back-to-back defeats, India remains in the No. 1 spot on the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. However, to secure a place in the WTC final at Lord’s in June 2025, the Indian team will need to win four out of the six remaining matches in the current cycle.

The final Test of this series will take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from November 1 to 5. Following this, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team will head to Australia for a five-match Test series.
